      That's actually a very good definition of evolution. If the new prototype break, it dies and don't procreate. That's why this one is deemed "perfect" ; 300 million years and still nothing that surpasses the original design.

    The hagfish hasn't evolved to be a hunter for two main reasons.
    1. They don't need to eat much at all. A small meal can last them weeks
    2. The slime they excrete as a defense mechanism is literally so perfect that they have no natural predators. It clogs up the fish's mouth and gills so they quite literally suffocate. They're super effectient animals.

      If the allele frequency’s for a certain mutation increases in a more favourable environment it’s way more likely to to survive and reproduce increasing the gene pool the reason they haven’t changed is because the it’s genes are already very effective so the mutations that do happen just get lost as reproduction is not efficient

    As a biology degree holder, it’s pretty neat seeing animals who haven’t been selected against at all for extended periods of time. Population dynamics can be affected by different alleles for a number of reasons, so it’s pretty interesting that it’s basically just chillin’ for thousands of years.

    • @karma.suture
      @karma.suture 2 года назад +60

      @@Knights_of_the_Nine That’s a good question; I’m a bachelor’s degree holder, not PhD, so the best answer I can give you is that evolution isn’t a tool for survival, but a mechanism of circumstances.
      For example, genetic drift can occur due to natural disasters, and can change the allele frequency of a population; one of the more interesting examples similar to what you’re asking is how the peppered moth population changed from predominantly gray phenotypes to be camouflage with the trees to being mostly dark after the industrial revolution introduced pollution that made lighter moths easier to spot by predators. The moths didn’t just _choose_ to start having different colored offspring because their population was declining; both phenotypes existed, and pollution made the darker ones camouflaged and the lighter ones stand out. The genes need to exist for selection to happen. I think that’s the underlying question you’re asking, but if I’m wrong feel free to ask more questions. I’m at work, so I’ll respond when I can.

    Hey Charlie, I wanted to explain why this creature is seen as evolutionarily complete. Basically, this creature has become so efficient in surviving in its environment that no mutation over the last 300 million years has given that creature a significant enough advantage for It to have propagated its Gene line more successfully and/or rapidly than any other creature of its species. It has no reason to change because it is essentially perfect for its location. Evolution is based on random changes that occur over an incredibly long period of time, and sometimes those mutations happen to create an organism that has a new advantage in its specific environment, and when that happens that creature is therefore able to become more successful in terms of survival in general, and that allows it to spread its genetic material to the next generation more successfully, therefore making that new mutation standard for the future generations. This then compounds for the next hundreds of thousands or millions or tens of millions or hundreds of millions of years, and becomes drastic changes rather than small advantages. However, since this creature is already incredibly streamlined for its environment, no mutation over the past 300 million years has given any significant advantage that would then therefore become the new baseline, and so that's why it hasn't noticeably changed in 300 million years. Also when it comes to living in an environment that has very few resources in terms of food, it is often more advantageous for organisms to develop ways to survive for long periods of times without food rather than attempting to spend extreme amounts of energy hunting for food that isn't there in the first place. It's essentially why cacti have evolved to grow their roots close to the surface and in a sort of upside-down umbrella formation to gather as much water as possible and store as much water as possible from the surface when it does rain rather than growing it's roots far underground or far away for water or nutrients considering that the desert has very little groundwater and nutrients to look for in the first place. It is just more advantageous to stay in place and conserve energy and just wait for the next meal rather than use all your energy at once just for a small chance of finding something.
    This is a pretty simplified explanation of evolution however, as things do not necessarily "want" to evolve, they just do. It is completely random, but it is easier to explain if I use personification.

Another is through DNA analysis, looking at what has changed and what did not. Then there how simple it is. It has a skull but no spine, no eyelids it’s organs and so on.

    Just a quick lesson in marine biology and evolution for you guys:
    Despite it's (and yes I do agree on that front) revolting characteristics, the hagfish is seen as a pinnacle of evolution, because no characteristics developed through evolution over the 300,000,000 years that it has existed has proved sufficient enough to rival the characteristics it already employs to survive. In short, from its introduction it was so well suited to its conditions no change in its biology, i.e., no alteration in the gene pool of the hagfish has been significant enough that marine biologists have deemed said change as a "revolutionary improvement in its ability to survive in it's environment." That's why it is a biological marvel. The slime still grosses me out though.

    it's "perfectly evolved" because if it hasnt evolved in a shit tonne of time that means there was no need to evolve and yet it still lives well so therefore its superior of its kind, and possibly near perfect in every conceivable way for its environment - i.e it'd be impossible to design it better
