As a Pro -drummer there’s a reason why the SPD-SX is the go to sampling pad over any other pad simply put it’s bullet proof and it works. Will be getting the Pro asap. Well done Roland with listening to us. 💯🔥

Have Roland fixed the dreaded power issue many have experienced with the original SPD-SX? I'm a bit worried to see that it looks like there's still a flappy rubber power button....
I have been using the original SPD-SX professionally since it's initial release some years ago. I love it, and cannot do without it. Our band has somewhat built our set around it, as the powerful tool that it is. However it must be said, my relationship with it, and sadly Roland as a brand, has been very much a love/hate one.
My units have been back to Roland several times over the years, with the persistent issue of it intermittently refusing to turn on, with no apparent reason for it. So you will forgive me I'm sure if I take the comments in this video; "reliability" and "built for the rigours of touring" with some skepticism.
I think one of my units has actually been back to Roland 4 times now. The first time, they told me they replaced the main board, but when the issue soon returned, their techs gave me no explanation for it whatsoever. To me, it suggests they are likely aware of an issue but unwilling to admit to anything, due to the liability that would obviously come with that.
Sadly, the best advice Roland customer support could give me was to purchase a second back up unit to carry around with me. Disappointing to say the least, for a product costing hundreds and marketed to professionals. Is it too much to ask to expect the unit to reliably turn on?
Each time I sent it back, and after a short period during which the problem seems to go away, it soon returns, a few weeks later.
For the record, my units are very well cared for, kept warm and dry at all times, and transported in flight cases.
In the end, I gave up sending it back to Roland or expecting any further support from them at all. Especially so, as they were expecting me to pay for any further support. Indeed on my final attempt to get to the bottom of it, I did pay money to send it back and have it looked at. But no explanation, and the issue persisted.
My only option at this point was indeed to carry two of them on the road, which is what I now do. VERY frustrating.
To top it all off, BOTH units now have this problem. So far, thankfully, I've not had them both refuse to turn on at the same time. Not yet anyway. I sincerely hope that never happens. For now at least, it seems like they just conspire between them to take turns!
After giving up on Roland, I sent my units off to an independent tech that I know personally. Outcome - No explanation, just lots of head scratching.
I even decided to take one of them apart, to see if I could pinpoint the problem myself. I didn't find anything. However, the mere act of unscrewing the unit and pulling the casing apart bizarrely seems to make the problem go away for a little while.
It's truly a mystery to me, but that awful flappy rubber power button seems to have something to do with it. That's my best guess, anyway. So I'm a bit concerned to see a similar looking power button on the new model. Could you not have built in a proper hard switch?
I also know that I am not alone in this. Three or four other professional drummers that I know personally have experienced this issue themselves at some point. Getting to a show, experiencing the horror of it refusing to turn on. You then go through the standard process of elimination (different cables, outlets, power packs etc to rule everything else out), but we know it's a waste of time, because the ONLY explanation is a power issue inside the unit itself.
Without any explanation from Roland proving otherwise, I can only conclude this isn't an issue with just a few SPD-SX units, or something we are doing wrong. We've been in this game a long time, and we are not stupid.
The ONLY explanation is an inherent flaw in the design of the SPD-SX itself.
Being totally frank, it's just not good enough for a professional level product, used by some of the world's biggest acts, on some of the world's biggest stages. Performers need reliability first and foremost, over and above everything else, and this is something I've been battling with for years now.
I hope Roland can understand that my first hand experience using the previous model, and my experience getting support from you (or lack thereof) leads me to be extremely cautious purchasing Roland products. Sadly I don't really trust them to actually admit to problems and do right by their customers, and that's a real shame, because the products themselves are amazing tools and in terms of functionality, pretty much the industry standard.
All of this being said, I will be considering this new PRO model. I have to, because the model I currently use cannot be relied upon, and there are few decent alternatives. I can only hope Roland have quietly fixed the problem behind the scenes, and this isn't an issue with the new unit.
But as I have now spent an absolute fortune trying to get the previous model to work for me RELIABLY, and having had far too many panic moments over the years getting to a show only for the unit to outright refuse to turn on, I will definitely be looking for clarification on this first.
Should some kind of confirmation not be possible, then I'll have no option but to patiently wait for the time being to see if other users experience these kinds of problems in the coming weeks.
So, Roland, if you are reading this, could you confirm that the power system inside the unit has been updated in some way, improved or changed?
If so, that would be enough for me. I'd let bygones be bygones, and put one in my basket right away......

Hi Tommy Rowe. I’m obviously not from Roland!! but reading through this comment, I’m sorry you’ve had these issues. I’ve not had these experiences to be able to offer any insight into them I’m afraid. However, having looked at other official media on Roland’s website, on this new model there is a physical on/off switch, like on TD-27, on the rear panel rather than the rubber pad button. I hope this can help with your decision making (and others who may have had the same issues)

Yes, this same thing happened to me several years ago & I ended up having to buy another unit. It is the power switch on the SPD; on unit #2 I got it hasn't been a problem yet, but unit #1 will work great for a couple weeks then refuse to turn on. This is not acceptable if you're playing a theater show! I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue & see others have also tried fixes that didn't work.
Roland, just put in a regular switch!

As an owner of the SPD SX Pro, I can say it has alot of useful features especially for backing tracks. I purchased it thinking it had a real sequencer, not some bogus pad triggering other pads thing. But its almost 2024 and still machine gunning. There needs to be round robin samples or some type dynamic effect to negate the machine gunning of samples. I hope Roland listens.

I hope Roland has a similar update to the HandSonic HPD-20 in the works. The HPD-20 is outdated/long in the tooth, and really deserves an update. I’m holding off on purchasing one until there is an HPD-30/HandSonic Pro. Color screen, sampling, and similar interface improvements to match the level of the SPD-SX Pro.

I've owned several of the SPD SX over the years that were purchased for specific projects and wouldn't own one if not needed...it's a glorified SPD S. However, being a Roland guy for over a decade, I bought one of these after watching this video strictly for the data list, which is 1550 sounds, to use in my studio. If this disappoints as the SPD SX did, up for sale it goes. However, it does look promising...

Is this iteration of the SPD-SX able to properly sync to an external MIDI clock? By that, I mean not only set its tempo using an external MIDI clock, but also respond to MIDI Start to set its metronome beats, i.e. to beat-sync. We decided against the previous SPD-SX model because it is not able to actually sync its metronome clicks to an external MIDI clock/MIDI Start messages, which other synced gear we use (arpeggiators, sequencers) are perfectly able to. Not being able to locking in the metronome of the SPD-SX to the actual beat makes it impossible to use live with more gear which are synced to the beat. And since no MIDI implementation chart is anywhere to be found, neither can I figure out myself if I can start the metronome via, say, a CC message, which could be a workaround for it not responding to MIDI Start.
This video demonstrates this issue: ruclips.net/video/MGCsFKX6y0c/видео.html To have the metronome to be in sync to the beat, it is critical to press the metronome start button precisely on time.
Has this limitation been fixed in this new model? Is it now possible to properly sync the SPD-SX to MIDI System Real-time Messages?
This would also be relevant for triggering longer samples which should be in time with other synced gear, to have the sample playback "quantized" to start *on* the beat. Either delayed if one hits the pad slightly too early, or it can actually cut a small bit of the start of the sample if one triggers it slightly after the beat.

I love all the improvements they have made in this new version of spd sx, definitely a PRO version. I am looking forward to having her with me.
Being able to customize the click sound makes it a reality for me to be able to use it as a visual controller without the need to import the pro tools click sound which I like. More outputs so I don't have to send the playback from an interface to have the stems I need for my band, LEDs on each pad, so I don't have to cover it with phosphorescent tape for dark shows, more effects and stereo pads, custom pad eq on 4 bands, so many new features. Thanks Roland, it was worth the wait ❤️‍🔥

If you changed the tempo on a kit that you’ve programmed as a starting tempo (say 115bpm) via tap tempo and then leave that kit then return to it the tempo is where you left it, not as you programmed it. It’d be nice if there was a tempo control switch per pad that allowed tempo to be sticky (stay as you left) revert to programmed and another option to make tempo follow the sticky from another kit. Firmware update could do this. Going back to a kit I left earlier to then have to reset the click is annoying. Old one reset back to programmed.

Less than 5msec? I'll be using this with VST's like Battery 4 and Toontrack's Orchestral Percussion SDX. Any issues with that? I found out that multifx stay as you left them when you set up the patch, so if you set up a delay at 40% feedback and 60/40 dry/wet mix it’ll be that when you go to a patch, but if you move the decay with a control knob it’ll change it instantly, if you leave the patch and come back to it, it’ll be as you set it not as you left it. If multifx were on when you left the patch, they’ll be on when you come back to it.

The two knobs beside the master effect can control VOLUME and PITCH, TRANSIENT ATTACK and TRANSIENT RELEASE, or MULTI FX 1 and 2… there’s a button beside them that changes modes. The sampling modes have disappeared too. No more performance sampling or merge, cut, resample with fx. All gone.

First time owning one of these, I absolutely love it and I am using it as a stand alone kit with a snare trigger and hat and I bought the two pedals. Kt 10 and Fh 9. Basically the setup at 4 minutes or so in this video.
I thinkj the pedals are to be desired. The hat is so off from your sensitity. I really have to hold it down on the pedal hard to keep it closed. It doesnt behave like a regular hat when you plug it in as default settings. Needs lots of tweaking and its a whole new learning curve as I am already overwhelmed with the new dive into the menus and settings of the SPDX.
The kick pedal is OK and I wanted to save weight and equipment. I was playing acoustic kick and hats while playing guitar, harmonica and other instruments in my looping setup and wanted more sounds to loop drum tracks on the fly. I always played acoustic kick and hats on the floor while playing guitar and looping and even though I couldnt change the patches or sounds, the little club setup sounded way better and more feel.
Regardless, for a quiet at home setup in my small appartment with neighbors on all sides, it allows me to play when ever I want.
The only thing I am really scared of and I know its about to happen, or bound to happen is catching the screen and or the plastic around the casing with a stick.
I do have a music degree and played drums my whole life, so I have great stick control and French technique which works great for the small controlled movements of this pad configuration, but even with experience and stick control, I know one day I am going put the stick right into the screen on this thing.
Im already looking for something to put over the screen as soon as possible. Maybe custom cut a couple of layers of a Phone screen protector and cake it onto the LCD of the unit?
Personally I would recess the controls lower than the pads, or even put them on the left or right side of the unit instead of right in front.
You can even see in the video at 4 mintues how recessed the Snare drum position is under the unit. Takes away from playing the edge of the snare at the top of the drum as well which is one of my favorite possitions for pressed and ultra bzzzzzz rolls. If the snare is pulled out too much then the SPDX is too far away and I have even more of chance at catching the LCD screen one of these days. I play the unit relatively flat, as I have played my accoustic drums this way, Low and flat on the toms for quick and little movements without raising my arms. I play mostely from the wrists and the fingers around my whole kit. Compact and tight, with exception of my ride and Crashes, I don't move my arms much around the kit.
Anyway, It's too early to know if I have total buyers remorse yet. So far I think I could of done myself a bit of savings ane skipped the kd 10 and fd9. I have an old Piece Of SHite Yamaha electrick kit. over 15 years old but the kick and a real pedal along with the hi hat controller on the old yamaha doesnt feel much different, if anything almost better on the the old Yamaha. The HH controller from Roland, feels like Crap on this kit. Maybe I just cant calibrate it or set the velocity etc correctly. But no high hat pedal should be tthat complicated to dial in at these prices.
Expensive kit, but is it worth it. Time will tell, Right now I think I would of held off on the pedals.

Like for instance I wanna have some bank letters to hold loops like in ableton and some banks to have kits , and some banks are instruments. I have color coded drum types, like snares are green, hats are light blue, kick is dark blue, bass kicks such as 707 & 808 are always dark purple. Grey or white is instruments yellow and pink is loops.

Okay so question from a synth player who is definitely NOT a drummer... I do not own a drum set and if I purchased this, it would be to use it strictly as a drum set for myself, is this built to stand up to being hit with drums sticks a few hours a day, day after day for several years or is this meant more as a companion to a real drum set? Sorry for the silly question, but I just want to make sure it will stand up to daily abuse, also, is there a recommended stick size and/or type that would be most suitable for use with a piece of gear such as this? Thank you graciously for any insight.

Good controller but from initial observations a few suggestions to make it better. Pads more sensitive (to softer hits) if it can’t be adjusted. Maybe MIDI 2 resolution could help. Can borrow from sensory percussion 2 and spatially zone pads for precision, hands, etc. Remove excess controls like select, execute… smart-selecting and clickable rotaries are better. In firmware, going to factory should reset adjustments too.

Maybe interested, but i need to know : if i have a click tack on pad 1 and a tambourine loop on pad 2 (to be played back in the chorus) - will the tambourine loop play back exactly in time to the click track even if i miss the pad with some milliseconds? Im a drummer in a band, and somehow it could be cool to add some percussion or loops to the sound here and there - but only if they play back exactly in time :)

    • @tcellen2136
      @tcellen2136 2 года назад +1

not in that situation but there are work around. In reality if you are slightly late or early, the loop will still play in time but just not exactly at the same start time. The audience or other musos normally don't even notice this as you are far more aware of this chorussing effect whereas for everyone else, there's always so much out of time/phase shift through sound systems anyway. Here are some ideas: 1. Use the internal click and set the tamb loop to 'trigger reserve'. If you play it too early it will wait til the start of the next measure to play perfectly in time with the click. If you play too late, again it will wait til the next measure to play it in time. 2. Create a click for each sound you'll trigger so the click plays perfectly in time no matter when you play it. This can be great for sounds that have no natural pulse like ambient sounds, backwards sounds and reverbs where you need to play it in time. This click is chosen as the layer for this sound in the SPD-SX PRO pad edit page. It's a new feature where every sound can have it's own click routed to phones only.

Along with loop tempo sync, trigger banks, sample to pads in sequence like the sx (chop) and tempo should return to programmed tempo when switching back to a kit, not at the tempo it was left at when changing. And the app could do with a select all box for note, gate and channel so I can turn off all the midi notes from a patch quickly. Panning delay in the basic delays like in the original too please. .
