Well, the spectators aren't the only ones who don't know the rule for interference. In a JV high school game I had tonight (and I was solo) I had interference on the batter who stepped out of the box and hindered the throw to third by the catcher. Easy call...I thought. The coach was incredulous that I would call that because he "stepped out of the box!" Sorry coach, that's interference and I have to get an out here. Told him what the rule was and what my ruling was. And then he appeals to the other team's coach (loudly so everyone could hear) asking if they coach the kids the same way, which is to have the kids step out of the box so they don't interfere! Very interesting moment as I watched and listened to what the other coach would say even though it wasn't going to matter. So the other coach then says "yeah we tell them to stay in the box".
Sometimes one just lets a coach hang himself. After getting blown out two games in a row I'm sure coach wasn't happy about how the night went. But at least his unhappiness could be directed at me and away from the 14/15 year olds who weren't adept at catching fly balls, nor pitching, nor hitting, nor scoring...
But in this clip this is definitely NOT interference.

I will speak to the first play of the video so I don't write an essay.
In regards to the clip where someone might be wondering if that's batters interference, the short answer is no. Or I wouldn't call that batters interference.
The long answer with rule book support is NFHS rule (7-3 Article (5)) is the same as OBR (I don't know what the rule number for OBR is) (correct me if I am wrong) but the batter stood still in the box when the catcher threw the ball. Unless he hindered the throw, there is no interference. However, let's say he moved in the way of the throw, intentional or not, the batter is out and all runners return to the base they occupied at the time of the pitch, UNLESS a 3rd strike is called in which the runner is out.
It would be the same as if there's a runner on first, the batter swings, and he goes over home plate (intentional or not), less than 2 strikes the batter is out, the runner is returned to first, or IF 2 strikes, the batter and runner are both out.

Looks like perfect calls in all 3 cases.

Like this ump looks like he knows what he is doing. In SUPER SLO MO it was a balk but at this level (and probably most non-professional levels) it is NEVER getting called.

0:30: Absolutely NOT batter interference. Simply existing in the batter's box while the catcher attempts a throw is not INT.
0:54: I probably don't balk this in a 10U game. Was there a slight hesitation move prior to disengaging? Yeah, but he's 10. R2 was running on first movement, and maybe shouldn't have taken a 15 foot lead (assuming 60 foot bases at 10U). That one's all on the runner.
2:03: For once, this one is so far fair that we CAN tell from the bleachers. Good get of OBS by F3.
    Very well officiated.

In regards to the no-balk call, I probably would call this out of habit (I work varsity high-school baseball so when I see a balk it's automatic), it also depends on what the tournament director wants. If the tournament director wants all balks to be called, slight or not then yeah I will call this a balk. I called a balk the other day, pitcher was in his ready or pre-set position (I don't know what it's called), and his hand that the ball was in had a slight movement (as if he were going to come set) in which I immediately balked since he didn't finish coming set.

i completely agree with everything you said here, beautifully executed, i dont know the exact rules of baseball because a play softball, but to me this sounds incredibly correct as in terms of softball rules

Looks like PU did get OBS by F3. Not the sharpest mechanic, but there's a finger point and then he keeps a fist extended toward 1B.

Edited..technically a balk. Probably worth calling since he has a the runner picked

The batters box is not a safe haven. While I don’t have interference on this call, the batter can absolutely be called for interference while never leaving the batter’s box.

    1. no batter interference
    2. balk
    3. out of the baseline
    4. fair
    5. obstruction, but he got to 2nd anyway so no penalty

Batter interference? No. He did not move into the play, alter the play or hinder the throw.
Balk? It’s close as to whether he buckled that left knee before stepping back but a 10 year old gets the benefit of the doubt.
    Definitely out of the baseline.
Definitely obstruction by the first baseman.

@@bluestar9463 Absolutely don’t need permission, but this is the second video of the same umpire who’s clearly working with bad help and the last video they put him on blast. It’s distasteful.

Wasn't a balk. He stepped off.

    • @teebob21
      @teebob21 Год назад

The step off wasn't the problem. It's the shoulder move/hesitation that precedes it that would get balked at higher levels.

In you SUPER slow mo it his front foot comes up first and then comes down THEN his back foot disengages...this is NEVER getting a balk call until maybe NCAAs but even then it is so slight I'm not sure in real time your pick it up. The MLB umps however know what they are looking for and this would get called most of the time.

It’s really tough to Balk that. I had to watch it a couple times to see it. Forgive me, but I may not get that in a HS varsity baseball game

Look like the right calls. He probably could have had batters interference and a balk if those are called at this division/age
