    But I also recommend this newer more rugged one www.gearbest.co...

    So I made a centrifugal fan.. And then built an airplane around it
    Bonus footage: • Video
    For clarification: I did not use the AC motor from the heater, but rather I put the impeller onto a much more powerful BLDC motor as commonly used in RC.

Like some kind of sucking flaps on the leading edge. Also wonder if something like it (smaller?) could be used on the main shaft of a heli with the ducted thrust used to replace the tail rotor.

      Both your ideas would work, and have been used in aircraft designs several times. The MD NOTAR System works a lot like that for lateral control (The actual torque compensation doesn't, though, only the rudder does.) and some STOL capable transport aircraft have their engines on their wings for that reason. Or think of the Honda Jet, or from back then, the VFW 614.

Reaction force of blown air is obvious to anyone who has ever used a gas backpack leaf blower, and equally obvious that it's terribly inefficient but that you could use it to power a plane if you did it well. Actually doing it is only a triviality, it was obvious from the moment of first using that type of leaf blower in the 80s. You're about 10 times better off to simply use the same motor/engine but put an actual prop on it..

    Well played sir, that is pretty ingenious. As with EDF's there are a few critical tolerances with regards to inlet and outlet size (and in your case impeller to case clearances), with some study, expirementation and refinement, I'm confident you could significantly increase the efficiency. Also the reason for pitch up under power is the thrust line(outlet) below the center of lift and gravity. If you flip your outlet to the top it would move them closet to one another and provide moving air across your tail surfaces.Keep up the innovating, now if you'll excuse me I must go strip the a/c blower out of my old car...

    That space in the blower is called a plenum. If you look that up you can dial in the most efficient shape, although you got pretty close it looks like. Squirl fans are very effient as fans go. Lot of advantages for not having a prop. Very durable and more placement options for the propulsion.

    • @fabiovezzari2895
      @fabiovezzari2895 6 лет назад

      I read that centrifugal fans on planes are efficient and powerful at low speeds, but also that they consume more energy from the batteries. Do you think it's true? I knew it from a guy on a forum and probably they are just intuitive considerations.

    • @bradyspace
      @bradyspace 6 лет назад +1

      The statements seem conflicting. It seems like there are tradeoffs like many other plane configurations. There are more blades and more surface area around the walls of these blowers vs a prop that is getting clean open air. However the blower with enclosed air can be compressed and further utilized. Similiarly at certain speeds jets become more efficient than props.

    The ram air intake needs to be more stream lined. I looked at this video a few times and taking screenshots of the ram air intake to get an idea of its size. It's huge lol !!! Crunching the numbers show the intake is way way to big and actually air is backed up. You need to streamline the intake duck and make it more like an oval shape instead of a scoop which is causing drag.

    Awesome work. Question about the Giro you used on the helicopter. I have no experience with this stuff so excuse the ignorance. It is physically stuck to the plane and just dampens its movements making it smoother? or somehow just reading the movements and building into the servos for controlling it?

    I would change a few things.
    Your wing incidence ratio is way off. Make it closer to the tail AoA.
    Your ability to make exhaust velocity is not being taken advantage of. You need to narrow the outlet which would raise the air speed coming out of the exhaust.
    Treat it just like an EDF. Widen the exhaust outlet and you increase traction but decrease speed. Narrow the outlet and you decrease traction and increase speed.

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  8 лет назад +18

      +MikeSVOR I agree with you. The angle of incidence is a bit high, resulting in a little bit of a nose low cruising attitude. The decalage is also a bit high, resulting in an inherently stable, but slow trimmed condition and excess elevator drag at higher speeds.
      When I experimented with narrowing the discharge nozzle, I found that it was not able to pump as much air, and would not consume as much power. Though I did not try to measure the thrust in this condition, it felt to me like there was less.
      I am interested in asking engineering professors at my school when I get back about what centrifugal pump design would be best for thrust. And I would like to model and 3D print a much more complex one which I imagine will resemble something like a turbocharger.

    Great work and video but you're missing a trick! Mounting the fan such that the output passes over the top of the wings will increase lift allowing the fast air to achieve BOTH lift AND thrust. The same principle all prop planes have used for many years especially with above wing engines.
    Problems/issues:
    CoG will be affected with more mass further forward so fundamental design may need to be altered
    For best lift, separation of two blowers would be better, one for each side of the aircraft
    The size of the blowers ahead of the wing may increase drag more than the benefit of extra lift achieved - alternate positioning/orientation?
    Be interesting to see how different layouts compare.

    I wonder if rotating the blower 180 degrees to blow across the top of the wings would create more lift...
    Basic aerodyamics, air moving faster across a surface creates less pressure on that surface than air moving slower on another. Wings are curved just to create a longer distance, and thus faster velocity of the air moving across.
    Mount the blower to blow out above the wings, and I'd hazzard to guess you'd get measurable lift, even without any forward movement (like the test blocked against the wall.)

      +Dan O'Connell Wouldn't you want the air on the under side of the wing to move faster to create more lift?

      ***** Faster moving air causes lower pressure. So if you had less pressure below the wings, there would be less air pushing it upwards compared to the pressure on top of the wing pushing it downwards.
      That is why wings are shaped with humps on top because this weird phenomena that I don't understand: air moving from below and above the wing must reach the end of the wing at the same time. So having a longer distance to travel on the top of the wing (with that hump) means the air has to travel faster, creating lower pressure.

      Soccerrockker6 Yes, that sounds right. The idea is to create lower pressure on upper side and higher pressure at the under side. We wanna go up.

      "air moving from below and above the wing must reach the end of the wing at the same time" - False, but a commonly held misconception. Lift is caused by the pressure differential between above and below the wing, but there is no law to say that airflow must meet at the other end. The incidence causes lift by curvature of the airflow. See experiments on youtube with pulses of smoke moving over a wing. They do not meet!

    Very impressive! You thought up a completely new propulsion engine, built a working model, and it worked! You have reinvigorated my hope for the future at the hands of the current popular culture. God Bless, good luck and keep engineering!

    Hi Samm, Not sure if you still have this plane, but if you do, this may sound a little counter intuitive, but reverse the blower so that the veins are facing in the direction of rotation. The way you had it first but said it was wrong. You will draw more current, but you should also have a LOT more output as well because the centrifugal force will be forcing the air to follow the veins and make it accelerate faster just as a water pump works. All the best and keep on doing mad science!

      He used the correct rotation for the design of the fan (backward inclined blades). A forward curved fan will do as you note, but the design of the fan is different, with different sized blades, number of blades and shape of blades. For an 'off the shelf ' project, he did a pretty passable job.
      And, as a side note, this had been done before, in UK and the US, with a small combustion engine powered fan and a similar construction.....no RC, just free flight.
      The fan technology is out there to be investigated, with probably significant performance improvement, but it's not the most efficient way to power a model (and, no, it is NOT a ducted fan, in the sense that the term is used today...it's a centrifugal fan in a housing, with no actual ducting).
      Conventional bladed propellors are a very effective way to translate power into thrust, with the operating envelope of 'slower' airplanes. Centrifugal fans/blowers are most effective at delivering air against pressure resistance, e.g., air delivery systems for heating, cooling and exhausting. Props are more effective in moving air in 'free air' systems.
      End of lesson!
