Still one of the greatest games ever made. It is unrivaled even to this day in environmental and player-druven storytelling.

Happy to get to playthrough this one again, finished it for the first time back when Dread was coming out and I went through all the 2D Metroids. It was fun cutting down an hour to finish it compared to when I first played the game. Still an absolutely amazing game and easily one of the best games on the service.

A Super Metroid, the game that put the Metroid in Metroidvania. Great game that codified a gaming genre. It has been surpassed but entries that came later but Super is still good.

Metroid is Zelda on a 2D side scrolling scale. Funnily enough, the devs of Symphony of the Night claimed not to be inspired by Metroid, but Zelda.

I've tried a number of times to get into Super Metroid, but I always end up getting lost and losing interest, unfortunately. For the longest time, I even considered the game overrated, due to how many people rate it as one of the best, if not THE best SNES game, but nowadays I appreciate it for being incredibly sophisticated for its time, particularly in terms of environmental story-telling, and I REALLY love the soundtrack for this game, too. It feels surreal to look back on, too, knowing Nintendo themselves made this game. It feels like the kind of game Nintendo wouldn't make internally anymore... and they kind of don't, Metroid games are either made by Retro Studios or MercurySteam now (and occasionally Next Level Games). It really is a gem, even if I never managed to actually beat it.

Maybe I just haven’t played that many Metroidvania games, but do Metroidvania games really need RPG elements to count as a Metroidvania? Feels like a strange, almost arbitrary requirement, especially since the genre is named after Metroid. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night may have had RPG elements, but to me at least, that’s not a requirement for the genre as a whole.

No, that's the first time I ever heard that.
