I don't understand, what NATO troops are ambushing them? They look M14 instead of MAS-49 so they are not French. Unless this are the early days of BMP-1 where the M14 is still around?

Nice, my friend. These're BMP-1 that before BMP-2 and 3. But these're American Army using old school from WW2. Carbine, Garand, Thompson, Grease, Bazooka, B.A.R. And Recoilless Rifle. Now they're using M14.
The M14 are using for Vietnam War.
