- On April 20, 1999, two gunmen killed 12 students and one teacher at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Nearly 20 years later, we asked members of the Columbine community - Amy Over, Kacey Johnson, and Tom Mauser, father of Daniel - to write letters to their younger selves and reflect on the two decades since the shooting.

Tom Mauser deserves father of the year for the past 20 years
What'd he do?
@@iamgroot4611 He LOST HIS ONLY SON VIOLENTLY and lobbied for GUN CONTROL!! Wow just wow!
@Ed Kahler because that's exactly what happens in all those developed countries who have gun control... Lot's off school shootings and mass shootings overall, right??!
No... That's in the USA.
You have been putting guns over your kids wellbeing over 2 decades now and it hasn't improved anything.
Maybe it's time to look up to the countries who value children's lifes more than guns and see what they do that has allowed them to not have a single mass shooting or school shooting. Ever.
And look what countries who stopped it did. Unless your ability to buy a gun is more important than children's lifes ofc...
Poor Mauser. I feel alot of sympathy for him. Children are a once in a lifetime connection. Only to find out your child was teased for wearing glasses then shot in the face. If someone did that to my child I would go after the parents. It’s sad that people are not relenting gun control. That’s so pathetic. If gun laws were more tight then Columbine wouldn’t have happened. See they couldn’t bomb because they weren’t able to build a weapon. If they had no weapons at the ready it would have just been a failed bombing.
correction: to this day
Daniel would be so proud of his father.
He sure is ITS amazing
Daniel spirit will feel this
I agree
So proud that when he learned of the shooting at the school, he didn't consider leaving his conference to check on the status? yes, sure he would be

Tom Mauser wearing his son’s shoes the day he passed. I lost it
I am so impressed by Daniel. As a teen, he confronted the areas in his life where he felt weakest. Like, being anxious about public speaking, so joining the debate team. Not being athletic, so going out for track and practicing with the track team.
What a legacy that is.
I’m trying to do something similar in my life, in Daniel’s honor.
WOW, the dad with his son's shoes. My love to them all.
that was Tom Mauser, the father of Daniel. Hes put a great amount of time into activism and making sure that gun violence victims arent forgotten, hes even written a book to him.

Daniel’s father, you are an amazing man.
Dave Sanders was a hero. He saved so much people. I don’t know if all teachers would be able to do it.
Patti Nelson ( who survived ) and Dave Nelson were amazing teachers.
Patti nelson is a hero too, but minor. She evacuated the library, cause no one of the teachers did, so if thr kids in the library dont get evacuated, they will not get down and when they hear shots they go to hallways to see whats happening, luckily Patti Nielson gave them the instructions.
@@Fuccupples she didnt evacuate the library until there were several casualties. I have mixed feelings about her role. I think more could've been done by many different parties that day.
@@mar2d258 At least she saved like 43 Lifes so shes hero.
FoxyTheGreatAnimator HD There was an exit door to outside in the back of the library that she could’ve told the kids to leave through since the shooters were already in the hallway when she ran into the library instead she told them to get under the tables making them sitting ducks she could’ve saved them all by telling them to get out but she didn’t instead she put them in the position to die the 911 operator also should have asked her if she was near and exit and to instruct the students to get out the door was LITERALLY RIGHT THERE and instead she told them to get under the tables
Katie McElwee everyone is an expert. It’s so easy to play Monday morning quarterback now, after all the facts are laid out. The fact that you actually took the time to diminish some strangers role during an incredibly stressful time that you probably can’t even begin to comprehend, makes you look really small.
I am so happy Daniels family was able to adopt a baby. They all deserve all the joy in the world. May God bless all of them.
Daniel would have definitely been proud of his father for the things he’s accomplished 😭💖
Daniel's father is gonna walk in his son's shoes for the rest of his life, amazing father❤
They will be reunited in Heaven ✝️♥️
Tom Mauser is an incredible man. My heart aches knowing Daniel was alive for 15 years but has been gone for 20. It doesn't feel so long ago and time goes far too fast.
Daniels father has to be one of the strongest souls to walk the planet. I’m not sure what he did or what tools he uses, but the entire world could learn from him. I’ve never seen such strength. He isn’t heartless for not shedding a tear and reading his story with enthusiasm. He is a strong soul who has recreated the foundation of his being and now positively advocates and remembers his son and honors him with love and passion for his life as opposed to anger and undirected hatred. That’s amazing.
Beautiful shoes...keep walking for him

When it panned down to Toms feet and revealed he was wearing his sons old shoes and that was when I start crying because he has made his son proud I know it
Aww man the shoes...they got me too!😞
I watched the Ted talk of the mom whos son did the shooting. I dont know if I could show my face like she did. She talked alot about the signs she missed, which I think is very important. I pray for these parents strength all of their days❤
I know by now you must be knowing who the woman is but still I would like to reply to your comment that it's Sue Klebold, the mother of Dylan Klebold.
The old vans shoes at the end really got my heart, the ones he was wearing that day... I cannot stop crying... every time there’s a reminder this happened I pray it will never happen again but it does and it is never ever fair 😔
I was the same age as them, our teachers had us write to the survivers. I remember not knowing what to say, and stared at the blank page. What could I have possibly said to make their suffering any easier for them?!? I ended up writing I was sorry for their loss, they were in our hearts and minds and would be in my prayers. However, there's nothing you could say in that moment to make a difference....

I was a junior in high school when this happened and I was drawn to studying everything I could about it, because these were people my age doing this. We just passed the 21st anniversary, but we should always remember those who lost their lives that day: Daniel Mauser, Kyle Velasquez, Kelly Fleming, John Tomlin, Corey DePooter, Lauren Townsend, Cassie Bernall, Matthew Kechter, Daniel Rohrbaugh, Rachel Scott, Dave Sanders, Isaiah Shoels, and Steven Curnow. May their names never be forgotten and may their families, friends, and loved ones continue to keep their legacies alive.
First, that was a very touching video. Tom wearing his son's shoes is incredibly powerful and definitely got me choked up.

I was only 19 days old when this tragedy happened. Only our prayers will destroy the evil forces.
I'll never forget that day. It was my first year in high school and it had never occurred to my young mind that this sort of thing could/would happen. It scared all of us and took a little piece of our innocence.

Same here

Brought real tears to my eyes. Tom Mauser is such a strong man.
20 years ago in April, I was a 6-year-old due to start school in August. At that time, I was blissfully unaware of the tragedy that had unfolded at Columbine. However, I'm sure my parents knew something - horrible stuff like this tends to make it to the international news, and Germany is no exception to the "Only bad news is good news!" rule.
Eight years later, I accidentally stumbled upon a documentary about Columbine. I was appalled at the dimensions of evil some humans could reach, and initially wanted to turn off the TV, but it was somewhat like a car crash: You don't want to look, but you have to.
Now, at age 26, this tragedy still has a major effect on me. We also had a few school shootings in Germany, and one of them was close to where friends of mine live. I can relate just a little to what the victims and families must have been through. My school has received a threat of an upcoming school shooting in 2009, and that was a big wake-up call for our headmaster.
To all of the Columbine survivors and families: You are not alone. You will always be in my heart, my thoughts and my prayers! Stay strong!
I'm from germany too. When i first heard about columbine it broke my heart. I have some friends who lives in the usa and one friend lived there from 2011 until 2016. Once there was a school shooting in the state where my friend lived. I was so scared and worried. I also was at a school were there was a threat but i forgot which year it was cause i had a panic attack on that day. But it could be that it was 2009.
This was so beautiful ❤️ the shoes 💕😭nobody deserves this. My sisters teammate Alyssa Alhadeff was killed during Parkland. Her mother Lori is an incredible woman who is doing everything in her power to keep Alyssas voice alive today and advocate for school safety procedures
I remember it so well I was eating lunch at my aunts house in California such a sad day. Won’t forget
Tom Mauser’s strength really got me inspired. My heart goes out to him❤️
So amazing, thankful for their courage!
The tributes are beautiful and so heartbreaking at the same time.😭❤
An interesting fact I saw in interviews with survivors of Columbine, it took some kids a decade for PTSD symptoms to appear. I have a family member who was in the #route91strong shooting. That is valuable information to share amongst mass shooting victims, that PTSD can take that long to show up. Especially for children who are so difficult to read sometimes, as teenagers. It seems getting them help regardless of whether or not they say they need it (for anyone really ) would be a wise choice to help a loved one.
Very, very touching!!!!
Amazing how their lives all became uniquely beautiful. The father adopting a son was just too precious.
how do you even move on from this, this is so heartbreaking
My mom was very close to this shooting, 2-3 miles away at a high school. She went into lockdown. She was so scared.
Imagine having a school shooting right next to you- and all the kids lost on that day.
Imagine that once your older and have a daughter you get a text from her saying theirs a shooter. All the memories came back to her that day. I was at school and the drill went off. People ran into the hills and I sat cowering under a desk. 30 minutes later it came out as a false alarm. My mom was so scared.
Heart breaking!!
Amazing video. This tragedy does have a happy ending. I am so happy to hear there are survivors who can provide promise to others!!!
I love the positive and loving way this was done. These people are amazing and show the resilience and care that makes us proud to be human.

20 years today
I was in the 8th grade in 1999 and just entering high school- I remember this but remembering feeling how isolated of an incident this was to me. Luckily for the 4 years of high school there were no school shootings. Then in 2005- one year after I graduated there started that string of shootings and my heart just goes out to each and every person who’s lives where and are affected by these senseless shootings and taking of human life. May God bless you with peace of mind. Xx

I remember seeing it on the news it was scary I think watching 9 11 was pretty tragic to see too at that point I was a junior, I was a freshmen in 99 but i can sense what escaping a school is like because my school was almost fired on too. It almost became a shooting in sept 99 but it was a false alarm. Some kid brought in a silencor so he could end his life.
It was pretty frightening but im still here and I hope these people find peace and harmony in their lives.
