What you have discovered young man is the effortless and flawless voice of the incredible Karen Carpenter in my opinion, the greatest female vocalist ever !!!
Carpenters tore it up in the 70's 14 #1's on the adult listening charts. have sold 150 million records to date. Karen Carpenter is one in a creation. Rated best female drummer ever in the music world. You will never go wrong with the Carpenters,
They were a brother and sister duo. Her brother Richard composed all the music. She started out as a drummer and became the lead singer. She passed at a very young age from anorexia. She has a drum solo that is out of this world. Karen Carpenter is THE best female vocal ever! Please react to more of The Carpenters, they are iconic!
Richard composed much of the music they did, but not all of it. This song, for example, was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols (and they both composed music and wrote lyrics, so I don't know who did what for this song). Richard did, however, arrange all the music they did, and played the piano for all their songs. He is regarded as one of the best arrangers ever (a couple of other highly regarded arrangers are Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and the team of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA). Edit: I have more recently learned that Paul Williams wrote the lyrics to this song, so perhaps Roger Nichols wrote the music (though there still could have been some contribution by Williams to the music or Nichols to the lyrics).
This song was written by Paul Williams. The first line "talkin' to myself and feeling old" was actually a quote from his mother. She's being talking underneath her breath and he asked her, "What's wrong, Mom?" and she said, "Just talking to myself and feeling old." Classic! Great song.
The late great Ms. Karen Carpenter was once quoted saying she wished she was as good a singer as she was a drummer. OMG on both. The Carpenters "Close To You" album was the very first music recording I ever purchased in 1970 (yes, I'm that old), and I was blessed to hear the Carpenters perform in concert at Arnold Hall at the United States Air Force Academy when I was a cadet in 1975. Rest in peace Karen.
It's amazing to me that true music lovers of any genre, no matter their age, have never heard of the carpenters, who were the biggest U.S. hitmakers of the 1970s?...
Nobody and I mean nobody has ever heard of every artist on this planet, it is impossible, I watch youtube everyday and I'm still discovering new artists, people I didn't know existed. So it isn't a stretch that cvteck hasn't heard of the carpenters, he put Johnny Farnham on the american map, alot of Americans didn't know he existed.
comparing the top U.S.hitmakers of the 1970s who have worldwide success selling over 100 million records worldwide is the equivalent of a Johnny Farnham? REALLY??@@Suzanne-ds7wq
Hell, I was born in 1976 and I don't think I was aware of the Carpenters until my early 20s. I had heard the name, but was too young to remember when they were played on the radio. It wasn't until I met a Carpenters fan in college that I actually heard their songs. I'm certainly not surprised that people younger than me haven't run across them.
I Won't Last a Day Without You Sing Top of the World (the original recording! Not the one re-released years later where they funked it up with all sorts of over twang)
I had to laugh when you said you're old. I grew up with The Carpenters, so I am REALLY old. The Carpenters were a hugely popular group in the '70's. Every one of their songs were hits. You need to listen to more of their stuff to appreciate their talent. The best way to describe their music is "pure." Karen has a voice like velvet and her brother, Richard, wrote and arranged most of their songs and played the keyboard for all of them. Enjoy The Carpenters journey.
Rare indeed. I haven't seen another band with a female lead singer also playing the drums. Everything about Karen was one of a kind, one of the greatest female vocalists of all time, and just as good a drummer as she was a singer. Legend.
Grew up in the late 60s and early 70s. Went to all the concerts from Grand Funk Railroad, Doobie Brothers, Santana, Bread, and many more. Fell in love with her voice when they debuted. Greatest female singer of my lifetime. Even the great Frank Sinatra said she was on the only singer he would pay to go see. Greatest American group of the 70s. Her brother Richard was a genius at finding songs that could be arranged to suit their style of music and her voice. They put A&M records on the map (Herb Alpert & Jerry Moss). Do Superstar, Hurting Each Other, Solitaire, Make Believe It's Your First Time, Close To You to really hear her 3 octave voice range that was simply pure magic. She doesn't just reach into your heart,...she grabs your soul!
It's not unusual that a young person would not know the Carpenters, because they never get played on the radio anymore (except at Christmas). Karen and Richard Carpenter were siblings. Karen was the VOICE of the Carpenters, and Richard was the SOUND of the Carpenters. He produced their records, wrote the musical and vocal arrangements, and wrote some of their songs (but not this one). Richard and Karen also sang all of the background harmonies themselves. They had a string of hit singles in the early to mid-1970s. If you liked this, then you should check out the rest of their catalogue.
Good reaction CV. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. Perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she commands you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch TO you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, recorded more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Close To You, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Superstar, A Song For You, etc. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia.
She was (and still is) the best female drummer of all time. She coould go toe-to-toe with any top male drummer. Also, you do know she was 19/20 years old when she sang this song, right?
Karen had the most beautiful alto voice I've ever heard. I had the privilege of seeing them live in concert in 1976 and they were amazing! So sad that, with all their popularity, she died way too early from starving herself with an eating disorder. 😢 But the shock of her death brought the first attention to how serious eating disorders really are. You are greatly missed, Miss Carpenter. ❤ Also, Don Henley from The Eagles) & Phil Collins are two more drummers that sing lead while playing drums.
Glad you noticed the drums. Most definitely rare, very few musicians can do that. You have no idea what you just stumbled on. Iconic music, Karen's voice will never be replicated, she was so unique and ever so talented.
Yes, I was just coming here to tell him that. If you listen closely to the background singing/harmonies, you can recognize Karen’s voice. Idk if the Carpenters were the 1st to stack vocal tracks for a richer sound but they did it very well. P.S. Give Superstar a listen when you get a chance. It has a instrumental break that is really rockin’!

Best female vocalist of all time. She didn’t want to be out front but her brother Richard pushed her to come out from behind the drums. Richard was supposed to be the star, Karen was always supposed to be second to him. This song hits particularly hard when you realize she is beginning her eating disorder struggle which led to her death at 32. Song after song was a hit & they still have the record for most consecutive top 10 songs. Her voice is the voice of an Angel - RIP Karen, you touch my soul still today❤❤

We've Only Just Begun, Yesterday Once More, Close to You... these are all great songs to get acquainted with the Carpenters. One of the best sounds that came out of the 70s
Phil Collins drums and Getty Lee from Rush bass guitar are really good on instruments and vocals at the same time. Lee also played the keyboard, synth via footpedals at the same time.
CV: "You are not fun; you are old; leave you alone"😮😂 Whammy!🎉 The Carpenters, a brother~ sister duo. I find it amazing that you have commented on the music, her playing the drums, but you haven’t said a word about her voice. I think you need to listen to a few more songs ! 3 number one singles !! 5 number two singles 12 top 10 hits all together, and she died at the ripe old age of 31 of anorexia such a sad story what an incredible voice
At this point, there are 8 comments. If things follow a course, if you don't do a background check on the Carpenters, the background check will come to you. :)
She never had a battle with depression - she was always upbeat and positive and happy go lucky - the chronic depression thing is a myth pushed by misinformed fans...
Her voice is so incredible. They have so many incredible songs, and the way they are put together is just lovely to listen to. A few songs I love, there are live versions of "Mr Guder", seeing Karen on drums always makes me happy. "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" is a fun song, and "This Masquerade" is lovely.
I don't know how to tell you this, but you are young. I was 27 when Carpenters released their first album in 1970. I had seen them a few times before (from when Karen was 16 to 19). They were in a band that preformed at the Whisky-A-Go-Go that band busted up and Richard formed a band call Dick Carpenters Jazz Trio. She was the drummer and he played keyboard or piano and wrote some of their songs (she did not sing back then). ONE of the things that made them special was having a 16 to 19 year old fantastic jazz drummer. Joe Morelo (American jazz drummer best known for serving as the drummer for pianist Dave Brubeck) was her hero. The jazz standard "Take Five" show cased his talent and she could do the drum work for it. Richard was record producer, arranger, pianist, keyboardist, and songwriter, as well as joining with Karen on harmony vocals. Karen started out as drummer than singer. On all but 1 of their albums the only singers were Karen and Richard. On most of their albums Karen's solo was one take, but they would sing the harmonies from 3 to 32 time and stack them to get what Richard wanted.
For drummers that also sing, check out "Hotel California" by The Eagles, check out "We're An American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad, and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Band.
Being a Boomer Generation member, it is INCONCEIVABLE that people have never heard of the Carpenters or the Beatles. Or Smokey Robinsons, the Supremes and Stevie Wonder etc. I'm not Old School, I AM the school lol
@@johnb.2518 I don't mean real-life depression, I'm talking about in the song. I'm saying that she doesn't actually mean rainy days or Mondays as they are only a metaphor in the song.
Karen was an exceptional drummer, and then top that with an exceptional voice. There were a few drummers that played and sang at the same time. I tried but one would override the other. Karen made it look so easy.
You dont know the Carpenters? Karen was one the Biggest female vocalists of the 1970s. Karen really wanted to become a drum player and not a singer, So she really could play the drums with her brother Richard, doing the music. but her voice was too top quality. She had such a sad death. Please react to more their songs. Also Helen Reddy. another top female vocalists of the 70s.

Lead vocalist on drums : "The Band" comes to mind, "Eagles", "Focus", "Genesis", sometimes "Fleetwood Mac", and others.
Man this was way before Saturday night live even came on.
Rare Earth band also had lead singer who played drums. Check out “I Just Want to Celebrate”
loved the will ferrell remark, man. He would have been about four when this was released
You mentioned everything, except her voice 😮
thats usually the first thing people pick up on lol
Phil Collins was the lead vocal for Genesis & they're drummer
He’s never heard of the Carpenters, and I’m feeling old…🤔🤔🤔😧😧😧
For drummers that also sing, check out "Hotel California" by The Eagles, check out "We're An American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad, and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Band.
Check out "we've only just begun"
Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" live version. Trust me you'll love it.
React to Hotel California by the Eagles live at the Capitol Center the drummer also sings the lead and this will knock your socks off
Phil Collins - also lead vocals and drunner
Vocalist on drums is rare. Few examples are Eagles, Genesis, The Band.
Being a Boomer Generation member, it is INCONCEIVABLE that people have never heard of the Carpenters or the Beatles. Or Smokey Robinsons, the Supremes and Stevie Wonder etc. I'm not Old School, I AM the school lol
A song for u and masquerade are some more of her great songs
Nice Will Ferrell call out. Glad you enjoyed the realness of Karen Carpenter.
Thank you for your reactions. Maybe check out Sarah Connor, Nico Santos and the kelly family.
She isn't actually meaning "Rainy Days & Mondays," that is just a metaphor for the depression she is feeling and singing about.
She is not feeling depression - she is a vocalist actress expressing brilliantly the emotions of the song...
@@johnb.2518 I don't mean real-life depression, I'm talking about in the song.
I'm saying that she doesn't actually mean rainy days or Mondays as they are only a metaphor in the song.
@@BrandonFromLYT ok, now that you word it that way , it's much clearer.
Karen was an exceptional drummer, and then top that with an exceptional voice. There were a few drummers that played and sang at the same time. I tried but one would override the other. Karen made it look so easy.
Will Farrell comment. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Will Ferrell was 4 when this song came out.. 😅😅
Have you done any Bee Gees or Meat Loaf?
You dont know the Carpenters? Karen was one the Biggest female vocalists of the 1970s. Karen really wanted to become a drum player and not a singer, So she really could play the drums with her brother Richard, doing the music. but her voice was too top quality. She had such a sad death. Please react to more their songs. Also Helen Reddy. another top female vocalists of the 70s.
Omg, you don't know them? Do you live on earth? I mean really....strange
He's young. It's not strange. This song is over 50 years old. But isn't it wonderful that young people are listening to the old songs.
Anorexia was Karen's battle. 😢
Man, you keep going on about rainy days and about Mondays being a drag. You're missing the point.
It's just how i took in on one listen and the beauty about music doe's that it's great
Hey CVToupee eat another dozen donuts on me! Oink!
You are not old, you just have a good taste of music! 😊
Man this was way before Saturday night live even came on.
