Debunking Common Guitar MYTHS

  • I found a list of common guitar myths online that I thought I would explore - to hopefully debunk them but also see if there is any truth to them which may be where they came from.
There's a lot of things that people believe about the guitar which just isn't true, and I often find that these myths actually feel more like excuses that people make - so that's what this video is about.
    Hope you enjoy it!

All good points. When I look at sheet music, I may as well be reading Klingon. But I do read tablature well and I found a tab book that includes both. So when it tells you to fret an E major, it also shows it in classical notation, so you get a on-to-one translation and all the sudden you get a feel and understanding what both are telling you. And, there's more than one place to play that E major chord. Hell, some are located in 5 different locations on the neck. The time/practice/getting good thing is just ridiculous. I have cheap guitars everywhere. At work, at my parents, at the lake house, in my car, at home...how many times I get to one of those places and I have an hour to do nothing? Lots of times. A Cube mini battery powered amp and a $200 Squire and I have something to occupy my time with. I have one of those Vox plug-on things you stick it in you guitar and then plug headphones in and you're jamming along to a backing track. How many times have you been in the back seat of a long road trip? Bam! 6 hours of practice. So yeah, that is just a stupid. If you've read this far, you've earned a like and sub! lol

I remember downloading Steve Vai’s 10 hour work out on dial up internet. About 40 pages of tabs ha. A good practice routine I’d suggest nowadays. 30 minutes. 10 mins left hand legato strength training. 10 mins right hand picking and syncing with the fretting hand. 10 mins practice scales and shapes. If you have another 30 minutes, learn something new, study up on theory.
You can play guitar for 20 years but if all you ever do is play a few chords and the same old tunes you’ll never improve. Gotta be pushing your mind and muscles each day. Then, once you’ve got to the level you wish to be at, then you can chill.
Ha, guitar gets you girls…. Hm. Maybe it works with you, I don’t think it’s ever helped me ha.

@@RobGalley Ah yeah definitely I’d say. I remember being 13/14 hearing an Ocean Colour Scene song and asking my friend if he thinks I’ll ever be able to play that solo. It was a simple pentatonic thing with bends and that. And then later in life, hearing Sweet Child of Mine and Metallica’s One solo’s, I thought if I could ever play them I’d be in dream land. And then, my only goal after this was to be like an orchestral violinist or a concert pianist. Somebody who’s trained their muscles so well, they can play at any speed. All I ever wanted to be do is be able to fly up and down the strings fluently. In recent years my two note per string stuff has improved too so it allows for more variety. I’m always getting better still. Never stopped pushing even after 25 years. I’m not great at tapping, I like my hands on the guitar at all times I’ll be honest. And there’s a piece of music called Serrana by Jason Becker which I think is one of most amazing pieces of guitar playing I’ve ever seen. I’ll never be able to play. And I kinda don’t want to be able to. I still want something to be out of reach ya know? Lol! But there’s a whole other side to it. Your improv is unreal, so melodic, so stunning. I’ll never be a match for someone like you in that department. The musical department ha.

Hey Rob! I’ve been watching your channel for years, love the content! :)
Would love to see more of your skills showcased! Also, would you ever do any more covers again? (Could we discreetly ask for a famous movie soundtrack compilation? 😇)

That’s a great idea about the compilation! I do less covers these days purely because copyright just got a lot more difficult to deal with & it’s gutting to sieve ages on a cover then the video just be blocked or hit with a copyright claim..

Wise words my friend. I have 3 HBs and they are becoming my first to go to instruments. 4 if you include their excellent semi-electric travel guitar for just £68!!

I can think of a reason to start on an acoustic, not that I entirely agree, but I see the point: Let him earn it!
Your kid badly want to play guitar, let him prove you that he really want it with that probation period on an acoustic.
That said, if that's the route you chose for you or your kid, I strongly suggest not to make life *that* miserable : without breaking the bank, go for an acoustic that have a decent action, fretboard, radius, as well as decent overall quality. You know, an acoustic that is good enough to be a keeper once an electric is bought.

Not so much a myth but a bit of an oddity, I'm left handed....I tried to learn to play a left handed guitar way back when I was a teen..it wasn't working for me as you know teachers are typically right handed etc. When I was in my mid 20s I bought a right handed Squire Bullet (cheap Strat) and actually found it more enjoyable to play right handed...learning was easier for me with online videos and whatnot as I was able to mimic things easier. Fast forward to 2019 when I treated myself to the real deal...a Fender Strat Players Series...HSS, Mexican made and oh my word...so nice to play, still a righty too.

Never forget you saying to me, "the acoustic guitar is a great instrument to bring to our lessons, however for the music you're attempting to play on your acoustic, it would be like taking a pair of flip flops to play a football match!!!!"
I'm a 44 year old contractor ,so wasn't offended, I just made sure I turned up with a Fender Stratocaster from then on.
I am now having a go at Eric Clapton's Layla and Jimmy Hendrix's Voodoo Child slight return 3 and a half years in (this is going to take a very, very long time to nail, but i'm an ambitious dreamer!).
Thanks for the advice Rob, see you soon. Top post pal.💯💥🤘
