I can answer your "why did Sony use UMD with the PSP?". Well back in 2005 when the PSP was released a Duo Card (yeah no micro SD back then) came in at 128mb, MegaByte..... in capacity. You wouldn't get many games on the PSP with that. So yeah they went their own way with their own proprietary disk based on Minidisc (also Sony) which could hold a whopping 1.8gb of data. That was massive for 2005. Its nothing by todays standards, I've just stuck a "small" 128gb in my PSP, giving it a 7000% upgrade on a UMD or a 99000% upgrade on the 128mb Duo card I had in my PSP when new.
ur wrong micro sd were available in the year 2005 memory duo was a propriatory sony made memory used specifically only on their devices and yes umd was also sony made propriatory disc every thing was sony made which resulted in a lot of money for them cause everything was in house ...
@@podumbrahma3159 Ok I'll concede that Micro SD did "exist" in 2005, but they were a proprietary designed by Sandisk... not sure why Sony would adopt a proprietary memory card when they were also in the business of making memory cards. 🤷♂ You can't even argue they were bigger in capacity as they were all mostly the same capacity as Sony released. The fact is retrospectively people have decided the PSP failed because they didn't use SD cards, which couldn't further from the truth. If you can call the PSP a failure its only because parents generally bought Nintendo for their kids. Sony did the right thing at the right time, show me any other storage medium they could have used that held 1.8gb of data that was small enough to fit into a PSP and be quickly replaced.
Mini-Bluray has 7~GB capacity, under utilized in the market (cheap to buy wholesale I'm sure) and 3 inches in size similar to UMD. Come on Sony, get to retro market sales. *claps hand* chop chop 😄
@@SandyRitchie Good hindsight, I really didn't mind the UMD but an SD card really makes it feel modern. Tech has really evolved and the fact that we can retrofit the PSP with a +128GB SD card is pretty cool.
I always wondered what that metal circle was for that's in the center of the disc. I had no idea the disc was held in place by a magnet. Guess I learned something new. Now if only there was a way to play your UMD games or movies on a slim PS2 or Gamecube, or PS3, PS4, PS5.
Referring to your last sentence….that would be sick man. You could buy an hmdi converter and plug the psp into your tv. Once you’ve done that, you’re free to play games and movies straight on your tv! Don’t know how good/bad it’ll look on a modern tv though haha.
That looks so sick I love technology like discs and how they work and since you mentioned it I own that adapter you mentioned and I have a 128 Nintendo switch memory card in my psp I forget if I had to reformat it with fat 32 firmware or if I didn’t need to but yeah in the end it worked and I have a lot of extra memory even after downloading a few full psp games on my memory card
You know, they totally could do this as a clip on. Maybe replace the laser to read mini Blu-ray discs? It looks cool. As an added bonus you could place grooves atop the disc so that it doubles as a fan, keeping your hands cool as you play.
I don't get why some people are so critical of UMD's, I think they're neat! I've also never run into any disc-skipping issues with the PSP, I get the concern, but the PSP is built better than any of the cheap portable cd players of the time.
memories of when i did this in 2007 with call of duty psp version. the plastic case was scratched and could not return game so took my disc cover off and noticd its just a mini disc lol 😅
You could just open the case a bit on a UMD game which has a case then take the disc out and put in the disc without a case but if you have many without a case you could keep on switching games by doing that
Hmm... My UMDs never broke. I guess they went with discs rather than memory cards to keep costs low, and fend off piracy (which didn't work). Perhaps they have the casing with the idea in mind that it would be easy for commuters/kids to change discs on the go without dirtying them and impacting the readability.
@@ericbazinga No, it doesn’t kill battery life. Sony mastered small spinning disc technology (including battery life and data read protection (aka “skip protection”)) with their portable minidisc players. Some of their MD players had 22+ hours of play (i.e. spinning the disc) on a single AA battery. The LCD and the processor are the two biggest drains on any portable. As for bumping the disc while it’s spinning, unless you’re shaking the thing like a maraca, it will continue to play just fine due to a read-ahead buffer. The reason for the shutter door on minidiscs was because the magneto optical media was more sensitive to surface scratches/dust/fingerprints. With UMDs, they wanted to balance size with some kind of protection because they know kids (and most adults) aren’t great at keeping discs protected.
Do you have the same problem with me? The battery cannot be charged like you cannot open the psp without charging, do you need new battery to make it works normal again, or it cannot be fix? Cuz my psp never drowned before(dropped to the water) please help
You'll need a new battery. PSP batteries are known to inflate, and when that happens you'll want to replace it. (Btw, they can also deflate afterwards, so they'd look normal but they'd still be broken). You can find replacement batteries on Amazon.
I've since restored it a bit, got a new memory card, battery and cover, and a MicroSD adapter for my memory stick. Modded with custom firmware and I'm in love with it. The great games, the AV out, the kickass sound quality (this sounds way better than my phone), just everything. It truly feels like a console and not a handheld. Some of the games I picked up and would recommend would be Ridge Racer, Lumines, both Syphon Filter titles (seriously, holy shit, Syphon Filter is AWESOME!), and Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron. I'm definitely interested in getting a PSP Go, the digital only thing won't even bother me cause I already rip my UMDs to the memory stick. I can just transfer them over to my Go and do the same thing when I get a new UMD game. Rip on my PSP 3000, transfer to my Go. Plus, the Bluetooth connectivity allows me to pair a PS3 controller to it, making it feel even more like a console. I'd love to take this with me on a trip, playing it on the road in handheld mode then plugging it into a hotel TV to use like a mini console. The multimedia features are the icing on the cake, too.
