These Lionel locomotives are actually made by the folks who made some of the finest brass locomotives back in the heydays of brass. They still do the occasional hybrid projects for some well known importers. All around, Lionel and their supply partners have done a stellar job over the last few decades to produce the great lineup we have today.
I liked the whistle of the 24-wheeler. It is more like I expect a steam whistle to sound. The other one sounds more like a ship. The fantasy passenger set, combined with the new locomotive, was absolutely stunning!
Yep, I was torn between the Valley Flyer and the Black Bonnet too, but in the end I decided on the Valley Flyer and it is gorgeous, both are gorgeous! Thanks and enjoy!
The shot of all the locos running is probably the coolest shot I have ever seen from anyones layout honestly. Only question is how did your circuit breaker survive that?
Good question! The tracks you see in this scene are fed by three separate power sources so I was able to spread out the power consumption. I also have 20amp breakers in the train room. Thanks for watching Scoobs!
Fantastic as always Chris! What an absolute beauty and congratulations on adding such a unique engine to your collection! The cinematography just keeps getting better and better making for one impressive video! Thank you for sharing this with us my friend and keep it up!!
Thanks Kolt! Been enjoying seeing your buildings that you have been adding to your collection. Reminds me of just a few years ago when I was arranging buildings and prototyping the layout on my floor as well. Miss those days!

I want to confess something. All these engines and their electronic sounds, they give an eargasm. It's so good I can't describe it any better than that. I can only wish to hear those roaring engine sounds IRL.
The swinging bell is the best one I've ever seen on a Lionel engine. The default whistle is definitely best. The second one is actually from the Southern Pacific AC-12 Cab Forward.
Welcome Back ! I sat back and totally enjoyed your video. You are very informative and very well spoken. It's always a pleasure and look forward to your next show. Thank You.
That shot of all the big steamers rolling out without question has to be one of the coolest model railroad shots I've ever seen the house hold must have loved the noise haha! Well done
Thanks Chris, that video brightened up an otherwise dreary day here in the Richmond VA area! Snow, sleet, yuck! That Lionel 2-10-10-2 certainly works better than the original ever did! The originals soured the Santa Fe on articulateds, so much so that to my knowledge they never operated any others again. Turns out the didn't need to anyway. The Virginian on the other hand had ten very successful 2-10-10-2's built in 1918 by Alco that lasted until the 1940's. Best whistle? I like the Santa Fe's one, it's a bit more melodic than the Big Boys. And I loved that Santa Fe "Railfest" you put on! Even the "Blue Goose" showed up! Cool!
Hey Wayne! Brightened my day too. Lots of ice going on out here so glad the power is still on so I can run trains. Thanks for the background! Always appreciate your knowledge! Glad you noticed the Blue Goose I snuck in there. Take care!
I remember that “steam” having such a distinct smell from when I was a kid. I saw this thing puffing down the track and my brain flashed immediately into remembering that sensation.
Awesome video Chris! I love the 2-10-10-2’s. I hope to get one for my birthday that is coming up. That thing is sick! I’m sad that they scrapped all of them in real life. Keep up the awesome work!
That is a cool engine Chris! That paint scheme, though not prototypical, is pretty darn nice. Thanks for running it and showing off all the features it has.
Wow Chris, this was such an awesome video! I do think that the 2 10 10 2’s whistle was a bit better though. I am surprised that your train yard was able to handle the massive weight that those Mega trains must have had. Your right though, to be able to have seen such a gathering of giant per portions. Thank you for bringing them all together for us on your layout. It was nice to see the Big boy again. Your black Santa Fe cars looked so cool! Keep them coming Bud I really love your shows.
Cmon man! Big Boy all the way, what a dream collection you have. I have a Big Boy, Y6B and a Texas 2-10-4, sold my Allegheny for the big turbine! Your videos are the best thanks and keep up the great reviews
I'm in love with both whistles but I'm partial to Big Boy as you can tell from my profile picture. 😆 Thanks to videos like yours, I've started model Railroading. Currently doing a 5x10 ho scale layout in the garage.

Believe me I am trying! Maybe one of these days let will let me do commercials, haha! I agree that this is a lifelong hobby. My dad got me hooked and I am in it for the long haul. Thanks for watching Jimmy!
Dude I LOVE how steam comes out of the whistle every time you press the whistle button, such a small yet brilliant detail that really brings the model to life
So sorry I missed you guys at Stockyard Express.....40 min from my house I would have driven there just to meet you. Have been at Stockyard Express many times!!! You guys had a great time!!
Great to see all these giants together! A fantastic collection of the most powerful steamers ever built! Too bad that in reality, the 2-10-10-2 didn't quite make the grade. But the appearance is powerful! Thanks for sharing.
Great video Chris! That’s a tough one. That whistle on the 2-10-10-2 is pretty awesome, but I’m still partial to the king of the rails …… Big Boy! One thing I think would be cool, would be to put the 2-10-10-2 in Big Boys whistle mode, and if you have a secondary remote, simultaneously blow both of the two whistles together at the same time and really make some serious noise!!!! 😃
So close, I thought the 2-10-10-2 would have the edge in terms of length, I thought the Santa Fe’s 10 driving wheels vs the Big Boys 8 driving wheels would edge the big boy out. Also, I hate to say it, but I think the New 2-10-10-2 has a better whistle.
When I unpacked the engine I was sure it might be longer but Big Boy reigns as the biggest engine. I really like the 2-10-10-2 whistle as well. An incredible sound! Thanks for watching Nick!
Hi Chris, Both are beautiful engines, both sound great but I’m still partial to the Big Boy, it sounds amazing 👍🏻 I’m liking the paint on the 2-10-10-2 but to me, the wheels just seem undersized, the features are amazing on it and I wish they would’ve put those on the Big Boy or at least so they work as well as your newest acquisition. Thanks again for a great video. Ron
The shot of all the locos running is possibly one of the best if not THE best thing i have ever seen in my life. It would be a railfan’s dream to see all of these locos all in the same place. It would have been amazing to hear these behemoths all running at the same time. Though, due to my autism, i would absolutely hate the noise, because autistic people get very overstimulated in loud environments. If you overwhelm even ONE of their senses, they’ll start looking very uncomfortable with the situation presented to them.
Congratulations Chris, I picked mine up yesterday as well. Additionally, after poo-pooing the Base Cab-3, upon reading more and understanding more are warming up to the idea. Gonna pre-order one.
I hear you Ken. I think the app control offers flexibility for updates and features that a remote with finite buttons may lack. Still going to hang on to my Cab2 as long as I can but time to dedicate an iPad to the train room, haha! Take care!
The black bonnet paint scheme is so eye catching in my opinion. But your train was still missing something. The new lionel legacy 2-10-4 black bonnet. Seeing the black bonnets triple headed with the passenger cars now that would be a sight.
I've got an MTH RailKing Y6b, what a beast. It'll pull tree stumps! I had to get a Y6b, I wasn't going to disgrace my Class J by having it pull freight.
The model was first released in 2009 at the same time as the Pensy CC2. Those two were the first two locomotives with the whistle steam, swinging bell, and blow down smoke effect. When it first hit the market, the original model had the same whistle as you are using in the video. I know it because I watch it on RUclips.
I think the Big Boy Whistle still wins, but the 2-10-10-2 is a beautiful engine. And the think you made a great choice in the Black Bonnet paint scheme. It looks like it was built for the Black Hills Midnight Chief passenger cars.
I personally love the 2-10-10-2’s whistle over 4014’s, it just sounds right. And if at all possible, could someone tell me what type of whistle the 2-10-10-2 had as the default option?
I recently found out that a boiler on steam trains is only really securely fixed at the back by the firebox. I always thought it was unique to articulated steam trains, but it turns out that MOST steam trains are securely fixed only at the back of the steam train. some may have "supports" along them, but most of the weight is beared further back. they are designed that way so that as the boiler grows and shrinks from heating and cooling, it has a place to go. according to my source, it also helps with traction in some way as it puts more weight on the drivers. idk if that last one is particularly true, but I know the first is the main one
These Lionel locomotives are actually made by the folks who made some of the finest brass locomotives back in the heydays of brass. They still do the occasional hybrid projects for some well known importers. It would be quite realistic if it was 2 rail.
