  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Andre is the founder and director of RocShare, an organization encouraging the growth of a sharing economy in Rochester. This talk will show how you can participate in the sharing economy, and examples of the sharing economy all around Rochester.
    M. Andre Primus is a native Rochesterian who has studied urban planning , geography, and dance, and has a habit of nerding out over a long list of subjects. He is the Founder and Director of RocShare, an organization that serves to help encourage the growth of our local sharing economy by helping to connect people, businesses and community groups to promote and participate with each other in making Rochester a sharing town. You can see what he is up to at www.rocshare.com
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The best thing about these ideas is that we're moving away from selfishness. A lot of this stuff happens around the world in poorer countries where people haven't learnt to build barriers between each other. Thanks for giving me more hope for a better future.

Good stuff Adrian! I might add hackerspaces & Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) to that list of "sharing economy" practices.
A lot of good key-terms mentioned here that I'll look into here in Colorado

None of you has faith until he loves for his brother or his neighbor what he loves for himself.
By Him in whose Hand is my soul, a servant does not believe until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself of goodness.
Whoever would love to be delivered from the Hellfire and entered into Paradise, then let him die with faith in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat the people the way he would love to be treated.
You will not enter Paradise until you believe and you will not believe until you love each other. Shall I show you something that, if you did, you would love each other? Spread peace between yourselves.
Be kind to your neighbor and you will be a believer. Love for the people what you love for yourself and you will be a Muslim.
Muhammad, Peace be upon him, 14 hundred years ago

Another model that involves money. "Sharing economy" can be exploitative to their volunteers, or workers. Many workers have to work several jobs in this economy to make enough to survive.
Not relying on your tax money, money from government- funded charity organization and money donation from people is the real sustainable movement: unlike some of these models under "sharing economy" that rent something in exchange for your money is just another profitable form of capitalism in disguise. Do some research on who they took from to start their company before your support.
