Finally, someone said what should be done a long time ago. Thank you, Miquel, for bringing this info to others who thinking can do all in post production. So many photographers make a mistakes what Miquel mention in this video. I was one from this group to till realise how is import start point doing beauty shoots. Better spend more time in preparation for shoot day than playing with bad quality raw file in post. Thanks Miquel for the lesson.
My pleasure! This has been a topic that's been heavy on my mind for the last few months. I'm happy to finally get it out there and hopefully broaden the dialog beyond just retouching techniques. :)
I took shots at f11 too. Specially for magazine . We were looking for strong color presence and pop. Shooting at f11 helps a lot for that
I’m definitely interested in seeing your videos on the different types of light shapers
I've got one I'm working on right now covering how I use beauty dishes with more coming later in the month!
will be waiting for that one !
Agreed. I'm with Terry. Would be a great video.
Miguel Quiles im trying to find a video from you on modifiers 🙏🏻❤️
Thanks for the incredibly informative and inspiring videos Miguel. You're making me want to learn and experiment with so much in portraiture. I've only just started by taking head shots of myself, but by employing the small aperture tip I'm blown away by the quality I'm seeing. Keep up the good work on RUclips it's really appreciated.
Amazing tutorial! Miguel, the way you explain everything, all of the details, and your passion for photography is definitely spot on. I pretty much go off of what you say, being a Sony photographer myself, and it has really helped me in my photography career. I hope you keep making more videos and education us.
This very true and overall very professional coming from a true professional guy. There's a lot to really learn about photography. I try to capture my best image possible on camera and well... have to admit that sometimes I make a poor choices of tools and not to mention good preparation. Thank you Miguel for taking time in preparing all this call to action!
Always helpful!! Thank you so much for all the awesome tips!!
Telling it like it is and not trying to sell stuff, for the most part, is honest and helpful and your new videos keep getting better! Thank you, Miguel!
+Kevin Starks Thank you! It's a topic that's been weighing heavy on me lately and I'm happy people are being helped!
I'm late to finding your channel, but thank you for sharing all of these very valuable tips and tutorials! You're very well spoken, passionate, and obviously very knowledgeable. Great stuff!
First off, I find your videos VERY, VERY HELPFUL!. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I am guilty of using the lowest aperture for the exact same reason you mention (buying a 50mm 1.2 to shoot at 1.2) and I was trying to recreate what I saw other photographers doing instead of figuring out my own style. I'm now trying to shoot at F4 or up to make sure the images are sharp. Thanks for the confirmation!
A ton of great content in this video and the community appreciates you taking out the time to give back. I would definitely appreciate more on modifiers. Thank you.
I've been refreshing, waiting for the light shaper information. Great Tips love it, thank you for all the information.
Wow so helpful! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Thank you!
Best advice on skin tips I've heard, get it right in camera! Then all you have to is tweak it. Finally an honest take!
Love the moisturizer tip especially for men. Never thought of that. Thanks!
Great video! Very helpful for studio work!!
Miguel, this video was very helpful.
Thanks for sharing
The modifier tip is so helpful to me. I'm an amateur working with amature models. Some of them with not the best skin
The sauce i have been need all this while God bless you my brother.
Extremely helpful thank you!
Muchas gracias don miguel..ud es muy diestro en este arte..se le admira mucho..
Great video + great tips .... Thankx !
I really appreciate this video. I wish that you put examples up while you were talking though so we could see exactly what you were talking about. But I really think light is that thing that still eludes most of us, so thank you.
Miguel your videos are great. The background music though hypnotizes me. I feel it competes with your talking.
No matter how much I think I know about photography. I always get the best tips and ideals from this HERO:)
Thank you! As long as we keep learning we keep growing!
Thank you Miguel again...what parrents pass on experience to their children that is what you do for photographers...keep doing this because your work and experience is apreciated...its not about stealing tehnics...its about learning corectly the tehnics
That is truly my goal! Focusing on the things that really matter to help people attain their photography goals in 2018 :)
Hey Miguel! Great video brother! Thanks so much for sharing these amazing tips. Would love to see a video comparing the different modifiers you mentioned (umbrellas vs beauty dish etc) Would really appreciate it!
THX man........u give me RIGHT informations in RIGHT time......really helpful......
Thanks for the tips Miguel. I'd love to learn more about lighting shapes!
+Melissa H Thank you! I think I'll start producing some of those this month. Be sure to subscribe to be notified 😀👍
Excellent video, thank You for sharing! Kind regards
absolutely go over all lighting in the future
Your videos help keep me going trying. So thanks for that. What kinda modifier would you use for photographing older models?
"Life has happened to their face" that's a nice way to comment on someone's bad skin.
It's all good, man 👍
I would love to hear your thoughts on event photos, especially those with 2 different light temperatures.
Would love to see a video on the different light shapers!!!
I still have a lot to learn about post processing. I try to get everything right in camera so I have minimal tweeks. Thanks again!!
I would absolutely love to see a video on choosing the right light shapers. I would also like to see why this is done.
I learn so much on this video - thank you .... I have just started taking pics
So happy to hear it! Hope my other videos help you out too.
Thanks Miguel for those tips!
My pleasure!
THANKSSS! very detailed and clear.
Thanks for watching! Hope it helps :)
Love your work, videos and demeanor...any chance of doing bts of the Harcourt look..ironically the opposite of what you were talking about in this video, in many aspects.
Very interesting and helpful video, thank you very much
+Wendy Ricardo Thank you! Glad you found it helpful 😀✌️
Yes, do video on modifiers! Thanks for your great photo tips - appreciated.
Thank you! I have 2 videos so far and a new one coming this month 😀📸
Hi, Mr. Quiles.
I’ve been catching up with your videos, and I’ve been learning a lot with you. Thanks for uploading them.
As for portraits shots, which is the Kelvin temperature you use? And do you use different Kelvin temperature when shooting indoors and when shooting outdoors?
I like ur teaching .I have godox ad600 n dp 300 godox with godox xl wireless flash trigger which using canon 60d with 18 - 135mm n 50mm. Advice pls
Awesome stuff - thanks👍
+Mitchell T Fransen Thanks!
yes! We are! LOL!! on light shapers that is!! thanks for all the tips!
Help with choosing the right light shaper would be a great help.
You said it, finally someone else said it, Get white balance correct in camera =) its so important to do for more than one reason and i am so sick of people saying that if you shoot raw it doesnt matter, it Does matter. Great video man, really cool stuff, i came here from your cosplay shoot video, and im staying!
Light modifiers! ALSO TALK ABOUT MOUNTS. I’m concerned about what flash unit to get and modifiers that will work with them.
Wonderful vlog. More about light shapers? Yes, please!
+AM M'Mullan Thank you! I have a video coming soon on how I use beauty dishes. Subscribe and you'll be notified when it goes live 😀✌️
I'm casting my vote for a video on the effect of different types of light shapers!
Thx, I feel better prepared for my headshots session this weekend.
With your a7? do you use Standard creative setting or Portrait or some other one? Do you change the sharpness, contrast in that setting? Recently got a 7riii. It has so many options. Thanks for doing these great videos!
Thank you for the tips, these are gems, especially the last one )
In a video you mentioned that you post comment on pictures, is there a place where I can see those, I think many of us would like to learn from the mistakes of others too.
Just curious what about the 50 focal length
Great video, thanks. I'd be interested to hear your views on frequency separation and if you include it in your retouching workflow.
Thank you! Depending on how this video does I'll likely revisit this topic and talk a little more in depth about methods and techniques :)
cool video... thanks for sharing a great help
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Pratik has a great tutorial on portrait Masters as well.
hey you’re probably not gonna reply but what backdrop stands do recommend that are cheap and heavy duty
i love the thumbnail!
+BUON CO. I had a feeling you'd be partial to it 😂✌️
Great Guy
I am a 3D artist who is interested in taking highly detailed photographs of skin (face, neck and shoulders) to use for realistic skin texturing. In my case, skin detail (pores, freckles, varied coloration, etc.) is the goal. The photographs would be front, 3/4 and side close-up headshots (shoulders and up). It seems that I should use your recommended 90mm lens at f/8, or higher, for this purpose. Is that correct? What would your lighting recommendation be in this situation? I would like to reduce specular highlights as much as possible (maybe using a polarization filter, or something).
thank you sir
Thanks Miguel Quiles, am yuh colleague at SLR Lounge Photography Community. Nice work, god advice man. :)
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful. Feel free to share it on the site if you like, I'm not planning on posting it there :)
What about a 5 feet softbox with grids?
My next shoot I'll definitely try f8
also maybe you could go over your retouching methods in the future
What lighting patterns (e.g. Rembrandt short lighting) is best the different skin types?
Love this question! It sounds like a great topic for a future video I'm making. Stay tuned for an in depth answer!
Very informative, Miguel. Getting it right in camera requires knowledge and facility of your equipment, as well as preparation with the subject. Question, I get a number of clients who don't have the resources to hire makeup artists, have you seen any vids that can at least provde them with guidance on areas to focus on if they apply their own makeup?
Thank you for your question and feedback! Personally, I wouldn't advice them doing their own makeup. What I've learned is that it's all part of the process, and applying makeup to go out on a Friday night is different than doing it for photos. I am planning to shoot a video soon with my makeup artist to talk about this in more detail, as she can speak to the topic better than I can. :)
I get that. As I don't live in NY, how would you go about identifying a reliable MUA? I know there are resources like Model Mayhem, but many of the comments and reviews there are self serving, generated by mutual up voting and I'm not sure are too reliable. Also, I imagine rates are regional but how do I determine whether or not their rate is fair?
The best way that I could recommend is to test shoot with them as much as possible before ever working with them in front of paying clients. In this way you learn how to work with one another. For me, I've found my makeup artists via Instagram and by referrals from models I've worked with, but back in the days I would use Model Mayhem with mixed results. As far as a rate goes, try to find someone that is willing to collaborate with you for free to start out, and as you get paid gigs bring them into those opportunities with you. As you work with different people, you'll start to get a sense of what kind of rates would be fair based on how they work.
Thanks!
Thank you for the awesome tips, I have one question, how do you know if someone has great skin?
Thanks! I know by looking at their face. 😁 My makeup artist sees it better though and also does the best she can to make sure that we make their skin look the best it can
Miguel Quiles so having a seasoned makeup artist is a major plus...
@@theodorerobinson2425 It definitely doesn't hurt 😅👍
Everyone shows young models being photographed. What if you have an older client that is 60+ that has life lines & wrinkles, what is the BEST way to photograph. Would love to see an in studio shoot on how you handle it.
Check out my latest video and you'll see exactly that! 👍
💯
It would have been nice if you included pictures as you went to show us examples
@Miguel Quiles
Thanks for the video. :)
Please don't use that second camera angle, it doesn't support your messages.
You would never do a portrait like that, where you look into the right side of the frame.
That would also be weird, watching an anchorman on the news like that.
Excellent information...."You Can't Polish A Turd" :-)
+Marc Cross Thank you! I've got a new video coming on Monday so be sure to subscribe 😀✌️
Done...I shoot Nikon...but I still love ya :-)
Thanks !
You've been spoiled by Sony, I'm afraid (which is fine for me, being a Sony guy). For example, the lowly Sony 85mm f/1.8 is close to TWICE as sharp as the Canon 100mm macro or the Nikon 105mm macro. The most unforgivingly sharp lens someone could slap on a Nikon or Canon would be the Sigma 85mm Art (or a Zeiss Otus, if they're feelin spendy. haha), Much sharper than any of their macro lenses.
People often say that one of the big disadvantages of the Sony system is the lenses, but I'm pretty sure that that's actually one of the chief advantages: a host of brand new, optically advanced glass to use. It's not the greatest if you're looking for nothing but a bargain though, I suppose.
Tip #1: Make sure make-up is applied properly
Tip #2: Pick the right modifier
Tip #3: Pick the right lens
Tip #4: Get the right settings in camera (Aperture, etc)
Tip #5: You can't polish a turd into a diamond
Young kids: Lol, now days PS can fix everything!!
Veteran: hold my coffee mug, Young Buck!!
You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter. :-)
Great video
Mental picture!! Haha Thank you!
Hi Miguel, totally agree with everything you said but I got a problem with your video.
Imho you should show example images when you're talking about imagery, especially when your targeting mostly amateurs with your youtube videos. Why not show the different modifiers and maybe some example portraits!
Cheers from Berlin / GER
Thanks for the feedback. I think those are great ideas. I typically have example images in my videos but noticed that sometimes showing images takes away from the core message. I did an article for Fstoppers with this video and instead of everyone focusing on the photography tips they went on a rant about the retouching (which isn't covered in this video). Its a delicate balance, but I'll definitely be considering it for my upcoming videos :)
Miguel Quiles fstoppers comments can be ignored from the start! :D keep up the good work
Fun point on point 5: ruclips.net/video/yiJ9fy1qSFI/видео.html
But yeah, if it is bad to start with, it is bad in the end.
Two funny thigns:
1. EXCALIBUR!!!
2. Bad colors? B&W, we've all done it.
caught me on the black and white part hahahaha
We've all been guilty of it! 😂✌️
@@MiguelQuilesJr i appreciate the response. learning a lot from you.! just begun my photography journey.
exactly caky makeups are dangerous
I would like to hear what you have to say, but the "music" is too damn distracting. When people talk to me in person, music never plays under their words. What's the point? And for those who might find music some sort of enhancement, isn't it arrogant to presume every one will like the music chosen by you?
+wetracy Sorry the music bothered you so much. I suppose if you want to hear my advice you could always do a paid session with me. I'd be happy to find the most quiet room in my house just for you. ;)
Miguel Quiles he can also turn off the sound and read the subtitles
Now that my friend is what you call being resourceful! Love it!
great video, please loose the music.
no offense but this is super generic info. a lot of these can be said about almost all photography... use the right lighting.. use the right lens... use the right settings... choose the right subject...
+P Lon No offense taken. The basics is usually where many photographers end up messing up. If you want more advanced stuff check out some of the other videos on my channel 😉✌️
Miguel Quiles but you also explain WHY you do what you do and that's the fantastic part.
I polish turds all the time. You really can these days.
Makeup is not skin. Makeup has no detail. That's makeups point: to not be skin, to not show detail.
