I'm a nurse practitioner at a spine surgery clinic. We do decompression surgeries and fusions every day, and I have definitely treated many non-compliant patients post op. Very frustrating to spend all that work (several months typically) to optimize the patient preoperatively just to have them resume their normal activities the next day and end up in the clinic asking for narcotics because they can barely get out of bed the following morning. I would listen to your doctor. It's not worth it! It's very easy to reherniate a disc after a discectomy.

We can refuse medical or surgical intervention based on noncompliance, in fact sometimes it is an ethical obligation to refuse. Further, non-compliance can be a powerful defense if the patient has a complication and decides to sue. At least he said he would tell his doctor. Now I'm 60 and in daily pain, if I could go back and see my 18 year old self I would strap him down to stop the damage he did to our back. He is a veterinarian and yet he plays tough, even though he knows (or at least should know) very well how important is rest after surgery for the body to heal up. I don't understand. And veterinary medicine is harder imo, than human medicine. You have to know so many species, anatomies, physiologies etc. Not saying that human medicine is easy, no way, that is really hard too.

As a nurse who works in spinal surgery, I see patients come back all the like you who didn't listen.
You can cause more spinal cord damage. Lifting more than 10lbs can cause more pinching and loss of sensation or motor movement. Sometimes it's permanent. Same as twisting. Patients come back and have to get metal plates in their back because they decided it wasn't necessary to listen. Much more of an invasive surgery and mobility is never 100%.
The bathing makes sure your spinal incision doesn't dehisce. It's not about "clean water" it's about glue dissolving before the skin has healed.
Not driving is to make sure you don't lose sensation in your legs or lose function and cause a crash.
But you are a grown man, I just hope you fully understand the risks you are making. Remember work smarter Not harder? Applies to surgery patients too. It's annoying but it will save you in the long run.

All day, everydays. 9/10 to 12/10 pain, 10 being the highest), been "living" (more surviving tbh) in pain for the last 5 years, can't have a job and my days and night are a nightmare, and even max doses of morphines can't do much shit. *All that because I didn't laid flat for two fucking hours.*

Karin, I do know what you're going through. I had four vertebrae in my neck fused in a reconstructive cervical spine procedure in the early 1990's. I was 48 at the time. Although it was a difficult surgery, I was able to return to work at a desk job, but doing the work I really enjoyed after a couple of months. Shortly after I returned to work, I signed up for academic classes at college, and while working full-time, and carrying 6 credit hours, I worked very hard and maintained a 4.0 GPA. I did the same thing for a few more semesters. Then, my husband, my son and I built a new house (we didn't do the building work), mostly the landscaping stuff. I have to say, the surgeon who did my reconstructive cervical spine procedure absolutely knew what he was doing. I have never had a problem with my neck, except when my aging aunt grabbed onto me and almost pulled me to the floor. I was sore and in pain for a week or so, but I've not had any further difficulty with my cervical spine.

Hey Matt and anyone else interested! There is no spinal "cord" at L5-S1. The cord ends at T12-L1 for most adults and below that are just nerve roots floating around as they exit at their respective levels. Disc herniations at that level are almost always eccentric to one side or the other, in your case it sounds like to your left, and compress the nerve root as they pass through the neuroforamina. In practice, your body will slowly resorb the herniated disc, but having symptoms such as numbness or weakness usually means it should be removed surgically before any lasting damage to the nerve root is done.

I finally received spinal cord surgery last year. Still need more ,but feeling much better. So don't be proud and foolish. Listen to the doctors following there advice. You don't want to undo what good the doctor fixed . Take care of yourself young man . If you cant take care of yourself. You can't take care of your family . ( Think about it ) And no marathons !

Ok Matt, when you’re laying there in bed trying to make bargains with God for just 20-30 seconds of relief, remember how confident you were that you could handle the unknown misery you were gambling with. When you’re on your hands and knees trying to get to the bathroom but have to climb over the edge of the tub because you can’t get on the toilet, open the fridge door but everything is too high on the shelf, when you can’t roll over in bed, are stuck, because the pain is beyond overcoming and you have to wait for someone to help you, when every heartbeat and breath is excruciating and sleep is only drug induced and you wished you hadn’t tried to get you life back to normal before you could fully heal. Remember that. Don’t F around with your spine. You only have one and it has to last you a lifetime.
