Each spring firefighters refresh their knowledge of wildland fire fighting techniques - getting ready for what could be an active fire season. Part of that training is fire line construction, which is very briefly explained in this video.

Please explain how wide a fireline should be and why

Every 1.5 ft tall flame x 2, because of embers and residual heat coming off of the flame that can start fires across your line

So if flames are 6 feet tall you should have a 12 foot wide line

No no no untrue. As a type 2ia firefighter we have a standard 18 inch wide line even in Heavy timber. The sawyers cut a 12 foot gap ahead of the hand line. This is the way its done. A dozer line may be woder though
