The song was originally recorded by The Trammps in 1976 and released as a single. It was supposedly inspired by a scene in the 1974 blockbuster film The Towering Inferno. According to Tom Moulton, who mixed the record, the Dolby noise reduction had been set incorrectly during the mixdown of the tracks. When engineer Jay Mark discovered the error and corrected it, the mix had a much wider dynamic range than was common at the time. Due to this, the record seems to "jump out" at the listener. SPare Extended Disco 12 inches Mix. Peter Radcliffe originally wrote the track as a country song with the title "You're My First, You're My Last, My In-Between", which went unrecorded for 21 years. Barry White recorded it as a disco song, retaining most of the musical structure while rewriting the lyrics.

I am 65 years old (as of Feb 9th yesterday) and after being completely sick of this song the past 40 odd years (due to having to play it long after being tired of it/overplay at and past it's popularity)... out of a truly sincere curiosity I gave this an open minded listen.
