Thanks for this. A lot of people don't know all the hard work that goes into tanning. But once you learn it's not really hard work anymore Its just a passion and love of a skill. I learned how to tan when I was young. My toughest obstacle was the predators dragging them off at night because of my parents tough rules. But I did finally manage 1 coon hide and 1 squirrel. It's a pleasure to watch you show things I've almost forgotten.
I'm ready to try tanning my first racoon and have been studying your video to make sure I get the process right. Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge to us novices! I do have one question -- what did you use for the degreaser that you added to the pickling liquid?
I supposed you could also boil the water after the salt soak to recover your salt. That way it can be used multiple times for multiple skins. Just thinking in a homesteading sort of situation.
OK, so I have the opportunity to …..yes I’ve researched my local law ground squirrels perfectly fair game for everybody no restrictions … practice on squirrel is that a good idea?
As a person who enjoys making things from snakes and other reptiles ive always been kinda iffy about trying mammal hides but after seeing this its given me a bit of confidence in trying it cause mostly i just need decent leather that isn't the paper thin imitation leather
Great video my hound finally treed his first coon after 2 years of recovery from falling out a tree because we couldn't get his actual first coon so we're gonna tan this one for him just didn't know how to so I had to look it up very educational because I only know how to tan deer and small game like squirrels very proud of my boy tho great video 👍🏼
Thank you. I’m studying this for after she passes because my service animal is very old and and her hide is very unique and I want to save it for the rest of my life. I swear my dog has tiger print. Love the Brindles.
Hey Mike. Im getting ready to do my first hide, its a coon hide as well. How long did you leave it in to pickle when you put the hide in for the second time?
Great video. Followed it to a "T" and my coon came out pretty good for a first try but the tail is still really greasy. The rest of the hide is dried and stretched except for a little bit of the head and back of the neck. Do I just need to be patient or should I resalt the tail? Thanks a lot!
After I tanned my racoon with egg yolk I keep it in the shed but its always wet or greasy never dries, with the weather here being humid and snowy not sure how to dry em completly , seems like Im forgetting a step or thats just how hides feel
Hey Mike! Tom Weeks.. Bill Weeks' son here.. We're tanning a deer hide, and are wet treating it in borax right now to release the hair. My wife's had it in a non-food cooler where it's been soaking for a week now. Will the borax "melt" the skin? How long is too long?

So do you use pickling salt for drying the hide and when you soak it in 2 gallons of water?
yes
will this process work for a fox also?
It seems to have a rhythm of its own, processing the skin. How do you test the ph to make sure it’s under 2.5? Thanks for another teaching, Mike!
thanks a lot try it sis
