- John Mellencamp is fed up with Rowdy fans at his shows. So, much so he stormed off the stage during a recent performance. Also, in a brand-new interview with the Washington Post John Mellencamp slammed fans for their rowdy behavior at his shows. John Mellencamp is making sure that his fans are clear that when they come to see him live, they better be on their best behavior.

Maybe John Mellencamp needs to take a lesson from his fans. They shelled out a bunch of money to him to perform. In their minds, they did not pay him to lecture them on politics. Some of them don’t even care about his political views. But all of them came to get what they paid for. And he failed to deliver.

People who were not at the concert are critical of the crowd, (so was I). It's many of the folks in his audience who were disappointed in his narrative. Somehow, all these years listening to his songs, we thought he was a different person than he revealed himself to be at this concert. As for me, if I go to a concert, or watch a football game, or gather at a friend's house for a celebration, I'm there for camaraderie and entertainment, AND to get away from the political chatter that is shrinking my brain. Why would an entertainer want to alienate over half his paying fans to express thoughts we could hear on The View?!! Yes, "Just Sing". It's why we came.

To be honest, the more disgusting part of it is that John called that guy the name that he did. There could have been younger people there, like maybe grandparents or parents who brought their kids or grandkids to see him. Who knows. But he couldn’t even keep etiquette in his shows on his part, he went all off the handle. He got all unhinged. I agree with those of you who said that maybe it’s time for him to retire and live off the royalties.

It's very sad....he appears to hv some anger management issues himself, although totally not cool for people in audience to disrespect any artist/performer on stage. Rarely does a fan paying the high price of a concert/performance tkt desire to listen to the Artist ranting their political views. Sounds like it's time for JCM to consider retiring, or just go write great music.
When I saw him in Tulsa in 2019, on 2 or 3 occasions, he referred to the audience as "you mother F'ers." He was an absolute ass, and I will never waste another penny on him.

Managers, for decades, have been telling their artists to keep religion and politics out of their shows/careers because, no matter what side you’re on, you’re going to alienate half your audience. JCM has to decide if he wants to do music and bring joy to people, or to be a preacher for one side or another. I don’t think an artist can do both.

There are quite a few performers today where you can't just go to their shows and enjoy some music. You have to be on their side of the political fence. They make it clear in their dialogue that if you're not, they don't really want you there. I avoid these types of shows.
When I pay good $$$ for a show, I want a good show. If I want a rally, I’ll pay for that. Music and politics are separate and it would be nice if they know that! Rant over 😤🫤
Same thing with futbol players, basketball players, and so on.

I have experienced quite a few of these recording artists being complete jackholes.
I asked for a full refund for a Tanya Tucker rescheduled concert in Dec. and it was denied. She came out almost two hours late, drunk as 💩 and sung 6 songs, 5 of which were off her newest irrelevant album, and a Christmas song in 30mins and drank tequila with the front row for 20 minutes in between songs 3 & 4.
Before the final song she brought out her boyfriend for 10mins, then her dog for 15minutes, then finally asked for requests, I yelled out a song and she said not that one 🤣 so I booed, then others yelled for her to sing the same one I yelled for she said no again, they booed. She played delta Dawn and walked off stage. We were pissed. She kept saying "this is the last show of the tour " "I'm going home after this." Like bish you were supposed to be here in September.

I love hearing stories you get to know the artist better. Totally agree with him he’s older & wanting to share his life and what’s behind the songs. I’ve seen several do this BB King did towards the end of his career.
I don't want to get to know the performer better! I just enjoy the music that I paid money and traveled to hear.
Those former fans paid a likely exorbitant price to see him perform live. He reneged on that deal. Therefore each one of those fans should get their money fully refunded.

They did go to watch him play his songs. If he's only gonna do a show that is, let's say, two hours long then he is eating into, most likely well paid for tickets. We don't know how long he was up there rambling on from this video. So I'm gonna keep an open mind about this. I understand not putting up with disrespect. I also understand that I don't pay to go to the movies to see an actor try to sing, and I don't go to a concert hoping that I get a partial concert and a partial TED talks speech. he could've had the one guy removed, instead of wasting everybody else's money and taking it out on everybody else there. I attended the Seattle show 2023 and a man in the audience yelled, "Play the rocks and roll! " when John was playing a new song. John stopped the show and yelled back at the man. Security removed the man from the audience.

It works both ways. I agree artists should Keep their religion and politics, whatever they are , out of the show. It's bloody irritating. He's not the only one doing that .Likewise, if you're in the audience, don't demean yourself by being rude. Object by not going to another of their shows . Write a critique and post it. If enough people do that, artists will get the message.
He sang 9 songs and threatened to cut 10 more from the show? That is rich because I doubt anyone knew he had more than 2 or 3.
I don't know if we saw the full interaction in this clip but I think it's a real shame that he walked off and allowed that one jerk to spoil it for everyone else, who had paid good money to see him perform.
I do think an artist should have the right to request that security remove an individual for such behaviour and I think that would have been a better outcome for everyone.

I don't think an artist should have the right to "remove" a member of the audience. This behavior is undemocratic and it should not be tolerated by any fans of progressive music and arts in general. The artist has always the opportunity to simply ignore the hecklers and this is usually the way he will convince his true fans. But excercising authoritarian behavior is a no-go!

And even if it as, democracy cuts both ways and there's nothing democratic about one person in the audience deciding to disrupt a performance that others have paid for, without checking whether they agree.
If a person takes that unilateral decision - and if it's egregious enough - security should be able to take a unilateral decision to remove them.

The artist makes the decision, but if some of the audience don't like it they should have a right to say so without being threatened by SS security guards (the Stones had the Hell's Angels at one point in their career and somebody was killed if I remember correctly) or being put under group dynamic pressure which is not in tune with democratic behavior. The true artist makes his decision and stands above the hecklers in the audience. Dylan for example doesn't seem to care about any audience at all. Maybe it's because he doesn't have any hearing left anyway.
@@patryan244 When a musician makes an offer to the public to come hear them sing, and one pays a LOT of money to take them up on that offer, but are met instead by a man who is not keeping up his end of the bargain and is spewing his personal politics instead, one has the right to tell them to shut up and do what they are being paid to do. Now if Bozo Mellencamp advertised the event as "music and ramblings of a has been rocker", then no one would have the right to complain and would have to put up with said ramblings.
True story I met him in Kansas City Kansas his son was boxing at what was called Turner gym at the time my cousin used to help run it and I went to watch a friend fight, during intermission my friend said ‘look! It’s John cougar mellencamp!’ (In his Mexican accent) so I coached football at the time to kids I knew one of the truancy officers on the stage I asked if it was really JCM on stage sitting watching the fights he confirmed yes it was and he didn’t want to do any press they had radio shows calling in they had to say he wasn’t there cause he just wanted to watch his son, during intermission he was walkin around the gym floor so I went up to talk to him I still to this day have the video clip of me talking to him for a good minute, his son came out to his match to ‘Hurts So Good’ which I found very cool anyways he wa very humble he signed every autograph and took every pic he could that night

I love it when artists try and pretend like they aren't there to perform for the ppl that paid to go see them sing. These artists think that they are above recourse. When ppl pay to go to your show you should be thankful and do your best to give them what they want. Period. I've played music for audiences for 30 years, when ppl honor you with their presence and give you their time and money, you owe them the best show you can give them.

I don't see why any performer should put up with the rowdy disrespectful attendance they often get. I love music, if I pay my hard earned money to see a performance and you can bet your ass I'm there to listen to the artist not to get drunk and party. I can do that in my back yard a lot cheaper
