The song was written by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers (of the band Chic).
In a 2011 interview, Nile Rodgers said "Diana Ross was the first big star we ever worked with and we took it very seriously." Rodgers and Edwards interviewed her for several days. "This was the first time in her life somebody cared about who she was; what she was - everyone previously had treated her the way we had treated Sister Sledge - they got her in and said 'Sing this'. We (took a more personal approach)."
As would be widely reported later, their studio liaison with Ross was not a success. She disliked the results of their sessions and gave them specific remixing instructions; they made slight changes and suggested that if she still did not like them, she could get them remixed herself. Ross did so, reworking the whole album with Motown producer Russ Terrana to downplay the funk element and make her voice more prominent.
Rodgers and Edwards were initially furious, and considered having their production credit removed. They eventually decided to leave the track unedited, as the sound they used for Chic remained heavily influential on the album. The LP became a platinum-selling No. 1 that spent a year on the American chart. Ross left Motown soon afterwards for RCA.

It is impossible to not tap your foot to this tune!! Love the lengendary Diana Ross this lady is still rocking!!! I remember when this song came out even rockers who hated disco dug this song. They would say this is Diana Ross she was the lead singer of the supremes so its cool to dig this!!! Lol

Bernard Edwards is just going crazy with that bass at the end. There was a rare extended version where he really went crazy that I've been looking for decades later.
Interestingly is that's bass and guitar or just bass seams to pure for just bass..

This sooooo awesome. I love the bittersweet tension of the strings so much... that I really DID NOT realize how incredible the GROOVE of the other instruments really is.
I say this with all humility, because (embarrassed to say)... I was a DJ (77-89) who imagined(?) I was competent at deconstructing music in order to "mix" it.
This mix... which I'm LOVING ...at the same time ...showed my I don't know what I thought I knew. Wow.
Awesome interpretation that's (mercifully) free of all the excess effects/hype that can (potentially) ruin a composition.

I've been a CHIC fan since primary school. Obsessed back then and met them once, Nile Rodgers several years ago in the 80's with Duran Duran, PowerStation, concerts and other events. The late Tony Thompson and Bernard Edwards with Nile made for in my opinion the most prolific, productive, and tightest power trios in the history of the music busiGod's! As a musician at university I analyzed their work and the genius of it. The Groove Gods!🙏🙏
