    Ever tried adding a wireless microphone to your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus (and now iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X)? Turns out more adapters than you realize might be needed…
    It used to be simple. You could use a RØDE smartLav+ and connect directly. Or use any wired or wireless mic with a simple TRS to TRRS adapter and be good to go. But now you also need a Lightning to headphone jack adapter. Which actually may not be enough. So maybe you need an Apple Camera Adapter (?!?!) and then a USB audio adapter. Confused yet? It's nuts… but this is what it takes today.

    I have an older Sony wireless kit, URX-P2 tuner/receiver and a UTX-B2 transmitter. I talked with many people which also included a call to Sony with no solution. Sony said the solution was to buy a new bluetooth system. Fortunately, this worked. Thanks for the post! SUBSCRIBED!

    In computer manufacturing (and peripherals), it is designed universally that Red is for Mic (Input), and Green is for Speakers (Output). It's just like the older USB are black, and USB 3.0 are blue :) Thank you for this video, I learned a lot too :)

    Great job Joseph. Studio lighting looks great for these web shows. Someone may have already mentioned this, but you can also verify audio with a external mic with the "Voice Memo" app that comes with the iPhone. Thanks for your efforts to keep us knowledgable.

    Great video but you could have just stayed with the Rode SC4 adaptor. The reason the iPhone didn't recognise the external mic was because you need to power the mic on and connect the SC4 to the iPhone lightning adaptor BEFORE you connect everything to the iPhone port. If the lightning adaptor is already connected to the iPhone before you connect the external mic then the iPhone thinks it's headphones you've just connected.Ohmic resistance is just as poor with your USB configuration as you have just as many connections as the SC4 configuration. Thanks for posting though.

Also there is blue for line in if you ever need to know! Many thanks, regards Book.

    Great video. Exactly what I was looking for and I have since purchased the configuration you showed and it works just as billed. Regarding the requirement for daisy chaining of the Apple lighting-USB, plus Aukey adapter to Sennheiser: What about a simple wired lav, such as the Movo PM10? It does not seem that that configuration needs the Apple lighting-USB/Aukey intermediate components. I just plug the wired lav into the iPhone dongle and it works. Is it because it is not sending its own power, that it can be done without the intermediate pieces?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  7 лет назад

      +Mark Powell Oh, going wired is a LOT easier. Use a RØDE SmartLav+ and the Apple Lightning adapter that comes with the iPhone and you’re set. All this complication is to go wireless.

    I was wondering if I use a Zoom H1 recorder and then connect the USB External adaptor to the Apple Lightning to USB 3.0 connected to an iPhone 7 Plus. Do you think it would work and could I use the native camera app or do I need to purchase the app that you were using?

  • @jimdandy56jd
    @jimdandy56jd 7 лет назад +1

    Thanks for the video Joseph! Is there a similar setup that can transmit directly from the audio board to the setup you have connected to the phone, instead of a microphone? My church is Facebook live broadcasting and we are only using the on-board mic with poor sound quality. It gets us by in a pinch though. Any "low cost" ideas would be appreciated.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  7 лет назад

      +jimdandy56jd So you want to stream from the iPhone but get audio from the sound board? Sure… don't see why that wouldn't work. Just run the same adapters on iPhone (camera/USB adapter and a USB audio adapter), then either run a wire from the board to the phone, or set up wireless like in this video, and send a line from the board into the wireless transmitter. Another option to consider would be a Mevo. More options and with the boost has USB built in.

    First off, Thank you for making this video, it was very informative, to a first time viewer and new subscriber ! I’ve searched everywhere and finally I have answers, I enjoyed all your frustrations with the Apple lightning jack setup on the iPhone7 lol . I’m Starting to think I was the only one who needed a mic in port that actually works (unlike the digital av adapter ) when paired with the included lightning to 3.5mm cable. (It Must be a charge only port on the av adapter?). Thanks for the alternative suggestions. Definitely will utilize the affiliate links to make my purchase! The haters want a “plug this in to this and bam ! “ Type of video. That doesn’t teach them anything, which is why they are here in the first place ! To learn something! Great video! Thank you so much for the video. Is there an option for being able to attach a corded lavelier smart mic to an iPhone 8 plus? I have the lightening to usb camera adapter, purchased one of the USB audio adapters, and then the microphone. It appears that the microphone is still not registering on the phone. I'm sure it is something simple, but I am at a loss as is every one I ask for help.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      What do you mean by “smart mic”? Brand and model? Corded is easiest; use the RØDE SmartLav+ geni.us/cnZbGSn and all you need is the Apple lightning to headphone adapter that comes with the iPhone. The key is that the tip of the microphone is TRRS and not TRS. If it’s TRS, adapt it to TRRS with the RØDE SC4 geni.us/F8sl2 then connect to your Apple Lightning adapter.

    Thank you so much for this! You saved me and few others from going around the shop scratching heads to get my iP7+ system running. Already have a G3 system. Gonna get that USB audio adapter + Lightning cam adapter. I see few other cheaper USB OEMs out there. Would those work too (sans charging/lightning port). Bluetooth wireless mics might work great but you're then limited to 10 meters optimal range vs the 200 meters fm the Sennheiser G3. Do you mount your setup to some kind of rig? YOU ROCK!!

    Hey if you have a Rodelink it will be a lot simpler TRS to the transmitter and the TRRS to the Phone lightning adapter, without those adapter junks that takes up space and too hassle.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      Have you used that configuration? I don’t see how the RØDElink is any different. You can’t go from the receiver into the TRRS-to-lightning adapter because the impedance is wrong and you get no audio coming through. Plus, the RØDELink is digital and in all of my testing of many digital mics, very subject to dropouts. I haven’t tested the RØDELink so maybe that one works fine but I’ve yet to find one that does.

    Thanks for the video! Great to see a dedicated personable craftsman out there doing his thing :) Huge question for you: I’d really like to be able to monitor the audio live. What other hardware could I use to do this. I need to know what the phone is capturing while it’s capturing it. Any way you can think of doing this? Getting the audio feed back out of the phone? There has to be a way because I can get live monitoring if all if the phone button pressing and ringing and interaction sounds using the head phone jack on the USB to mic/headphone jack. Thanks! Also any recommendations of a great broadcast camera with an SDI output to go into a livestream box? I’m looking for just the right one and thought there might be some good suggestions. I’m looking at perhaps the canon fx405 but looking for something not so expensive but with a good dynamic range... something stable, professional looking and something a newb could manage. Thanks again!

  • @kuliatv
    @kuliatv 7 лет назад +1

    Funny - impeeeedance != impotence
    Do the USB audio adapters let you monitor the audio? The meters show an audio signal, but I've been bitten by crackly audio once when I wasn't monitoring by ear and relying on my camera's signal meter. That only happened once - never again, as I alway monitor unless I'm just shooting b-roll.
    Also, the Rodelink Wireless Filmmaker kit is a great alternative to the Sennheiser (I've owned the G2 and now have a G3 along with a couple of the Rodelink sets). The G series operate in frequency blocks that the FCC is selling off - I think my first G2 set (long since sold off) cannot be operated legally in the US. Since the Rodelink operates in the 2.4GHz band, it's not likely to be obsoleted by the FCC. Bonus - 2.4GHz is also fine for international work just about anywhere in the world where a given Sennheiser pack may be illegal in many countries (and potentially in the US as the FCC grabs lower frequency blocks).

    Thanks for your video. The wireless mic that I just bought has a receiver with a 1/4" jack, not the 3.5mm jack like yours. If I add in the 1/4" to 3.5mm TRS adapter to the other adapters that you showed, will my phone pick up the sound? Does this make sense?

      +Dustin Ray As long as the jack has the same configuration in and out (i.e. TS or TRS) then yeah it should work. But what is the mic? I can't imagine a wireless lav with a ¼" port. XLR, sure… but ¼" sounds weird.

    Do you realise that if the used a digital in you could have 4 audio tracks or more. Think about it, you laptop audio interface has a single usb cable, but it can carry a ton os tracks. You can now connect that same uSb audio interface to an iPhone. That is brilliant. The problem is that everyone is stuck on the analog minijack.

    • @photojoseph

      That’s a good point. The digital interface on the iPhone could do so much more!!

    Hello dear,
    I followed the same procedure, but the mic (and even the earphone) wasn't recognized by my iphone seven plus. My mic is wireless "Boya BY-WM5", I connected it with a "Lightning to USB Camera Adapter" and "USB 2.0 External Stereo Sound Adapter". Please can you show or describe me any other way to make this problem fix, cos I spent lots of money on it.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  7 лет назад

      +Ahmad Rishad Hm, I can't troubleshoot it without seeing it. Maybe try another USB sound adapter? Those are cheap and maybe yours is broken. Also be sure you have the mic in the right jack. They aren't always clearly marked.

  • @BryanRomaine
    @BryanRomaine 6 лет назад

    Do you use some kind of external preamp rather than using the preamp on the phone? Is the quality good enough? Rode do a radio mic/lav which has a preamp on the receiver. Any view on the pros and cons of using the Rode radio mics with preamps vs the G3 mic setup that you have?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      Hm, interesting… I’m not sure if the USB adapter is acting as a pre-amp? Or, does the Sennheiser receiver have a pre-amp? Admittedly I’m not that versed in this. I haven’t tried the Rode mic your’e talking about, so I can’t compare, but it’s certainly worth trying.

    • @BryanRomaine
      @BryanRomaine 6 лет назад

      I'm not sure. When using a mic with a dslr, people turn down the amp on the dslr and plug the mic into a preamp first, so they're adjusting input volume using the preamp. Some rode mics -- including, for example, this rode radio mic below, has a 20db gain button added into the receiver, so it's boosting the signal prior to it getting to the electronics on the phone. It's important as good pre-amps mean you can turn the volume up without getting hiss (plus other reasons). I'm thinking about shooting on a range of equipment and am not sure now as to whether to use senheisser or this rode. Hopefully I'll get to test some of this out somewhere before buying.

    Hey Joseph, one year after brodcasting this clip here is my question to you: In the meanwhile, is there a cableless solution (connection from receiver to smartphone) on the market? A bluetooth/wifi/ lavalier mic solution so to speak? It's just too many cables, right? Especially with the lighningconnector... Cheers from abroad!

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      The one from SAMSON is nice but it’s digital and has bad dropouts if it’s not line-of-sight. And no analog mic will have a digital connection so no… no better solution. Here’s my comparison of mics that include the SAMSON if you haven’t seen it: ruclips.net/video/Z0PVtim0Ylk/видео.html

    • @BorisCzizikowski
      @BorisCzizikowski 6 лет назад

      I actually meant a bluetooth microphone that pairs directly with the iOS, so that I do not need a connection via lightnig or jack.
      btw: in the meantime (?) there is a Rode TRRS-Cable available. And the sound is much better, than with the double adapter solution (and the cable is cheaper, too...) Maybe you want to update your vid on that... ;-)

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      No BT mic that I’m aware of. The RODE adapter is good for sure and I have talked about that many times for a wired solution. It’s been so long since I did this video that without watching it again I don’t recall the exact setup but I don’t think that TRRS adapter has a place in here. What would it replace?

    • @BorisCzizikowski
      @BorisCzizikowski 6 лет назад

      PhotoJoseph the usb adapers. You can use the lightning to jack adapter that comes along with the iphone and connect ist to the trrs cable from rode. Saves money and enhances soundquality a lot

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      Have you tested that? Because it doesn’t work, at least didn’t on that generation iPhone. I am pretty sure in this video I discussed this and explained why. It has something to do with impedance. I don’t remember the details now but what you’re saying sounds like it should work, but doesn’t (or didn’t).

  • @NinaYogaNow
    @NinaYogaNow 6 лет назад

    I think it depends on type of microphone you using. I got a kimafun wireless microphone and I just connect it direct to headphone jack adapter and it works fine. Maybe iPhone uploaded something ?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      No, the iPhone wouldn’t upload anything. It’ll have to do with power on the pack. Remember how it sort-of worked at certain levels and also with the other mic. But even if yours does work, you’ll likely have better and consistent results with this setup.

    • @NinaYogaNow

      PhotoJoseph because of the video I ended up purchasing my micro with apple lightening camera and sabrent USB external sound. So I tried it just like you did on the video and it didn’t work. So I wondered if it was the micro once everything was brand new. It worked on my husband Samsung by direct connection. So we tried on my iPhone 8 just by using their cable and it worked for 3 min. I haven’t tried doing longer videos. I will try tomorrow. I don’t know why with the way you taught my micro didn’t work. My iPhone was zero sound and it installed the lightning camera adaptor just fine. ??

I received today so I spent the afternoon like a monkey and ended up like a dumb to my husband lol he just connected on his phone and ta da and I was “no but yours is Samsung” and when I saw he tried on my phone with normal cable and worked. I know compared with your micro this one is like garbage quality but for me as long as the voice keep stable while I walk around it’s useful. I am really not a tech person so I can’t tell you about quality at all but I let you know if it works on long videos.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад +1

      Wired or wireless? If wired, get a double headed mic like this amzn.to/2tjx4GK - If wireless, bringing them through a mixer would be best, but this should work too… use the RØDE SC6 amzn.to/2pqwKqp which is TRRS on both the inputs and the output. So this SC6 can go directly into the smartphone audio port (or the audio lightning adapter if a newer iPhone), then you’ll need two SC4 adapters amzn.to/2jznU39 to go from TRS (the wireless receivers) to TRRS (into the SC6). Hm, I should totally do a show on this!!

      I get that sometimes with the lightning to HDMI adapter… it doesn’t charge (regardless if the HDMI is plugged in or not too) but usually just unplugging/ replugging fixes it. With the USB, if you plug in the USB along with the lightning cable does it start to charge? I just tested with my iPad and using the USB adapter with just lightning cable connected, it does still charge.

But could not get my wireless mics to work (Azden 330LT). I will get the adapters you suggest and try it. I do like the idea of being able to add power keep the iPhone battery charged. It will come in handy during interviews.

    • @ShaneZeppelin
      @ShaneZeppelin 7 лет назад +1

      Joseph, I purchased the adapters you talk about here and they work. Here's some things I found out during testing.
      I tested 3 wireless units: Audio-Technica System 10, an older Audio-Technica Pro-88W (both single systems), and an Azden 325UPR. All of them work, but the old AT-Pro 88 had the weakest audio input. The New AT System 10 worked great with great sound. The Azden had great sound but only the left channel would work, however the iPhone would record to both channels. That particular unit records one transmitter to the right channel and the other to the left channel but only the left channel would record into the iPhone 7 plus but the iPhone put it on both channels internally. So that unit will work.
      I went a step further and decided to plug in a Rode VideoMic Pro to the wireless transmitter, but a powered mic would not work. I then plugged in my Rode VideoMicro and that worked great. I did one more test and plugged a Belkin Rockstar headphone splitter into the transmitter and then plugged two lapel mics into that. Both of them worked with same audio level. So if two people are sitting next to each other during an interview I can capture both at once. So now I have options.
      Again thank you for posting this very helpful video. Now if only Apple can fix the jello effect I'm getting with the iPhone 7 plus on the OIS lens ☹️

    • @ShaneZeppelin
      @ShaneZeppelin 7 лет назад +1

      Oh, and no you cannot monitor audio thru the USB adapter while recording. You can monitor audio thru it during playback tho. But all of the wireless receivers have headphone jacks to monitor the audio coming from the transmitter.

    Question: why wouldn't you just plug your headphones into the other TRS socket on the USB adapter?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  7 лет назад

      You certainly could, but that wasn't a necessary part of this equation. Oh, do you mean to monitor it? I haven't tried it but I'm pretty confident that this would not provide a feedback monitor; it'd only play back whatever the iPhone is playing. Oh ok so you can test it that way… right… I'm seeing what you're saying now. I think my point here was in trying to use an external mic before I bought this USB adapter and rigged it this way. Without the USB thing you'd have to unplug to verify that your audio was captured with the right mic. But yes you should be right; now with THIS configuration, you should be able to play back your video and verify. So using the Filmic Pro app may not be necessary (at least not for just audio monitoring). But regardless, it's a good way to check levels, too.

      Yes, we live stream. We talk about youth mental health so we try to engage viewers, take questions, etc. We're slowly trying to be more pro. We recently added a nice light, now we have to address the sound. Wired is okay because we are typically sitting indoors. I am looking at the Boya lavalier microphones. Rode makes a two mic into one TRRS adapter. But you raise a critical issue because of the need to adapt it to lightning.

    I film sports so for example volleyball and basketball. I need a mic that I can mic those athletes up that has an internal mic that sounds good but won’t cut out when there are other athletes moving in front of them or if they turn their back to me with the receiver

      Watch the 2019 edition of this video. In there a company shows up that makes mic packs specifically for sports; it's flexible and waterproof.

    Hello, I've watched your video in regard to connecting a wireless mic to an iphone or ipad. I've bought all of the connectors that you've mentioned. I have a two lav mics and can only get mic a to pick up recording. Any reason why mic b will not pick up? Thanks for your help. Chris

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад

      How are you connecting both receivers to the phone? My kit outline was for a single wireless mic pack.

    • @chrisdowdy299
      @chrisdowdy299 5 лет назад

      Just like you had it, exact connectors (Apple adapter and usb adapter). Is there anyway to make both work?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад

      Help me out… do you have two wireless mic sets, meaning two transmitters and two receivers? And you want them both to feed into the iPhone?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад

      One transmitter? I assume you mean one receiver. Unless the receiver is a dual signal one, you can’t receive from two transmitters (the mics) into one receiver. What brand and model mics do you have?

    Is there anything that doesn't have to plug into the camera? I have the DJI Gimbal and you can't use it and plug in a mic at the same time.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  7 лет назад

      +Rick Dancer actually you can; we’ve done it. It’s tricky but it works. We started by adding weight to the other side to counterbalance it but then that wasn’t needed. Just slide the phone far enough out for the cable to fit in, and it works!

      PhotoJoseph I tried it by hooking cord on but it lost its erectile (smile) ability to keep it up. Is this a matter of moving it out farther ?

    I really appreciate these Joseph, thank you so much.
    So I have bought the adapters, and I did a test, talking into a lav mic. IT WORKED! Then I tried what I actually need to do. So - my company is having an event coming up and I'm live streaming it. I'm getting feed out of the sound board and I've plugged my Sennheiser skp g3 plug-on transmitter from one of the main outs of the board, matched up the frequency to the receiver connected to my iPhone and - it's still using the iPhone's mic. It worked with the lav mic... :-(

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  7 лет назад

      +GCC Studios Hm, not sure I follow. So you’re doing the same thing as when using the lav, but instead of plugging the lav into the transmitter, you’re plugging in an output from the sound board?

    • @GCCoop
      @GCCoop 7 лет назад +1

      PhotoJoseph I’m plugging in another transmitter that was part of the Sennheiser kit. It’s commonly used on the end of a handheld mic turning it wireless. So I’ve just eliminated the lav wire and the pack transmitter for this xlr plug-on transmitter that’s connected into a main XLR out on the board.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  7 лет назад

      +GCC Studios Got it. Have you verified that the board is being received by the receiver? It’ll show levels on it. I don’t see how the different transmitter could possibly matter to the phone. The phone has no way of knowing what analog device is plugged into it, much less what is transmitting wirelessly. My money is on the receiver not getting signal from the transmitter. Or, actually, just needing to re-plug or restart the recording app. If the setup worked once it’ll work again and maybe just needs to be reconnected.

    • @GCCoop
      @GCCoop 7 лет назад

      I believe it was but can't remember. Going to try another test here soon and I'll pay closer attention to that. I've restarted my iPhone, unplugged and re-plugged the camera adapter. I was using the voice memo app to test and restarted that app several times as well. I've even took an XLR to 1/8" cable and plugged in the transmitter I had used previously (in case some settings were weird in the plug-on). And still nothing. Makes me wonder whether it might be the board that is the issue? Like perhaps it's sending mono instead of stereo signal, and therefore there's nothing coming out of the board for the transmitter to then send to the receiver. I'll try switching to the other output as well just as another possibility.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  7 лет назад +1

      +GCC Studios Interesting. Please let me know how your next test goes. I can try it on my end too. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

      Yes. I watched that one, too. You seem to imply that some USB audio adapters may not work. Is it wrong for me to interpret your demonstration that way. Either way, I will know soon enough when I try other adapters I've ordered.
