- Bern, the capital of Switzerland, lies at the foot of the Alps. The city itself is quite hilly, and to get people to observation areas or, you know, parliament, Bern has two funicular railways dating back to the late 19th century. There is the short, 105m-long Marzilibahn in the city center, and the 1058m-long Gurtenbahn located on the outskirts. We rode both, and here's a brief overview of the two:

Switzerland 🇨🇭 has been on my bucket list for a while now! Even more so since their railway system is in my opinion one of the best out there
Switzerland is a giant train set
Another interesting & very comprehensive upload Thom, you really do a lot of research on your subject matter.- this time on Bern's funiculars. My late mother lived & worked in Bern in her youth. She loved the city & the scenery, it is on my ever-increasing 'bucket list' - I have been to Switzerland on the Bernina Express from Tirano (near Milan) to St Moritz - that was a spectacular train experience done in September with the snow still melting on the Alps back in pre-COVID 2019 (would love to do it again this time in Winter). Switzerland does have a very efficient & extensive network of trains, with spectacular background scenery all year round. It is a fascinating country with 4 official languages. I too like to collect railway memorabilia - my favorite is an 1880 train guards kerosene lantern it has a switch to change the light signal from red, green or white). Take care & stay safe in your travels.
I bet the Bernina Express was amazing! I’ve always wanted to do one of those. I have been on the route of the Glacier Express, but on a regular regional train.
I didn’t know your family had a connection with Switzerland. I hope you get a chance to go back and explore some of your roots soon.
I’m celebrating my time in Michigan with some videos next week, as I’ll be moving to a different city very soon…
@@Thom-TRA Hopefully your new location is not so snow bound & cold!
An interesting thing about the normal station clock in Switzerland is it only moves the Hour and minute hands on the full minute so it jumps always a minute at a time
Awesome video
Thanks!
Thank you for the video Thom! When I was in Bern, I was only fortunate to use the trams. I wish I'd known about the funiculars. They look great to ride 🙂
I like the trams in Bern! What was your experience on them like?
@@Thom-TRA I enjoyed using them. I always remember how impressive the Old Town of Bern was! 🙂
4:15 Same principle is still used today, on the Nerobergbahn in Wiesbaden Germany
Wow, I didn’t know that! I will have to go there someday. Can you hear the water?
You have to come to Pittsburgh and ride our furniculars (we call them inclines)!
I want to go to western PA sometime, see Pittsburgh, Johnstown, the Horseshoe Curve, all that cool stuff.
@@Thom-TRA I'll be going through the horseshoe curve on Sunday for the first time, looking forward to it. Don't forget we have a light rail/subway here in Pittsburgh too!
Did you hear that Detroit people mover is going to get an upgrade in the next 5 years.
I did not hear that yet!
@@Thom-TRA it will cost about 100 million dollars for the upgrade.
@@Thom-TRA why do you think the upgrade will include.
Breaking news Siemens venture cars are on wolverine.
I saw that on Facebook! Hopefully the Pere Marquette is next!
@@Thom-TRA hopefully the train I am goin on in June has it. I am going on 353.
@@Thom-TRA do you think it will be on Amtrak wolverine 353 when I ride it in June.
