Absolutely love this villain. He's probably the only villain other than Kefka that has been persistent in a Final Fantasy Series where even if you defeat him at the end of the game, his soul splits in two and takes over both Heaven and Hell. Which makes you go out of your way just to enter Hell and heaven in order to take out both his Light and Dark for a true end. What a true villain.
to take his Light Form out takes so much effort you basicly start at Zero again and work your way through the layers of his Castle until you are strong enough to face him
Yeah ikr kind losing on purpose in order to split his own soul in two. Defeating the devil (contrary to popular belief Lucifer/Satan/Etc doesn't rule hell he was the being to be sent there in order to punished) and probably God (cant have a villain w/o a hero) and almost convinced Scott, Ricard, Josef and Minwu to side with him. Makes me wonder when FF2 gets remade. Could we possibly get a new super boss being Frioniel/Firion, Guy, Maria, and Leon if the player falls for Mateus' ruse in heaven?
@@daehan8227 For the love of god do not ever say those words again. Square should never touch pre-VII ever again. Don't need it being trash like VII+. I've never played FFII, but this theme slaps hard. It has such an intensity to it that despite not knowing a thing about the game makes me terrified of Emperor Mateus.
Spoilers It's normal to be scared, he's responsible for so many deaths of your comrades and nearly conquers the globe. Then after you kill him his soul splits in twain because he is neither evil nor good and each half conquers heaven and hell respectively. The demons and angels spill out upon earth to do their new masters bidding and your party has to go to the afterlife in order to permanently erase his soul.
I've finally got around to playing multiple versions of FF2. Wow. I understand why people don't like it, but I don't think I'll ever agree with the reasons. I was very impressed!
I would like to know more about Emperor Matheus's past. His megalomaniacal behavior and belief that absolute power is the only thing that keeps the world running can demonstrate some trauma related to a lack of control over events in his life and perhaps envy towards some people in his life. Now, his possible need to govern the three planes of existence, may reveal something extremely personal. Like, wanting to decide who lives and who dies. Who does he think is more worthy of living and who does he think deserves more punishment and who deserves eternal rest when he dies, revealing a feeling of injustice, hence he possibly divided his own soul by instead of mastering both spectral aspects of reality as one soul, because he wants total effectiveness in this selection process, that things happen in the way that he considers to be the perfect one, and that the universe that constantly tormented him approves. Another thing that I realized about the Emperor, is the reason for his belief that the human being is imperfect and evil to be absolute. He believes that the human being has lost love, because people like Leon preferred to value their ambitions over their loved ones, and although it benefited the Empire, as we saw through the "Emperor of Light" part, he is completely impartial regarding his judgment of the human race due to his eyes being constantly closed, so, whether we belonged to the Empire or the rebellion, in the end, we would be just another despicable and corrupt human, the difference is that belonging to the Empire, you would not be exterminated because you were needed as a soldier. He also believes that the human being has a weak and wrong sense of justice, because as we saw throughout the game, the heroes make an alliance with pirates, who are known for looting, slaughtering and enslaving people, and a thief, however who knows if the rebels hadn't other thieves at their service, these less moralists than Paul, when the heroes should refuse to negotiate with people who, without an enemy to face like the Empire, would be hurting, bribing, killing, blackmailing and corrupting morally people who were honest and respectful of the law, and that the only reason for them to work with the heroes is because the Empire is a common enemy.
According to the novelization, if I'm recalling correctly, he was just born evil because of a demon's curse, which then bit said demon in the ass when Mateus conquered Hell and killed him.
@@LordSiravant the manga was never officiallised as canon, so I refuse to believe that origin story. And even if I considered it canon, the fact that he tried to get rid of that dark part of his and go to heaven in order not only to ensure his survival but to become a being superior to humans (since he perceives humans as the true demons while he's the angel), goes to show that he was never fully controled, and that his soul still belonged to him despite the demon's influence. He allowed the demon to influence him in order to get power, but all of his plans and actions throught out the game were completely his, because if there's a part of his soul that is untouched by the demon's power, that means the demon was never in full control.
@@Emperor_Mateus_of_Palamecia what can I say ? You are such a curious character and, with the proper analysis regarding the game (including a comparison with our world's history), its characters besides yourself and some of the game's events like the one involving those two masks, such a complex one that you deserved not only more screen time, but to have your point of view to be proven correct (I at least agree with your opinion regarding us humans due to the fact that the good guys work with a thieve and pirates and the fact Leon betrayed them without ever looking back).
After watching the latest "FF" today, I had to return to "FF 2" and "Tactics". And it is as I suspected. The thing is, "FF 2" and "FF: Tactics" were also based on "Game of Thrones" (or at least it was similar to the point the fandom makes constant comparisons between the show and the two "FFs"). This game doesn't feel right. It feels like a reboot/copy paste of sorts of both games. Olivier for example is an inferior copy of Emperor Matheus. Because the Emperor was actually a fascinating character to study. With Olivier, we only got a puppet to look at until Ultima shows up. Where's the fun in that ? And the political conflict ? "Tactics" handled it better. Dycedarg for example was a sick strayegist. Clive and Joshua's mother is simply a Karen like most people pointed out. Nothing special that makes her a fantasy level villain. I might as well have watched some soap opera if all she was gonna be was a toxic housewife/mother figure.
