    My GenZ child told me about FD a couple yrs ago. I’m a social worker and get preachy about the culture, lol~and I feel honored that something I was saying in our discussion caused him to ask me if I’d ever heard of FD Signifier~one of the best gifts in awhile. In short, if he makes it I’ll watch it. Toure, I’ve been knowing since MTV generation ~we hear it a lot, and at the risk of sounding trite, I have to say Toure was landmark at the time~one place a black American teen wouldn’t see someone who looked like them was MTV at the time…then one day we did. Great interview and great discussion~I also love seeing in action how black folks are not monolithic, and we get to see/experience this in action with these two intelligent and interesting black American living icons🙏🏽😉

    Please, bring it! As a 62 year-old Black woman and educator, I was impressed by NLU on so many levels. I taught ententre for a week. Shocked that I used NLU in a lesson, my students would not let go! They identified this part of language in their daily speech. They went on to compare and contrast poetry of Biggie Smalls and Edgar Alan Poe. I've been enlightened by my students.

    The documentary ‘what the culture feelin’ is a staple in history now. We are all grateful for his peeling the layers back, because words do matter and the depth of this specific beef is so important. And that importance Can Not be overstated.
    For me, the most highlighting fact of the matter is what the disconnection really means for people as ‘culture viltures’.

    Regarding Kendrick's sometimes backwards politics, i think he himself has acknowledged (at least on the last record) his own flawed nature as this cultural leader and honeslty he's an artist/musician at the end of the day, I'm not expecting his politics to be perfect, his effectiveness comes from total honesty about his personal experience which will sometimes result in contradictions and flawed politics, my main critique of Kendrick would be the hypocrisy, a lot of which has already been discussed in regards to the beef

  • @dnifty1
    @dnifty1 4 месяца назад +1

    The responsibility of the figurheads is to promote and preserve the culture itself and the black people that created it, not everybody else. And this didn't need to be said in the 70s and 80s because most people knew it already because it was an underground culture and the mainstream looked down on it. But others just wanted a check, which was also well known and understood as selling out. And we see which side won out. Keep in mind this goes back to the era when the Nation of Islam, Afrocentrics and Public Enemy were dominant in the culture along with conscious rap (late 80s and early 90s) who all talked about these things. So the point is, those today trying to claim they didn't know or understand as an excuse for how things turned out are just lying. Tupac knew exactly what he was doing when he created THUG life and he explained and laid it out in numerous speeches, some of which are on youtube. Kendrick has never been that kind of guy who actually goes out and gives speeches about his philosophy about his role and impact on the culture. It doesn't even make sense to make these guys as significant in the culture outside of just being artists selling a product. They aren't anywhere near what hip hop was in the 80s and 90s as truly tied to the grassroots, beyond simple records but in the streets and everyday life. There was no spotify, there was no tiktok, there was no youtube, there was no cds, the only way you heard this stuff was in the community as part of the people that created it.
    Buju Banton just did an episode of Drink Champs. He spells out the mentality of the 70s, 80s and 90s clearly.
    Kendrick and Drake are performers who signed contracts to a record company and have to produce albums and their primary responsibility is to honor that. And if promoting a rap beef does it, then so be it.

Why? And 'Freedom' ? Might as well be called, 'Beyonce is the sh." that's what I hear. I don't care. People 'should' REALLY think about what Kendrick is saying. Like, 'make money an incidental, a tool. Archetypic. Personality. Knowledge of self: spirit, body, mental, emotional, if you will. Alexander on Diogenes. People want to be Alexander. Alexander thought Diogenes was the coldest mfer alive. Emperor had to be about his ish, but he knew, this is the guy. We would recoil from him probably.
