A friend of mine was at a difficult time when this song came out. It's open to interpretation but I assumed it was a song about suicide (" dark as I drove the point home " being slitting ones wrist) when someone is near the end. The power of these lyrics spoke to him. I believe The Smith's and their music played a part in helping him. This is up there in their top 5. The fade out fade in is powerful.
it was written in response to press jibes about Morrissey's sincerity re his outlook on life, and the content of his lyrics. The point being that he felt that people like your friend certainly should not be subject to anything but compassion and sympathy, whereas the press felt he was using such people as collateral. Great song, as you say. Glad it helped him.

Park the car at the side of The Road You should know Time's tide will smother you And I will too When you laugh about people who feel so very lonely Their only desire is to die Well I'm afraid It doesn't make me smile I wish I could laugh But that joke isn't funny anymore It's too close to home And it's too near the bone It's too close to home And it's too near the bone More than you'll ever know (Kick them when they fall down Kick them when they fall down You kick them when they fall down Kick them when they fall down You kick them when they fall down Kick them when they fall down You kick them when they fall down Kick them when they fall down( It was dark as I drove the point home And on cold leather seats Well, it suddenly struck me I just might die with a smile on my Face after all I've seen this happen in other people's lives And now it's happening in mine I've seen this happen in other people's lives And now it's happening in mine I've seen this happen in other people's lives And now it's happening in mine I've seen this happen in other people's lives And now it's happening in mine...
One of the greatest songs of ALL time
You know what? I think it is!
The melancholy is so powerful & mesmerizing on this one. One of my favorites from the Smiths!
Beautiful arrangement; guitars, all of it & that door opening at the end
Amazing song! Still sends a shiver through my body since I first heard this in the 1980's
This song is a proper bastard. Loved it when I was 15 and I thought it didn't apply to me.
duz' it now? r u still alive to read this???? if not, that's ok, yer' in da' ocean....... splash !!!! with or without foam?
Estou sem palavras, que música! ❤
It's 30 years ago the band split. They didn't excist that long but still lots of great songs like this one.
Definitely my favourite Smith's song
Though melancholy, this is truly my favorite song by these guys:)
Wish I could live in the last minute of this song
me too
I wish I could escape it...and find happiness
I did & still am or wouldn't be here
My favourite Smiths song [2]

now it's happen in mine
Park the car at the side of The Road
You should know
Time's tide will smother you
And I will too
When you laugh about people
who feel so very lonely
Their only desire is to die
Well I'm afraid
It doesn't make me smile
I wish I could laugh
But that joke isn't funny anymore
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
More than you'll ever know
(Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down(
It was dark as I drove the point home
And on cold leather seats
Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
Face after all
I've seen this happen
in other people's lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen
in other people's lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen
in other people's lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen
in other people's lives
And now it's happening in mine...
This song has something that.. I don't know. You understand, right?
Willy Dafoe no I don't, no idea what it's about. It stays with me, a sadness lifting maybe?. It's just a song...
Gary Withers It doesn't make me smile.
I understand!
Yes, i do understand.

They keep pulling these down - whoever's doing it, please stop!
Whoever is doing it is the people who own the copyright. They've got every right to remove it, to be fair.
Well said mate. People these days want to enjoy the artiste's work but without helping the artiste to make a living from it.
