- Jon Faulkner answers some frequently asked questions about his solar recharge system.
In order to properly charge your gear with solar energy, you need all of the pieces: the solar charge and the proper cables that will get a charge to your batteries or gear.
There are a lot of options when it comes to the devices you can purchase. Determine what you need the solar recharge system for and purchase your gear based on that need.

Good Video. But a gear list in the description would be nice.
Very good video. While so many utubers vomit out a list of stuff, you focused on the requirement (power) and methodically walked through functions to meet the requirement...gather solar power, store power, transmit power, and devices. Then you provided several items to meet the need. Excellent!
I have been using the powerfilm lightsaver and standardized USB charging for years even for my 2way. Its not a huge capacity but weighs 5 oz . Thanks for sharing !
My only problem. How will you resupply rechargeable batteries in a grid down? Because the charge in those rechargeables will eventually degrade and not last as long. Or at all. I find this an issue with 18650's
Really excellent video, Jon, thanks. I think your setup is well thought out and flexible. I really like the idea of that satellite relay device to allow texting on a phone. I think I'll pick one of those up.
Another option for a larger flashlight is the Streamlight HL-X. They can run off CR123As or 18650s, and streamlight brand 18650s can be charged via micro-USB. Gives you multiple options on how to power it.
A gear list in the description would be nice like u said
Never forget that for a while in a grid failure you can recharge your electronic with your care. It just takes a few extra products above and beyond what you need to charge at home.
Thanks for the video, I have a couple of these items already, so it's nice to see them reviewed/used by someone with broad knowledge of them. Please add a list of items! Thanks!
Excellent video because of the strong content, well presented.
Strong shopping list too!
Thanks for sharing.
could you please put in a link as to where someone could purchase these items?
I just saw that most if not all of these items are on their Amazon page, see link above. Hope that helps :)
Good video, I simply have some thoughts to help everyone out. First, as far as long or short cables go just get a retractable (spring loaded) one. This way you only need to carry one and reduce weight and clutter. Second, when looking up batteries get the lithium "ION". They are the best on the market right now. Standard lithium's are okay, but not the best. On the topic of batteries make sure to avoid nickel metal hydride (NiMH). They require constant charging and die quickly if left less than fully charged. Nor do they weather well. Most people would think to burry dead batteries, but these are so toxic you can ruin your ground water. Nor can they be recycled.
That's
enough ranting from me. Good luck everyone.
Agree with James Snellenberger, your info video was soooo helpful on so many levels, hiking, backpacking, prepping. Please share links to products. i am already in trial membership trek.
Here in 2023. Where is Jon nowadays? Miss his presentations (& the other guy with beard, sorry forgot name) on Survival Dispatch.
Jon, what is the Anker charge time from dead to full using your solar charger? Have you tested that yet?
Any thoughts on the Anker portable "Solar panels" out of interest?
I’ve used Anker solar charger and battery bank for 4 years. Still going strong and I’m rough on gear.
The reviews i have seen show the Anker and the Rav Power panels do way better in less than ideal light vs the Goal Zero or the Biolight panels. I can arrest that the Rav Power panels will make a amp of power even on a dreary Southeast Alaska day.
@@GlacierPilotGst Thanks for the colour. Sun is a luxury over here in England so good to know.
Great video brother. Love this channel.
Do you feel putting your Power Banks & other devices in the sun to power them with the
*Solar Panel* is safe for them? .. Should you cover up your devices with any material
when powering them up *IN THE SUN?*
I never charge my phone or tablet dirrectly. I use the solar panel to charge a power bank and recharge the phone from that at night.
If it is not too hot, I put the power bank behind the solar panel while it is tilted to face the sun. If it is noon and the panel is flat to the ground, I wad up a bandana and put it over the power bank. You could also use an evergreen frond or other natural vegetation to shade the power bank. And BTW, _liberals ARE Icky_
emphasis on carabiners? cables? pouches? batteries that fit your pack? REALLY?
what about panel charging capability and battery capacity... how long does it take to top off those battery packs without a wall-wart? if you have a video going into that kind of depth, a link would be appreciated.
This was just a quick overview to show the kinds of things you need to have a portable solar charging and storage capability. They have other videos.
The solar panel in the video will put out about 1.5 amps per hour under summer sun if you keep the panel pointed at the sun. Multiply that by how many amps you need to charge your device.
Is any of this emp proof?
Good to Know info, TY
Be cool if they made a Bluetooth solar charger
The one thing I hate is proprietary chargers like my Olight
Yeah, damage or lose it and you're screwed. They're a gimmick that could damage Olight's credibility.
@@05generic it's a shame because the lights are amazing and tough. But the magnetic base has saved me a couple times but a backup USB port would be a great idea
Get their universal USB battery charger cords. Works on just about any rechargeable battery. They work great on my panels in less than ideal light up here in the PNW.
@@05generic I did just realize I can throw any 18650 battery in it so it's less of a problem now
@@GlacierPilotGst yup I have 18650 chargers

“Assessories”
Those solar panels really are useless. Would take almost a week of perfect sun to charge a phone north of 60%.
Just what I need is more shit.
