Another World Diego is fine and all, but the frustration I had was the brevity of it all. The final race to Manhattan felt really brief and there wasn't too much exchanging blows or really much of outwitting. I felt that with the sewer segment, but that's about it. The rest is Diego attacking Johnny and nobody questioning why Johnny is on fire or full of knives. Yeah.. . Those hot air balloons kind of stopped being useful after the first checkpoint.
Ah Man, Silent Way. I still think about a better version of Steel Ball Run where Sandman survived and continued to be a fleshed out character with his own motivations for the rest of the Part. He could've even replaced Wekapipo for the D4C vs. Diego fight and that would've been a better end to his character.
I think, Diego shows us how much Araki grew and evolved this franchise. That even after the death of the main Villain, the part wasn't finished, he got Diego to fight Johnny. It is just mindblowing how amazing SBR as a part is
I don't like the "Diego set up Nicholas's death" theory. I like the dynamic of "Johnny and Diego are arch-rivals for petty reasons and ultimately are on the same side" as a contrast to the "ultimate rivals" thing that Jonathan and Dio had in Phantom Blood better.
the biggest issue with all of this is that the battle wasnt about Diego vs Johnny it was johnny vs DIO on a horse. Diego was a character that we watched develop throughout the series, from a racer, to an antagonist, to an ally(?). rather than being a monster like he was in parts 1 and 3, here he seemed more human. we saw that although he was self serving above all else. he wasn't necessarily evil. that there was good in him. When he acquired the left eye rather than just giving him the world, he instead inherited the stand of Dr. Ferdinand and made it his own, which in the end fit his character more than the world would have. but in the end he was killed in an attempt to kill valentine. and nobody really batted an eye at this, it was brought up like twice after it happened and nobody seemed to care. Dio form another world however is not Diego, much like original dio we only ever see him as evil, we know almost nothing about him and can only assume his past s the same. not to mention most of the development Diego got as a character no longer matters, because what happened in his world is probably very different form Diego. he isnt a character hes a plot device, which is why people have a problem with the ending. People wanted Diego and Johnny to race it out in the end. They wanted Tusk, the stand that grew with johnny to face off against Scary monsters, the stand Diego took and made his own. but instead they made original Dio skinny and put him on a horse. which is why the ending was such a cop out
skyler kelloe To be fair it can be assumed that AU Diego's history was similar because he constantly talks about how "Johnny is the same as ever" and "That nothing has changed about the race."
Yeah couldn't have said it better my self, I always didn't really like dio he was a bit weak villain (compared to all the others and it's made worse because he is put into the foreground of the stories as the main villain of all while Jonathan is forgotten ) and just kind of an asshole to me but I liked Diego a lot because he wasn't a villain, he didn't feel like he wanted to be the main villain, he didn't have any major world dominating ambitions, so when this happened it just became the hero fighting dio and Diego is forced to be the main villain & not his own person, why couldn't they just go in a different direction and have Diego live and become a allies or even friend to Johnny change things from the status quo we're used to because this is a new universe, he'll I do agree what met I said on a conclusion to the steel ball race but they could have made it into a more friendly competition (settling everything with one last race) they didn't have to go Diego trying to rule everything
Remember the world that valentine goes to with d4c is a very close world in events just the corpse doesn’t exist there. So the Diego he brought from there technically had the same memories, experiences, etc just no corpse. Honestly saying that he was a “cop out” and an “asspull” is invalid because like meti said it was a mix of stardust crusaders final fight and phantom blood, you have the long time rivalry of a jonathan and Dio but with stand action. Also it still keeps in tact with the time era(horse racing and lack of technology) this was a great way to reboot the jojo’s story
Diego was developed yes that is true but you allude to him being good, sorry but Diego murdered or attempted to murder someone in every chapter he was in.
@The Nova renaissance Japanese Kanji have several readings. From what I remember the Kanji for Josuke's "suke" can be also read as "jo". Witch makes Josuke literally Jojo. Some deliquents at the beginning of part 4 make jokes about it.
“Did Valentine bring an AU Diego or something? Doesn’t make sense.” mans casually forgets that he brings hot pants and diego from a different dimension
When I first saw Diego (just pictures and fan art of him) I thought he was a simp for DIO like someone who wants revenge because I didn't even read part 6 at that time but now, I'm sitting here, being the simpiest spider on the planet... When Diego first died I almost cried because the fight between him and Funny Valentine was just EPIC and I was still amazed... Then he came back with Za Warudo and I was like WHATTTTT MY HUSBANDO IS BACK... I love all the Dios but Diego especially so I praid for him to have a happy end, then he won the race and I was frickin *HAPPY* And then he died because of some 14 y/o girl And then someone was cutting onions, many onions But there must be more Diegos right if there are infinite Funny Valentines there are infinite Diegos so I guess everyone can have a Diego and that just makes me happy, everyone should have a Diego

Ever since his birth, Dio has been a person who has even stolen destiny! Dio is someone who's hungered!" Dio has stolen everything... Even his stand...
Well, a stand is not made from just someones physical body, but their mind. Even if he had a completely different body, I imagine he'd essentially have the same stand anyways.
@@zacheryestrada9667 I believe he's talking about Scary Monsters, since that was Dr. Ferdinand's stand, and therefore, technically never Diego's stand.
meti I need to apologize. I say you put too many anime girls in your videos. This time you put the perfect amount of gay diego stuff. Im sorry for doubting you
I feel bad for both Diego he wasn't even a villain he barely did anything and just wanted to get rich because of his childhood and he didn't even want the corpse when he could've had it :(
How the hell did Diego with the world ever even have trouble with Johnny when he could just use his stand to put Johnny at the bottom of some stairs and auto win
A silent way was bad because it reduced a potential ally or character with his own purpose to a villain of the week to give Jonny a new power up and someone to fight against. And it made Diego look like an underling villain of the week-esque character with no warning.
as cool of an idea dio being the final battle is the fight still lacks the personal impact valentine have, he killed an important person in Johnny's life right in front of him, Johnny doesn't even know that dio killed his brother, dio is just a random stand user in Johnny's eyes
@Waves problems here is Johnny doesn't care anymore about horse races or his daddy issues or some random racer trash talking, he just cares about walking again, if he cared about his father's approval then why didn't he just stop when his dad cheered him on ?
@Waves But it literally not the same Diego. That's like saying it's personal boxing match if you fight the identical twin brother of your rival. You can argue that it's literally like fighting your rival but the real connection isn't there because it's not the same person. The differences are alot bigger and make the battle a lot more impersonal than you think.
Honestly, Alternate Diego *did* feel really tacked on. The High Voltage Arc isn't bad, and AU Diego undeniably works in the sense that it follows all the rules of Valentine's ability, but it feels like a cop out. Araki basically killed off Diego, one of the most important characters in SBR, with literally zero consequence. Like you said, all of the buildup to Johnny and Diego's final showdown was thrown out the window when he was hit by that train. The story's rising action probably would have flowed so much better if The original Diego had been kept alive, and High Voltage could have worked basically the same with a few alterations. Hell, Araki could have even had the holy corpse give Scary Monsters an evolution that gave it a The World-like second ability, or even a new form (how cool would that have been, potentially seeing The World manifest with dinosaur-like attributes?)
I'm gonna be honest, I prefer Diego, I enjoyed how he eventually turned in president and went out like a anti hero in the cause against valentine, that was cool, the fact that funny asks Diego to do his bidding and grab the corpse larts for him was kinda dumb, I felt someone like parallel Diego wouldn't have the motivation for that since he's still in the parallel race and still has parallel Johnny to worry about, it was cool, but I thought it was kinda dumb, but the good kind of dumb when he comes back with the world, also love how they scared parallel Diego with base world Dio's head, very clever and cool, overall it was good but I don't think it was that important to have the alternate counterpart of Dio and Jonathan to have a legendary encounter since part 7 is doing it's own thing while still mirroring the first 3 original parts, but that's my opinion
I remember losing my shit when I saw the world pop up but I still thought it was weird how Johnny could figure out how Diego could stop time and for how long but I ignored it since this is the one bit of closure I needed for part 7
He didn't say a word about how his stand works, and to this day I STILL don't know how it works other than a deadly game of Battleship. That fight was more of a mental fight between the two than physical.
Diego showed us that you can achieve your goals as long as your ambition is strong enough. At this point of the story Johnny had already did everything he wanted to do, Diego still had that thirst for power tho and was not gonna go down that easy. I don't really see this fight as rival vs rival thing as much as I see it as Diego overcoming this wall that is Johnny. With prep and with a lil bit sacrifice Diego was actually able to beat TUSK ACT 4, a fucking op stand that should've annihilated Diego! But he still came out on top! It does kinda suck that he dies without fulfilling his goal due to his "past" coming back to hunt him, I know Araki is trying to tell us that your past can come back to hunt you, but the way it's done here is kinda meh since the og Diego had a different story from alt Diego. Araki should've kept the og one alive tbh.
i like how the thing that killed jonathan was dio’s return as a severed head during his honeymoon and the thing that killed ”the world” diego was OG diego’s return as a severed head after he finally won the race. neat similarities.
I like the fact that Diego cutting corners in his insatiable search for power is what prevented him from unlocking his true stand, The World, arguably the most overpowered stand in that universe. The World would've easily minced Valentine, Johnny and Gyro at that stage.
I think this might actually be one of your best videos. It's a really interesting insight into part of what makes AU Diego's reappearance with The World and Johnny's final (and, IIRC, only solo) battle with him so great. It's kind of like a grand celebration of JoJo's past, what with all the callbacks and Johnny fully coming into his own as the "JoJo" of the Part instead of merely the sidekick to SBR's originally-billed main character Gyro Zeppeli.
Tubular Bells was bad because usually the right hand man of the villains are usually hero killers that are very dangerous and are very significant to the plot. This guy on the other hand is just another villain of the week for the heroine character to prevail against with no lasting impact on the plot. He should’ve at least had a bigger presence and a much more deadly power since he’s that close to Funny.
au diego isn't the same as the real diego, thus the entire fight is meaningless. it's not really diego and his actions (ie killing his fans who got in the way) and things he says (ie threatening rape of lucy) make that clear.
Yeah, as a child who grew up watching his mother, the one he loved the most, be abused, i find it very hard to believe Diego would have such a blatant disrespect for women
DragonHeart 12 did you forget that OG Diego married an old woman and divorced her immediately after just to get her money? If that isn’t disrespectful to women than I don’t know what is. Literally OG and AU Diego are the same person with different stands, it’s just that OG Diego was never placed in a situation where he needed to sacrifice his fans (which was to defend himself from Tusk Act 4 btw) or threaten to rape Lucy who OG Diego never even properly met.
I like to imagine that the Silver Bullet we see with Alt Diego isn’t his original horse, and was taken from a universe where Silver Bullet has The World. This is why both Diego and Silver Bullet can move in stopped time.
I understand that Dio vs. Johnathan is very iconic, and Diego vs. Johnny would be the obvious follow-up, and it is a good, fun fight, with a lot of neat shit, including Lucy doing a cool thing... But let's be honest, it feels kind of tacked on. It's just how glued on to the end it seems. It takes the gravitas out of Diego's earlier death, and it feels like Funny Valentine literally pulled this plot point out of his ass. Why would he go to Diego for help? What logical reason? Diego is a slimy snake, and more importantly, a Brit. Why wouldn't he take it to someone who'd work to better America? Giving it to Diego kind of goes against his entire goal up to that point. That being said, it's a good fight. It's fun to experience.
that scene where diego's mom gets him soup with her hands!!! i was trying to remember where i saw it for a while :D i was reading dororo and that's what dororo's mom did EXACTLY! btw dororo is a manga from the 60's it has a new 2019 anime adaptation look forward to seeing that scene before sbr gets animated
I finished Steel Ball Run today, and though I really liked the Another World Dio arc, I feel like the setup to it was a bit rushed. We get one page of “who came out of the hole” and then Another World Dio is there with THE WORLD.
I think the appearance of AU Diego is the result of the lessons that Araki learned from Golden Wind. If Johnny achieved infinite rotation and defeated Funny Valentine with it and that was the end of it, it would feel very similar to the ending of Golden Wind, where GER's ability was used once to defeat Diavolo and the reader never really has a chance to understand what it can do. We assume that it's ability is simply deus ex machina because in that moment that is how it was used. Because we don't really understand it, it counterintuitively robs GER of the impact that it could have had if it's ability was something we could actually conceptualize. It feels like a trope and nothing more. It's anticlimactic. So, for SBR, instead of simply letting Johnny rest on the laurels of his newly acquired ultimate ability, he throws it up against the benchmark for strong stands in Jojo's: The World. Through his battle against AU Diego, we get a better understanding of Act 4's limitations (such as it's range and how it's effect can be returned to sender), while also showing off it's strong and creative uses (such as tunneling underground and moving in stopped time). Act 4 feels like a real stand, albeit a very powerful one, whereas it might have felt like nothing more than a plot device if it was used to destroy Funny Valentine and nothing else.
I was completely fine with AU Diego showing up after Valentine is killed. What I wasn't fine with was how neither Johnny nor Gyro seemed to care that one of the most crucial characters in the story just died. When I reread the part, it's obvious that Araki planned for Diego to come back, but he compromised what could've been a really great scene of Johnny and Diego together because it seemed like he was in a rush to finish off Valentine and bring in AU Diego as a parallel to DIO.
If you think about it, most STAND abilities were wielded like Hamon in SBR, obvious with the distinct lack of punching and more focus on the ability aspect.
Tubular Bells??!? The arc was already extremely intense thanks to the conflict between Scarlett and Lucy, and Tubular Bells was the foil to Lucy's disguise, since it could smell her scent. That arc and battle were fucking amazing

Would you say it felt like a race to the finish? To me the pacing gave the short scenes a sense of urgency.
Jojo fights haven’t been about exchanging blows since part 3.
Okay but why is Diego bad? Seriously, that dude at the beginning is ridiculous. Diego is still super cool.
Especially when he had the dino virus
He's talking about The World Diego, not Dino Diego.
@Waves It's bad because Araki basically threw Dino Diego in the trash and then replaced him with "lol it's Diego but more like DIO"

I WISH sandman was jojo in part 7 i really liked him but they just kill him out and we only left with the soundman alt theory to bite into

Everything about Alternate Diego is suppose to parallel DIO returning in part 3 with his stand, The World.

Like you had said words I wanna say to Meti... Thanks, man)
Yeah couldn't have said it better my self, I always didn't really like dio he was a bit weak villain (compared to all the others and it's made worse because he is put into the foreground of the stories as the main villain of all while Jonathan is forgotten ) and just kind of an asshole to me but I liked Diego a lot because he wasn't a villain, he didn't feel like he wanted to be the main villain, he didn't have any major world dominating ambitions, so when this happened it just became the hero fighting dio and Diego is forced to be the main villain & not his own person, why couldn't they just go in a different direction and have Diego live and become a allies or even friend to Johnny change things from the status quo we're used to because this is a new universe, he'll I do agree what met I said on a conclusion to the steel ball race but they could have made it into a more friendly competition (settling everything with one last race) they didn't have to go Diego trying to rule everything
Nicholas died because his name doesn’t start by Jo, making him a Joestar not being a “Jojo”.
So this is the reason Holly wasn't able to control her stand?
@The Nova renaissance If you are talking about gappy being the ga I have nothing to say

Diego wasnt as cruel to johnny as dio was to Jonathan
as cool of an idea dio being the final battle is the fight still lacks the personal impact valentine have, he killed an important person in Johnny's life right in front of him, Johnny doesn't even know that dio killed his brother, dio is just a random stand user in Johnny's eyes
Not only that it's not even the same Diego it's one from another dimension.
@Waves
problems here is Johnny doesn't care anymore about horse races or his daddy issues or some random racer trash talking, he just cares about walking again, if he cared about his father's approval then why didn't he just stop when his dad cheered him on ?

"How many dinosaurs can attack you in the stopped time?"

I loved that last battle. Johnny barely making it out alive was amazing!
i like how the thing that killed jonathan was dio’s return as a severed head during his honeymoon and the thing that killed ”the world” diego was OG diego’s return as a severed head after he finally won the race. neat similarities.

I literally thought araki was framing Nicholas' death as secretly being caused by Diego and thus fuels their rivalry tenfold

The only thing I learned from this video is that there is an ASTRONOMICAL amount of Johnny and Diego fanart.

@@dragonheart1236 yeah but this is a Diego who has the power of the world in his hands

"When they interact" Oh my.
To Funny Valentine, Diego Brando AU was the "Strongest" stand user that wasn't Johnny Joestar available to him.

I finished Steel Ball Run today, and though I really liked the Another World Dio arc, I feel like the setup to it was a bit rushed. We get one page of “who came out of the hole” and then Another World Dio is there with THE WORLD.
Ok but the first doujin he showed has really good art and feels almost like you're actually reading SBR, high quality shit
You thought it would be Dio! But it was me! Dino!
But it basically was it didn’t stop dio
I'm gonna be honest my name is Diego and I don't know how comfortable I feel with the art you used

I love him tho. I lost my shit when i saw the world again like im so happy to see diego again

You saved my fucking day sir, thank you,
If you think about it, most STAND abilities were wielded like Hamon in SBR, obvious with the distinct lack of punching and more focus on the ability aspect.
You say they’re rivals then show them in a seggs position
What I love about Diego is he could've easily been the main character of the story, he was a sympathetic villain and Johnny a ruthless anti-hero.
Funny Valentine: I got to get the corpse to ensure the prosperity of my country and my people at all costs.
Johnny Joestar: Like, I want my legs dude.

Tubular Bells??!?
The arc was already extremely intense thanks to the conflict between Scarlett and Lucy, and Tubular Bells was the foil to Lucy's disguise, since it could smell her scent. That arc and battle were fucking amazing
