You are awesome! I thought I was going to have my first Eggo-less breakfast in two years, but you saved the day! Thank you! 🤙

Same problem. My toaster was entirely different in its configuration, and really took some figuring in getting all the screws out, prying and pulling it apart, certain I'd dislodged a connection, bent some linkage or broken a wire somewhere. But after a thorough cleaning (there were enough crumbs in it to feed a hungry Hitchcock size flock of birds), got it back together... and viola! Works.
    Many thanks.

I got a chrome Smeg and 3 years exactly later the button does not stay down and I was prepared to go and buy a new one. God bless you for showing us how to repair it.

THANK YOU! you saved my Smeg. I couldn't get the little ball to detach from the lever but was able to open it up enough to clean it and - voila! So cool

Thank you for taking the time to post this. I was able to just knock the crumbs out before having to disassemble and it worked. Never thought there was a magnet catch in there let alone crumbs built up on top of it. Thanks again.

The old toasters had mechanical latch and timer, but nowadays all use electromagnetic latch and electronic timers. Smeg is no different, internally it is a cheap Chinese toaster just as what other brands offerings.

This is a great video. Thank you for that. It made fixing the toaster faster for me. There is one additional advice I can share with others. Make sure to have a sand paper or file to clean the contacts that engages when the lever is pushed down. That's where my problem was. Over time the arcing between the contacts causes carbon build up to the point little or no current passes through to engage the magnet. Remove the contact assembly by clipping the tie wrap and sliding it up before cleaning the contacts. Pu itt back when done. Don't need to replace the tie wrap. This should fix it. Good luck.

I saw 3 videos and r first I thought your video wouldn't work, but I was wrong. Your simple yet straightforward approach was the best. The crumbs affect the contact with the button sensor like you said. I used an inflator for blowing air and took away all the crumbs. Toaster works like new again. Thank you so much, you're a blessing!

Great video. Once I saw that the problem was likely crumbs in the catch mechanism, I just skipped taking it apart and just flipped the whole thing over, hit it a couple of times and shook out all the crumbs. Bam; fixed it.

Thank you!!!! As I was working with my toaster and it then like magic worked!!!!! I thought it was just like everything else, when it doesn’t work, unplug it, wait, plug it back in nd presto it reboots! So you can imagine as I got it all back together, screwed in all those screws… cleaned it outside, plugged it in and darn if the stupid thing didn’t work again. 🙁 So I am about to un-screw 12 screws, unplug the mother board, plug it back in, re-screw all those little screws. If it works I will know that you are a genius, if it doesn’t work then it’s just my bleepity bleep toaster and you are still a genius! 😁 Thank you for the video in all cases. 💕

4:08 the plastic pusher on the right is for engaging the power contacts, which are soldered directly to the PCB (not the best design in terms of engineering practices, but this is how cheap Chinese products are made nowadays). By closing the contacts, electric current starts flowing through the heating elements and the electromagnetic latch, which keeps the lever attached to it until the timer runs out and cuts off the magnet coil to release the lever back to its upper position, effectively stopping the heating process.
But please be careful, your hands were way too close to the exposed contacts, while the toaster was connected to mains.

I have a baby and a toddler so don’t have time to go through this now. As a last resort, I took it into the compost bin and shook out all the crumbs brought it back in and now it’s working. So just give it a try if you don’t have time to do the permanent fix!

Had same exact toaster with same exact problem. Awesome video helped make it an easy and quicker fix!! Used brush and electrical contact spray at the release mechanism area. Also, stubborn green gound wire can be removed carefully with a needle-nose pliers grabbing back of connector. Thanks Again

When I opened mine up I could see that something black was on the push down mechanism causing it to slip! Once I removed it with a Qtip voila! It hinged perfectly. I’m guessing it could have been chocolate from a chocolate chip bagel or even raisins from raisin bread??? Either way works just great now!

      It’s an electromagnet
It will not stay down if the magnet is dirty and if the toaster is not plugged in the electricity energizes the electromagnet it is tied in with the thermostat depending if you want the toaster lite or darker set that with the knob

I ended up throwing out my toaster. It smelled awful when I pulled down the lever to make toast, and I thought there must be a huge chunk of old burnt toast inside so I unplugged it to dislodge the bit of toast and discovered it wasn’t toast at all, but a small plastic hook which had been stuck to the wall near the toaster and it must have fallen in and got welded /melted onto the wire elements. It wouldn’t come off and every time I tried I realised the wires were all breaking up, so wouldn’t have been safe to use anymore. The moral is-keep the toaster away from anything that could fall into it and melt!

Thank you for the very useful fix. I have the same issue with Smeg toaster. After removing the case, I followed all the steps from brushing to cleaning all around the toaster body and the lever contacts then it worked while it was out of its case, but it didn't work when I put the case back on, I tried three times, the lever still does not engage when the case is on. Any idea what could be the problem. Thank you again.
