Airbending has the Spirit variant. It's based on real world philosophy - ancient romans believed in 'pneuma' or 'breath of life.' That concept is where words like pneumatic machinery comes from, machines that animate through air power. In the Bending universe, some rare airbenders can manipulate a person's spirit but it's on the same level of taboo as bloodbending.
@@gadgetselec4153 I think he originally meant to say airbending also has spirit projection, like what Jinora does, but I don’t know about manipulating other people’s spirit.
More reason as to why the campaign against the air Nomads and the falsely named "genocide" of the airbenders was a justified endeavor to protect the people of all nations from the threat of a sect of benders where a single man could exterminate hundreds
I like how sozin said in this live series that "on any other day you would win, but not today." I think people underestimate air cause their pacifists and they were essentially wiped out in the story line but sozin had to wait to ambush them and needed the help of the comet to ensure a win over them.
well, all 4 temples' monks/nuns are here for the festival, and they had the homefield advantage of the air temple being hard to get to in general. so sozin was basically attacking all the air nomads with limited forces as only skilled fire benders can reach the air temples (as they didn't have war balloons yet).

This was a hard scene to watch. Evidently, the TV series will expand on many aspects that the animated TV show wasn't able to for obvious reasons. I know the animated TV show alluded to the sheer cruelty and brutality of the Fire Nation.
They put up one hell of a fight given the circumstances and the fact they had no army nor military training, and were faced against comet powered fire benders. On a regular night I doubt they would’ve even come close to winning against these masters.
"Question 1: What year did Fire Lord Sozin battle the Air Narion army?" "Was that a trick question? The Air Nomads didn't have a formal military. Sozin defeated them by ambush"
This scene is truly heartbreaking to watch and is also sinister and creepy, as we finally get to see the brutality, heartlessness, and fanaticism that shaped Fire Lord Sozin.
The most F´ed up part is when he brings up the "night" part, as in the comet Amp was so powerful that night nerfed Firebenders were basically on enough to steroids to overwhelm anyother bender during the time very easily!
This scene was amazing! Though I wished that Gyatso fought sozin for a little longer and have a whole fight sequence but since Sozin’s Comet was there it made sense
I loved the way they changed it up. Hit me hard too. I thought episode 1 was good thanks to this but then episodes 2, 3 were a letdown and couldnt keep up the quality
Well you have to remember that the soldiers are just average fire benders fighting against masters. Notice Sozin (a master fire bender) had no problem taking out master Air benders.
@@syzorst Also they had the small but ultimately insignificant advantage of it being night time, if it was day time on Ozai´s reign´s comet day, it would´ve been way way easier for the firebenders.
@@gachagamer536well yeah, but still he defeated the master airbenders easily because he had the comet, which means he wouldn’t have won so easily or not at all. Look at how long it took for him to kill Gyatso.
Woah. All-out. Of course they couldn't depict the genocide onscreen before but this is just whoa. The next level. Sozin said no survivors and they did it. Ended them all. As for holding back, they were close to each other so any giant house sized blasts would cause friendly fire and any distant blast plan would not kill as much Air Nomads. They had to get upclose and personal.
The Netflix version proved that the world was lucky that the Airbenders were peace-loving nomads, because if they weren't they would have conquered the world. Airbending is so strong and versatile in the live-action series.
The Air nomads are not that strong to conquer the world dude. What makes the Fire Nation so powerful was not only the firebenders but they also had the strongest military. The Air Nomads are just monks. They do not have the military might or numbers for world domination.
@@syzorst However, Zaheer proved that if they wanted to, they could have gone far in terms of Lethality, they could have become the equivalent of the Tibetan Empire.
So there is a difference between the cartoon and the live-action in that with the OG cartoon series Sozin wanted to ERASE the air benders and their culture along with killing the avatar (the sky bison could teach air bending, so they had to go as well). The live-action Sozin just wanted to kill the avatar (like even his general said there was no strategic reason for wasting the comet on the air nation)
@@noahtek1101I could kind of see how it could make sense. Most of them would have been massacred, but perhaps some were captured rather than being murdered on the spot. Some fire nation nobles could have bought them or acquired them somehow before they died, and bred them as something like exotic pets.
Watching this in kid shows might've been heartbreaking. This series is as powerful as what we adults have experienced to imagine ourselves in this moment.
This made me connect more to the pain of Ang than the anime or the movie back then did. Much more details. They made me realize how human the air masters were
Ever imagine the amount of fire korra has produced against Vaatu while using jet propulsion or how she sways away fire blasts like curtains in the windows. She would never let this mess happen. She mastered 3 elements before she reached 12
What I like during this scene is that it alludes to the fact that Fire isn't purely based on someone's willpower alone; if you create a tornado, you are essentially GIVING a Firebender MORE AIR to IGNITE. Air can be ignited via oxygen, and a Firebender could easily do that with the spark from their finger, for example. This is also why Firebenders and Airbenders specifially aren't that different, as they have to be more creative with their talents than Waterbenders or Earthbenders, since the latter two are more based on setting than skill alone.
I don't know why but Order 66 from Star Wars just kept popping in my head as I saw this entire sequence, the massacre of the air benders just felt similar to the Jedi Purge.
We only saw the Air Temples on fire and the aftermath in the cartoon. The live action series showed the Fire Nation attack on the Air Nomads in all of its glory.
Note: original canon references say that some novice air temple monks escaped this chaos, some slipping away during the attack and some witnessing the attack and turning away from the temples because in the Lost adventure TPB ( dark horse/ Nickelodeon publishing ) Zhao admitted “ some monks did escape this attack “ also there were rouge monks who were noted in the 2005 AtlA quick strike TCG card set who assisted Sozin in his attacks ( via detailed information about the temples ie. layout etc. even as short as opening the front doors for his forces) lastly if you use series 2 canon it’s recessed genetics that after harmonic convergence that leads to future air bending resurgence, so this scene is not showing 100% of the facts , just the common perception that was noted back at the start of the series….Just saying is all …because I make sure to check all the facts.?!?
well yeah, it was impossible to take all the monks in one go, not only they are split in 4 temples around the world, many are living on other nations, Fire nations spend decades hunting the survivors, using traps and baits. also a common theory is that many monks survive and go in hide, the "new airbenders" we meet in Korra are probable descendents of tose monks
@@rafaelsantos-nl9jd thanks for your understanding, it's good to know that some know about these things that have been officially peppered into the canon as hidden hints...thank you...
If I recall correctly, there is also a fan theory that Ty Lee is a descendant of Airbenders/Airbender Monks, since she shares many of the same traits as they do (free flowing, athletic, acrobatic, very friendly and approachable, etc) It’s a bit of a stretch since it’s stated she comes from a noble family, but it isn’t impossible either.
not to mention the air benders and their descendants who weren't at or a part of the air temples. According to the novels released, there are air benders who are banished, air benders who aren't a part of the air nomad nation (born and grew up outside the air temples) like amihan, and air benders who became disillusioned with the air nomad ways and left the air temples like kyoshi's mom.
This one Mimor Flaw: i was a bitvdisappointed that a) the comet didn't light up the sky as it did in the Show and b) that the firebending enhanced by the comet only looks Slightly more powerful while in the Show it was IMMENSLY (In power and visuals) But nonetheless i loved to see Sozin in Action!
Realistically it's impossible for a comet to get close enough to the surface to light up the sky and not get pulled in by the Earth's gravity and crash. And I think the firebenders had to restrain themselves a bit in order to not accidentally BBQ each other while fighting the Airbenders.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl I think they wanted to portray that the monks were the better benders and fighters but were overpowerd by the power of the comet. + 1 sided fight scenes are boring to watch.

Interesting that they made Sozin participate the genocide when in the cartoon, he only said that he had the Air Nomads wiped out, not going into specific on whether or not he actually joined the slaughter. The fact that not only did he do it, but he was the one that personally killed Gyasto, a close friend of Roku, is mind blowing. Two of Roku’ greatest friend, and one of them killed both. I don’t think Sozin even knew of Roku’s friendship with Gyasto. I don’t know if it’s the intention in both the original creators of the cartoon show and the new director of the live action for this to be canon in the cartoon show as well.
Yes! Aang is now smiling in the new live action Avatar The Last Airbender series however unlike 2010 Aang, he never smile or joke in this movie which came out in 2010.
could have been even better if there was a comet visible and its light all over the place. also, it's shown that gyatso went down without a chance but in the animation we saw that he took quite a lot firebenders with him without getting scorched suggesting that he used an air sucking forbidden technique. it would be cool if this scene or something similar was depicted.
Yeah, it was a bummer, but I think they just wanted to show how evil Sozin really was (which I get because that creates a lineage to show how evil Azulon and then Ozai are.). Also the comet is visible
In the show it was heavily implied that Gyatso killed a room full of firebenders along with himself by removing the air from the room. Wish we got to see that here
Sozin: execute order sixty seven Azulon: yes my lord (The fire benders dancing) Sozin: no no execute order sixty six (Is it me or every fire bender has a z in their name)
They really did incorporate proper martial art techniques. Air benders use the art of Baguazhang. None combative and disarming and mostly used to go behind and around the opponents instead of directly in front of them.
He did it, look at the scene when he faces all those firebenders. Gyatzo was sucking the air to suffocate them (in fact those firebenders are dead), 2:28 but Sozin managed to hold his breath and cover himself with a blanket of fire and then break Gyatzo's stance.
@falcongrey8891 no he didn't. He's created a barrier of air. Like a heavy winds in a rain storm and a high pressure system constantly push them back. I'm not even sure if your eyes work my guy.
Couldnt have Sozin killed those soldiers as collateral to guarantee Gyatzo and the kids died by cooking up everything in that room with his comet Amped flames? Seems like something a Evil Monster like Sozin would do rather than seeing Gyatzo kill people through suffocation, case he no Zaheer.
I like this because it shows how powerful the Air Nomads were. If they were given a notice and were ready to prepare I think they would have been able to fend off the Fire Nation.
No they wouldn't. Against comet enhanced firebenders, they had no chance even if they were prepared. Their only hope of survival was to escape before the attack began.
@@syzorst mas o próprio Sozin dizendo que tinha que feito um plano pra pegar eles de surpresa, dá a entender que se eles fossem avisados, poderiam dar muito mais trabalho, pois assim eles se preparariam mais.
WTF are you all smoking? If they were given a notice beforehand the teenagers would´ve ran with the kids and the airbender masters would probably stay behind to hold off the firebenders, but the position of the temple was bad, meaning they´d have to ran away on bisons while a army of fire propelled fire nation soldiers was after them, fortunately this was before the generation of lightning was a thing so they could survive.
Say what you want about this series. Unlike the cartoon, this one shows the final moments and last stand of the airbenders. And it perfectly shows if Aang haven’t left his home, he would’ve died as well.
People still believe from the Ozai fight that Aang could´ve won this with the avatar state and spirit help, but nope he wouldnt have, Ozai fought him 1 on 1, Sozin came with a firebender army to gang up on him, all enhanced with the comet, there´s actually the risk that the past avatars hubris may have actually gotten Aang killed in the avatar state had he not run away as sozin would gladly sacrifice a few soldiers to guarantee Aang died.
@@ttschannel875 Wouldnt matter, because now there´s no Airbender master to teach air, even with Legend of Korra logic, any surviving waterbending avatar wouldnt have lived long enough for a chance to revive airbending as they would´ve to live hundreds of years, and without being able to use all 4 elements, the Avatar state doesnt work as intended, at best it´s a reckless force of nature, or at worse just a meditating sitting duck begging to be targetted with lightning. So yeah Fire nation wouldnt need to bother after disposing of Aang with no airbenders left any avatar afterwards WILL NEVER MASTER THE AVATAR STATE and risks ending the cycle entirely by using it, or risking their own allies in wrath, by that point the Firelord can just wait for another comet to wipe out the water tribe then another to wipe out the earth nation and boom, world domination complete.
@@sebas8225 100 year is a long cooldown. By that time the spirit vine weapon already been discovered.metal bender also been well know. Blood bending? Maybe. Relaying on comet alone won't be enough. That's why the need to win as soon as possible

Like the firebender in the cycle finally dies and there are no airbenders to reincarnate into so a scenario like Harmonic convergence happens and a potential airbender nonbender just gets it unlocked and becomes avatar? Could be a interesting possibility actually.
Those monks are quite strong and talented to contend with comet enhanced firebenders, even if each one lasted a few moments rather than instantly dying.

Gotta admit that showing the Fall of the Air Nomads and how others died by Firebenders hands was a good touch, because it shows how merciless the Fire Nation is
okay why don't I see anyone comment about the kids and gyatso, Gyatso sacrficed his life to protect those kids and succeeded but also failed when sozin came imagine what the kids felt knowing that this was their last time seeing each other and breathing
This was a pretty emotional scene for me. Growing up watching avatar, never thought I'd see the air temple destruction in live action like this and aangs teachers death
Well looking back on this when everybody literally said that Aang turned his back on the world. I will say he would’ve been very unprepared for this. In his defense even if he was sent away, they still would be unprepared. Considering the reason he actually took off as well Katara making a clear understanding that all this him running away was meant to be. I can definitely understand. Yeah there’s no way in hell Aang would have been able to stop this.
They didn’t show this in the show and I appreciate them showing us in this show. We needed to see this, it’s the truth of the matter no matter how brutal, sad, or raw it may be. The truth prevails
I had always thought the Air Nomads would run, but they stood and fought like Warriors! If not for the comet they would have won this, without a doubt. Air is clearly Fires weakness

I like how sozin said in this live series that "on any other day you would win, but not today." I think people underestimate air cause their pacifists and they were essentially wiped out in the story line but sozin had to wait to ambush them and needed the help of the comet to ensure a win over them.
It was because of the attack on the Southern Air Temple that the comet became known as Sozin's Comet.
well, all 4 temples' monks/nuns are here for the festival, and they had the homefield advantage of the air temple being hard to get to in general. so sozin was basically attacking all the air nomads with limited forces as only skilled fire benders can reach the air temples (as they didn't have war balloons yet).
I have to say, even though many people compare this to the infamous "order 66", this scene was way more brutal.

Them Air Masters were no jokes, one could take on ten soldiers, even when taken by surprise.

Well you have to remember that the soldiers are just average fire benders fighting against masters. Notice Sozin (a master fire bender) had no problem taking out master Air benders.

Woah.

This shows just how powerful an air bender can be…the fire nation needed a big time boost from a commit for this to succeed
Most brutal scene so far
"Fire Lord Sozin. The time has come. Execute Order 66."
I don't know why but Order 66 from Star Wars just kept popping in my head as I saw this entire sequence, the massacre of the air benders just felt similar to the Jedi Purge.
Because both are genocides.
This is without a doubt what I liked most about Live Action, that they will show how the airbenders fell but not without a fight.
"Can we have March on the Jedi temple?"
"We have March on the Jedi temple at home."
We only saw the Air Temples on fire and the aftermath in the cartoon. The live action series showed the Fire Nation attack on the Air Nomads in all of its glory.
im glad that the airbenders held their own for some time at least
If I recall correctly, there is also a fan theory that Ty Lee is a descendant of Airbenders/Airbender Monks, since she shares many of the same traits as they do (free flowing, athletic, acrobatic, very friendly and approachable, etc)
It’s a bit of a stretch since it’s stated she comes from a noble family, but it isn’t impossible either.
not to mention the air benders and their descendants who weren't at or a part of the air temples. According to the novels released, there are air benders who are banished, air benders who aren't a part of the air nomad nation (born and grew up outside the air temples) like amihan, and air benders who became disillusioned with the air nomad ways and left the air temples like kyoshi's mom.
Master Skywalker, there are too many of them. What are we going to do?

But nonetheless i loved to see Sozin in Action!
Realistically it's impossible for a comet to get close enough to the surface to light up the sky and not get pulled in by the Earth's gravity and crash. And I think the firebenders had to restrain themselves a bit in order to not accidentally BBQ each other while fighting the Airbenders.
