  • Millions of people (including me) know Pokemon is a fun game. However, I wanted to do a deeper dive to understand WHY it is so fun to play. My goal is to learn the true essence of what makes Pokemon so great (even after 30 years) and hopefully infuse that into my own RPG I'm developing.
What is your favorite game or best memory of game that you believe made it fun for you?

Cool style of video! I'll be honest, I wasn't a pokemon guy (played a similar game called Fossil Fighters) but you illustrated the fun of it very well. Being able to "tell your own story" through your team and how you play is definitely a key factor in making the game fun/replayable. That's one thing I like about Stardew Valley as well, how you can choose who you interact/develop relationships with. Good stuff :)

Surprisingly, it was quite entertaining to watch, as the way you explain it is quite technical. Maybe you should consider becoming a reviewer haha.
Now, personally, I would put "player choice" in the first place. For me, that was the innovative element in Pokémon games, especially when compared to any RPG or turn-based game from the 90s. Considering that there were 150 Pokémon, it gave the player a ridiculous amount of possibilities to choose from and play in their own style.

I also love pokemon games. Especially the first ones I played on Gameboys. The downside of those games was that they were mostly too easy at points, sometimes too combat heavy when going through the land fighting random pokemon, the leveling of each pokemon in your roster was quite tiring as only your first pokemon got the exp, so you had to switch them in the first round but they fixed some of it in the latest nintendo game by not fighting but using the pokebal throw from Pokemon GO to catch wild pokemon and the entire roster gets the experience, so they level up a lot faster.
What I didn't like too much is the combat system. Mainly due to big simplicity and imbalance, where non damaging skills were mostly useless (except confusion). Why would you do Tail Whip to lower enemy defense when you can do tackle and kill the enemy a lot faster and get hit a lot less... Not sure if this was addressed in the newest pokemon as I don't have the switch yet.
But in general, simple, yet great games :) My daughter also loves them.

All good points!!! I guess there can never be a "perfect" game for everyone but Pokemon comes pretty close.

It might be my device, but it was a bit difficult hearing you over the games' audio.
