  • Which is better, a cat-back or axle-back exhaust system for late model cars and trucks? Dave talks about the differences in the two designs so you can make a better decision on which system is best for your vehicle. One thing to remember with any exhaust modification of late model vehicles is that emissions systems have to stay in place for street driven vehicles according to your local laws. After watching, which exhaust system did you decide to go with, axle-back or cat-back.

    I have a 2018 Subaru forester XT, One of the first things I want to do is to make it sounds a little faster but not overwhelming so I was thinking about the Axelback. Will this effect anything in the long term with this car or is this a pretty risk free change.

    I had a flowmaste super 10 put on my Avalon I then a moth o so later had the muffler shop delete my stock resonator ! the sound differences between the two modifications were night and day! when I had the super ten put on the sound was way better very raspy and had a slight growl to it well as much of a growl a 3.0 liter v6 can make with only a muffler swap! then I had the resonator deleted and thesound got even louder and at idle I got even more rumble then I did with just a flowmaster on! however I'm a lil confused after watching this video when I heard a cat back system also has bigger piping! if I don't have this bigger piping should have it installed?

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  9 лет назад

      babywells87,
      Generally the first three things to add power to most any vehicle are a Cold Air Intake, a Computer Programmer and an Exhaust System. Horsepower gains vary per vehicle but are most times advertised by the vendor that makes the part.

    I have a 2009 tsx (stock dual exhaust)how would i know if its a free flowing exhaust system. And which is better for it a cat-back or axleback. (Note: I plan to install headers and CAI, maybe a throttle body spacer as well?

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  9 лет назад

      +Lzz Irie,
      Well, technically speaking, it would be necessary to install a pressure gauge in the exhaust system and observe what the highest pressure reading is at wide open throttle. Then, the gauge would have to be moved to other points in the system in order to identify the part causing the high pressure reading. If it is the muffler, replace it using one of a free flowing design and retest. If it is the Catalytic converter, replace it using one of a free flowing design and retest.
      As you can see this is a lot of work and expense. This is the reason why most people just choose from the available cat-back exhaust systems on the market and trust that it will help them achieve their desired goal! Don’t forget to re-tune your computer after all these mods!

      Marcos Vazquez, An axle back system can be installed with no adverse effects to anything. But when considering a cat back and other mods such as air intakes or headers you will have to have the PCM retuned because of the added airflow. Otherwise, you may actually hurt your performance rather than help it.

    • @SummitRacing

      It should not be necessary to replace the intermediate pipe unless heavily corroded and you think it may be compromised during the install of the muffler kit.

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  9 лет назад

      Pete McDonald,
      Yes, this is possible providing the SCT tuner has a custom program matching the upgraded mufflers and air intake.

  • @remembertheshadow
    @remembertheshadow 6 лет назад

    Here I hear a turboback /downpipe mod is the only time you'd ever need a tune, from what i've read there are no sensors from the catalytic converter - back so there is no need to tune these mods. Im part of a wrx forum and most people running catbacks never tune their engine. The only time a tune is needed is when airflow is disturbed, and air input into the engine occurs at both the air intake and the turbo, increased airflow without modifying the air to fuel ratio will make the car run lean but this is generally not an issue you'd get from a catback, changing the pipes from the turbo - back would require a tune as the airflow is directly connected to the turbo and replaces the normal downpipe, catback wouldn't because the airflow has already gone past the engine and is just there to be vented out the exhaust, as for back pressure, I have no idea how much a catback would effect it, but I'd assume the more curves in a pipe the more back pressure

    • @remembertheshadow
      @remembertheshadow 6 лет назад

      Maybe catbacks aren't an issue on turbocharged vehicles ? Dunno bout naturally aspirated cars but I've seen plenty of cars with catbacks/axle backs with no tune

      Hi Perry Wisdom,
      Installation of a true cat back system would have allowed more sound than just an axle back because of the removal of the central muffler/resonator and the addition of larger pipes that factory. Also, more power will be realized especially with the addition of computer programming!

    For a cat back do you need to remove the converter??

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  4 года назад

      Hi Juan, No, it connects to the back of the converter or converter pipe.

    Is there any way you guys can post how an axle-back sounds? I'm thinking of getting it for my Hyundai Veloster Turbo and just wanted to hear it before moving ahead !

      Hi Cesar Gomez,
      Exhaust systems sound different on depending on the applications and previous modifications. Your best bet would be to search on RUclips for others who have modified their exhaust system on a Hyundai Veloster Turbo. Let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks for watching!

    Ive got a 11' G37xS Sedan and I can tell this stock exhaust is restricting the power of the engine....wouldn't axle back be a waste in this case ?? I do believe that the G needs to "breathe"....cat back is the way to go, right ?

    • @SummitRacing

      Hi NYYankzz,
      Most exhaust restriction today comes from the OE mufflers. If you are only doing minor upgrades (cold air intake & programmer) to your car, an axle back will work well. If you are digging a little deeper and replacing heads & cam, then a cat-back would be a better choice.

    To save your money just buy a cat back exhaust then you will know for sure that you are having the best exhaust flow that's legal

    Haven't scrolled through the comments. Gonna ask anyway. What effect is the diameter of the pipe on the cat backs gonna mean as far as the car computer? Dyno tune to get it right? Or is it just another my d**ck's bigger than yours thing that's gonna cause your car to run like shit down the road like some other mods that come to mind?

    Do you think the slp loumouth exhaust II is a good choice for a 2012 dodge challenger R/T do you have any recommendations?

    • @SummitRacing

      Hi Chito Sandoval,
      From a horsepower point of view you would have to dyno any and all systems that interest you for your car to see which one produces the most power or, take the manufacturers word for it in the results they saw if they dyno tested it themselves. Now, if you are interested in just sound, research the web and or car shows to hear the different systems that are on the market and choose the one that sounds the most attractive to you. Some manufacturers even put sound bytes on their websites so you can hear their systems!
