Edit: Arena trap doesn't work on Levitate pokemon lol. Just tested it. Note: I did NOT make something clear about shiny hunting Mespirit and some could see it as misleading, so please let me elaborate. At 10:13 when I said Mespirit's hunt is "before the first encounter" that means you have to save at 7:13 's point which is BEFORE you speak to it the first time. This is when it is released from the cave, and the cutscene with Prof. You then have to find it roaming and see if it is shiny WITHOUT auto-save or manual saving between those 2 points. I then go into how I would just regularly catch it at 10:20 and then mention "imagine if I got it shiny" because I know how much of a pain it is. I'm sorry if i did not explain this bluntly. Update: 11.23.21 We now know that if you KO'd Mespirit then beat the elite 4, it will respawn and roam again. It will NOT be in the cave again-which was only in. The new mespirit will have different stats, so we can make an educated guess that it will determine its shiny status again. When Exactly? (ie, beating the champion or the first encounter in grass) more research is needed before a definitive answer.
I've heard you're able to dex check the Mesprit after the cutscene to see if it's shiny; since speaking to it registers it in your dex; not 100% sure if it really works, but it's worth giving a test or teo
I tried using Mean Look with my Gastly, trapped it, and tried switching to my Mew to weaken it, it flees immediately after Gastly is gone. I have not went after roaming Pokemon since Gen 2 when I was pretty young so I forgot this was a thing. Something also worth mentioning for those who use mean look.
When Mesprit went off I assumed the others also were roaming legends. Imagine my surprise when I went to to Azelf to set it off and ended up battling it. I was NOT prepared
i've captured the 3 before Mesprit being the most challenging, but i have Honchkrow & Absol (mean look & False swipe) i just the need the correct balls [WITH CONSENT]
Can I just say how impressed I am that your still doing these Pokémon tutorials, I watched you all the time back in the sun and moon days and I recently came back to your channel to see how you were doing, keep up the awesome content Austin!
If you use a status move on Mesprit then it runs away, encountering it again will keep the status effect, so if you did something like paralysis, you'll have a better chance at getting if with a Quick Ball
One thing about Mesprit is that it won't change its location when you move through a city gate. So, repeatedly flying to Hearthome City in a loop, you can wait until Mesprit is just outside the Hearthome City gates, and then you can just go there. By the way, you can save after each interaction with Mesprit, and paralysis and damage taken will carry over to each next encounter.
Since I was struggling and it didn't come around or it would move so much, I'd tried your method. BEST decision I've done and it was so easy even though it took a couple of repeated flying to have it at the gates but it's so nice to have it in one spot without moving. Thank you!
I tried 100% exactly what you did, and I caught Mesprit. I caught it with a quickball after quitting and launching the game for 4 times at the same spot!!! It was such a pain to chase it tho lol! This definitely helped me saved a couple of hours lol
For chasing roaming Pokemon I recommend Gallade or Smeargle. You can breed a Male Ghastly(with Mean Look) and Female Ralts to bread a Male(For Gallade) Ralts with Mean Look. Ralts by itself can learn Hypnosis to sleep Pokemon and after evolving it to Gallade you can teach it False Swipe. With Mean Look the wild Pokemon cant run and False Swipe and Hypnosis are selfexplanetory. For the 4th Move you can choose for moves like Swords Dance, Thunderwave or a Attacking Move. Smeargle can use the same Moves with Spore replacing Hypnosis for higher accuracy. BUT you can teach Smeargle the Move Soak to turn the enemy Pokemon Type to Water, that way you can False Swipe Ghost Types like Giratina or Rotom.
An extra trick to help catch the roaming legendaries, since the game seems to try its hardest to not move them to the route you're on/near: Fly to Hearthome City, then bike to the border between Solaceon Town and Route 209. Go back and forth until the icon for the Pokemon is on the top part of route 212 while you're on route 209 (being in Solaceon won't work). Now bike from 209 to Hearthome and then to 212. For whatever reason this path doesn't cause the Pokemon to move locations between loads.
Austin's best quality is that he doesn't believe anything until he tests it himself 😂 and if he makes a mistake the comments are where he rectifies it. Makes him the best poketuber around
In case you have accidentally killed one of the lake guardians and you forgot to save, you can go back by two saves. On the start screen (screen with the box legendary and "press a" text), you can hold up, b, and x. You can go to an earlier save. This won't automatically override your current save state. It will override when you save again.
@@TokoFukawasWife I know this is a year late, BUT it says to hold "up" as well. Don't know if it does anything as I haven't tried it myself. Don't have a need to at the moment.

Hey, I love the enthusiasm in your vids. If Shiny hunting Mesprit is the same as in the old gen4 games, you need to save before encountering it at the lake, then look for it in grass, and reset to before the cave encounter if it wasn’t Shiny. I dunno if that’s still true, I just noticed you saying something different. Maybe look into it again.
So I did a LOT of research on that before making this video, and now rewatching I understand how when I said "first entouner" then went into the method for a regular encounter; I see how it is confussing/misleading/easy to misinterpret. So I put it as a pinned comment the SPICIFIC way to do it. Thank you for letting me know it was unclear. In addition, i reached out to the dataminers to see if the post-Elite 4 method is still viable.
Pro Tip: Bring a Level 50 Absol with False Swipe / Thunder Wave / Swords Dance / Mean Look. Perfect for all Lake Guardians and Creselia. All Lake Guardians have Extrasensory/Psychic/Imprison with a defining move (Uxie - Amnesia / Mesprit - Charm / Azelf - Nasty Plot). Creselia can only hit with Slash and has Moonlight, making it more annoying. With a Level 50 Absol + Repel on the route with the roaming Mesprit / Creselia, use Mean Look first, so that it doesnt run away, then Thunder Wave and start False Swiping. Or Quick Balls (LOL!), technically in 10 encounters with a 10% chance with a Quick Ball, most likely it will be caught. PS: To shiny hunt either Mesprit or Creselia, its shiny value will be dictated when you first meet it, meaning when it runs away. So better have Autosave Off, since you´re gonna spend some time trying to see if its Shiny or not.
One Pokémon particularly useful for the Lake Guardians is Murkrow. It can’t be touched by any of their attacks. It has Mean Look to trap Mesprit (which it can learn before level 50 such that Repels can still be used). It has Thunder Wave to paralyze them. Finally, it learns Night Shade to lower their HP is consistent chunks.
thanks for this guide! i have a burning need to catch the lake spirits since when i played diamond, as a 7 year old who never played a pokemon game prior, i missed out on one or two of the lake spirits i think? it haunts me to this day when i check the old save. i’m determined now.
For the lake guardians I highly recommend bringing a dark type Pokémon, because they only have psychic type attacks, so it cannot hurt you ever, so you can sit there and throw balls for a while
If your playthrough is like mine, Mespirit didn't get caught after the first 30 fast balls. So, I took a few hours "chasing it" down, weakening it, getting it to 1 HP, putting it to sleep, just to save in front of an encounter where the quick ball still wasn't catching it 🙃 So heck, I used mean look and caught it on my second ultra ball. Tips for "chasing" it: 1) Apparently after the first encounter when it flees, if you have repels on it wasn't encountering for me, I needed to not have repels on for it to pop out of the grass. 2) After you injure it, it keeps whatever status effect you have on it and it's health will be the same as your previous encounters. Got it to 1HP through false swipe? From now on it has 1 HP until you KO it or capture it. Sleep? It will flee when asleep and will still be sleeping when you see it next. 3) To "chase" it I just kept flying to Floaroma Town or Sandgem town repeatedly. Pick one. Just keep flying there (even if you are there). It will reset where it starts off and if it starts next to you, predict the next route it will be which would be next to you. It likes to stick in a "region" of the map for a short period, so it doesn't usually fly all the away across the map afterwards. (You can save if it spawns next to you). 4) After two normal Pokemon encounters it moves on to another route or region, so soft reset game. This made chasing it easier. The part that took me 1 hours was Quick ball not catching it, 30 minutes "chasing" to wear it down, and 20 minutes trying Quick ball again when its capture should have been guaranteed 🤣.
If we're basing this off the original games, the shiny mesprit is generated after talking to it, so saving Infront of the bush won't make it shiny. I recommend you change the mesprit section if I am right.
Thank you so much for these super helpful videos Austin! These makes things a lot easier to progress through! I have to say I'm super loving the diamond and pearl remakes and hope everyone else is too! 😊😁
Mesprit's health and condition persists over multiple encounters. I chased it a total of 4 times: 2 encounters to get its health to the red section, 1 encounter to paralyze it, and the last time it was weak (red) and paralyzed, but was also the first turn, so I used Quick Ball and got it the first try. The whole process took less than 10 minutes.
Hi, awesome video as always! Big fan! One thing, though: The positon of Mesprit's 'face' on the Pokétch map does *not* mean that Mesprit's exact location is further north/south/whatever of that route. You definitely can encounter it in any grass patch of the corresponding route (or even by surfing I think). Always has been like that, if I'm not mistaken.
Most routes have one encounter table and the marking map icon just centers. A few routes, mostly Route 204, have separate encounter tables for different sections of the route. In 204’s case, the split is at Ravaged Path. Roamers on 204 will either be in the upper or lower half, and move between the halves as though they were separate routes.
I remember that back in the old game if you managed to lower Mesprit’s health, the next encounter will have the exact low health as the last time. I wonder if the same mechanics applied to BDSP
If you're trying to get the roaming pokemon, and legendaries in general, I highly recommend getting a garchomp with max attack EVs, and with false swipe. Been doing it since the originals. Also, go to turn back cave and get a level 65ish haunter, use 2 heart scales and teach it mean look and hypnosis. Buy some X special defense and accuracy items. First handful of encounters with mesprit/cresselia just worry about hitting it with false swipe and getting it asleep. For the final encounter you wanna use mean look and keep it asleep as long as possible. Haunter is weak to psychic moves so use x special defense, and use x accuracy to make sure hypnosis works every turn, then spam pokeballs. It's nice to have wobbuffet as well, in case haunter gets KOd and you have to switch out to heal. I personally like catching legendary and rare pokemon in luxury balls since it's my favorite design, but it has a low catch rate. Worth it though if you know how to deal with these pokemon!
3:37 dude the moment you mentioned the dusk ball I was like OK let's try that while trying to catch Uxie. It shook once and got caught. I only had to restart twice and caught it after only throwing 2 balls. Thanks for the advice!
Anyone who’s using the quick ball method to capture Mesprit and it’s taking a while just be patient, it took me about 20 times lol thanks for the help! this tutorial was great
Hi Austin. Just wanted to say thanks for all thie BDSP content. I’ve only just got this stage of the game and managed to get Mesprit on attempt 8 using your quickball method. I really appreciate all of your guides. Much love my friend.
So funny thing. I've been trying to catch Mespirit for a very long time and as soon as I watch this video and try to catch it I finally get a critical capture and it goes in the dusk ball. So thank you a lot you've gained a new subscriber
Recommend an Absol from the underground for these 3 (if you've beaten the champion you can catch them in the low 60's pretty easily). Can buy a False Swipe and Swords Dance TM from the department store and teach them to it, and it can also learn Thunder Wave via TM, but that comes from the Battle Tower (32BP for replacements). And as it is Dark type, it can't take any damage from any of the three. Just quick ball, swords dance x3, false swipe x2, and then status if you want (Thunder Wave or another pokemon) and get to the dusk balls and timer balls. Additionally, Absol can learn Mean Look via Egg Move, so you can breed it onto an Absol and it'll be great against Mesprit too!
Just decided to go back and complete my Pokédex today. I followed this video and your other video advising which pokeballs to use and of course used the quick ball at the start of my battle with azelf and caught on the second try. I tried it the first time and didn’t catch but then restarted the game and boom caught thank you my dude
Thank you so much I just caught all three of them the same way you did and the last one I restarted the game four times and caught it with a quick ball on the fourth try
Murkrow is a really good Pokemon to bring on the Mespirit hunt. If you bring him with mean look you can trap the Mespirit but also all of Mespirit Moves don't affect Murkrow. So you can wait out the Mespirit with time ball or Ultra Ball
My 8 year old and I are loving the tips. We are building teams to battle off. My video suggestion would be the build for a well rounded team. I know each gym would benefit for different builds. But was thinking of the best well rounded team you can build before post game.
I remember sitting in a coffee shop parking lot with my friend using their WiFi to trade Pokémon on our DS in the originals lol loving this play through!
Idk how, but I have been doing the quick ball thing for 2 hours now, and still haven't caught it. I enjoy the quick ball method better, but seriously, my luck is horrible.
I went for them normal but mespirit i had my umbreon at the front of my party used mean look straight away and i mad some mistakes but i had my gliscor use false swipes when it was on yellow health then he ran and caught him this time keeping umbreaon in mean looked it and he was able to keep it at bay due to psycic immunity
For Mesprit, if you deal damage, it’ll keep the damage being dealt. Therefore you can still encounter it. The lower the hp, the rarer it’ll appear. The patch of grass does not matter in the route.
Edit: Arena trap doesn't work on Levitate pokemon lol. Just tested it.
Note: I did NOT make something clear about shiny hunting Mespirit and some could see it as misleading, so please let me elaborate.

I personally like catching legendary and rare pokemon in luxury balls since it's my favorite design, but it has a low catch rate. Worth it though if you know how to deal with these pokemon!
Better use a max atk absol. Absol can learn false swipe. Thunder wave. And is immune to all mesprit moves. And also immune to cresselias stab
Keep up the good work 👏
3:37 dude the moment you mentioned the dusk ball I was like OK let's try that while trying to catch Uxie. It shook once and got caught. I only had to restart twice and caught it after only throwing 2 balls. Thanks for the advice!
Just about to look for them thanks Austin!
Austin is pumping these guides out faster than the loading screen can load
Sneasel is best for capturing the three. moves can’t hurt him so he’ll never faint and can learn false swipe
Bronzong is great for Mesprit. 1/4x from Psycho and learns 'Block' to stop Mesprit from fleeing.
That balls line has me literally crying 🤣🤣🤣
Anyone who’s using the quick ball method to capture Mesprit and it’s taking a while just be patient, it took me about 20 times lol thanks for the help! this tutorial was great
“Uxie is the bulkiest”
Immediately I catch it first turn with a quick ball.
0:26 smooth my dude 😂😂😂
Got it with a dusk ball without much trouble. Thanks! You always deliver when it comes to pokemon guides/tips
“What balls you should be grabbing and what balls you shouldn’t be grabbing” god dammit Austin 😂
Wow…awesome video and restarting the game and using the quick ball worked on the 2nd try!
Apparently to shiny hunt it you have to check the pokedex and save before the cave. You shiny hunt it before tracking it down
Recommend an Absol from the underground for these 3 (if you've beaten the champion you can catch them in the low 60's pretty easily).
I love how on the attempt that you caught Mespirit, You got the animation for telling you it's a high IV pokemon
I just binge flew on a city until Mesprit spawned next to me.
Me watching this while I’m about to go to my 5th gym :P
My 8 year old and I are loving the tips. We are building teams to battle off. My video suggestion would be the build for a well rounded team. I know each gym would benefit for different builds. But was thinking of the best well rounded team you can build before post game.
Thank you for this video!! I caught Mespirit in two saves haha it’s nice having all three!
Just caught mespirit first try quick ball and it landed on route 205 as i was there within 2 min. Thanks Austin!!!!!!
Thank you we love Austin John 😁😊
I used the quick ball method for Mesprit and got it on my second try! Very thankful for this video lol
I remember sitting in a coffee shop parking lot with my friend using their WiFi to trade Pokémon on our DS in the originals lol loving this play through!
Is it just me or did he say "I am going to through this Absol into the party for right meow" ... lol
I got the pink one on the first try after using your method! Thank you!
3:40 just as you said let’s use a dusk ball in a cave
I caught zapados using a dusk ball
They’re the best In game
In desperate need of a poffin and berries video, I’m learning more stuff myself than I can find online :(
LOL thank you so much it has been so long since I’ve played the original games this really helped me a lot
Thanks for uploading all these guides
I finally got all three of them thanks Austin you deserve a subscribe.
If you want to shiny hunt them you can let them knock you out and they stay plus you get the Dex entry.
Thanks for this Austin I've been trying to find these 3 for to long now 😅
what was it that you said about Paralysis lowering the catch rate? it was at the 3:00 min mark. Is that true???o.0
Idk how, but I have been doing the quick ball thing for 2 hours now, and still haven't caught it. I enjoy the quick ball method better, but seriously, my luck is horrible.
I encountered Azelf but I wasn’t ready, I was so thankful that I caught Palkia without the master ball.
Literally caught azelf first turn with a quick ball when i got the notification for this video lmao
Thanks Johns on my second day trying to quick ball this Kirby looking thing
I like the mirror floor too it is dope.👍👍 Big fan!!!
10 min to get Mesprit in the right route, but caught it with a Quick ball at second try! Thnx bro!
Thanks so much! This helped a lot
Got my Mespirit first quick ball to complete the Pokédex and I’ve never been happier
Me watching this having caught the lake guardians a few hours before this video: “Ah yes, this is interesting”
X accuracy for putting them to sleep is amazing. Turns a 60% Hypnosis into basically 100% Hypnosis.
11:32 WARNING Arena Trap won't work on Mesprit since Arena Trap only works on grounded pokemon and since Mesprit has Levitate it isn't grounded.
It took me THREE for Mesprit !! Thank you so much lol
I'd also recomend putting out a dark type if you're at the stage of the encounter when you're just throwing balls. They can't hit them.
Houndoom to the rescue!
Great video man, helped a lot! Thanks
After 19 you’re almost guaranteed 😭 takes me 40+ lol
Thanks for the vids of course
I went for them normal but mespirit i had my umbreon at the front of my party used mean look straight away and i mad some mistakes but i had my gliscor use false swipes when it was on yellow health then he ran and caught him this time keeping umbreaon in mean looked it and he was able to keep it at bay due to psycic immunity
I have watched all your videos on these games even though I played diamond, pearl, and platinum in the OG trilogy
If you’re gonna synchronise Mesprit, you need to lead with the synchronise mon on the encounter that you successfully catch it.
For Mesprit, if you deal damage, it’ll keep the damage being dealt. Therefore you can still encounter it. The lower the hp, the rarer it’ll appear. The patch of grass does not matter in the route.
This tutorial helped me get Azelf and Uxie and also for Mesprit I got it in a quick ball first try
So lucky!
Caught the last two first try first one was a pain but ur guide was absolutely clutch
thanks dude..only take 2 try for the mesprit...thanks alot..
