I like the idea of having a crosscut sled that doesn't rely on the miter tracks, cuz my no name brand saw has sub-standard tracks and I can't use them. Also, your guide rail system might come in handy when I upgrade my main fence, where I can see just one fence and it rides along (left-right/side to side) guide rails using wheels set like this.

Nice twist, Michael. I like the fact that you've circumvented all the pain of fitting runners into slots, and practically eliminated all friction. Which is more than I can say about my own sled. While operating a table saw from the side is a wise safety measure, I see no need to do so when working with a sled. If you place your workpiece where it belongs, that is (which is up against the rear fence, not the front fence). That would also eliminate the need for the front blade guard. You may be able to add a stop pin of some sort to avoid using clamps for that. And I hope you squared that back fence up off-camera ;-) But all in all a good show (although I'll admit I did fast forward a bit :-).

Good use of the closet door rollers! Now I know what I'm going to do with the rollers on the closet doors I picked up a couple weeks back. I also made a workbench today, then I happened on this video. I will have to make a similar set up. Thanks for the video and don't worry about all the negativity of some people ,you learn by doing not yapping your mouth.

I could have made those two plywood struts in a fraction of the time and with a fraction of the effort, and they would have been perfectly square and a lot neater. Such a long journey. While the end result is admirable, I must admit I was expecting something more for such a long trip down the garden path.

By sight I made a copy of your idea and used it to make my version of a sled. I made all my corners completely round so the head and foot boards look like wooden hotdogs. I don't shop at big box stores and my mom and pop shop didn't have the wheels you used so I made due with ball bearings and 1/4" bolts but it makes it easy to adjust sizes to repair any imperfections on my 90 degree angles on the front board. it was only off by 0.006 but even that minute imperfection could be fixed before I sawed out the line for the blade curf. your idea of the rails on the table instead of the sled is great. before I hade washers as wheels but the wheels were on the sled and they rode on the ends of the board and the table so even though it was a smooth glide and it worked OK I had to go by what the miter slide told me was a perfect right angle but it was off by 2 degrees and I know that's not much, but when you have to make the angles on anything with more than two angles it showed in the final product. with adjustable wheels and rails I could fix it before putting and good wood on to the table and that saves me money and time not having to make it over again. THANX for the idea:

I love the sled idea that you have come up with using the sliding wheels that makes a lot of sense I have been working on something along the same lines but yours is better than mine but having your saw off to the right of the table I find a little awkward I like the concept of all the items on table but I will have to look at rearranging them to suit myself and Dad.
I have just finished making two mini sleds for Dads triton bench but I am going to dump the bench and rebuild something bigger and a lot more stabler than the triton bench I hate it as everything is all the wrong way for me okay if your a left handed but I am right handed and as such it's a pain to use as is since making my two mini sleds that has made using it so much easier😹😹😹
Thanks for the idea of the bench and the sled you made to go with it 🤗🤗

It might have worked better if the saw were mounted to the other end of the table, then you could stand between the rails. Push/pulling the sled gives you better control vs side slide which tends to rack/bind the sled. Another problem is the stock has no back up as the blade enters for the cut. Unless you counter this force you risk stock movement. With the fence behind the stock the sock is supported through the entire cut. Think of cutting lets say a 6 in X 6 in square in half. I doubt you would want to be standing on the far side of the sled with your hand trying to keep the blade from pushing the stock away from the fence. But you could do it safely if the fence was supporting the stock through the cut. Just a thought for safety sake. Thanks for sharing your hard work both on the project and the making of the video.

I noticed that and another issue is the guides being held with 1 screw each.. that system is easy to knock off kilter. its a great idea with a lot of set up for each use. with his all in one table I would set up the sled with the rails and make brackets for the guides on the table. or, to eliminate sawdust buildup under the table, replace with phenolic and make the sled guides just slip fit into the brackets. if you add holes for the suds collection to the top its almost perfect

I like the overall idea, it obviously works for you at the moment but I wonder how well it will work after a bit of use. Actually, I wonder how well it would work from day one. The general concept is good but I think a little more planning would have been beneficial. First of all a pine track, really? You might as well use balsa wood or cardboard for that matter. Also, I didn't see you square up the fences during the build and I can't see that you built in an adjustment system, these are both things that make all your work a waste of time. I can see that you're no schmuck around the workshop so I'm a little surprised that your design was as flawed as it is. I enjoyed your video nonetheless.

In theory, I think this starts off clever, but I'm afraid it won't hold up over time. If the board is trying to run only on the rollers and isn't making solid contact with the table, what's to prevent warp issues from causing binding? (Perhaps this was addressed in a section of the video I skipped, but I can't imagine how this issue would be accounted for). If the board warps, this could become dangerous. And standing at the side of the table means you're introducing the stock to the blade with uneven pressure and (potentially) less control. This could become dangerous!
It's a creative project, but a traditional table sled will last much longer, and is much safer.
(In your next project, be sure to use proper wood glue, not craft glue)

  • @Tensquaremetreworkshop
    @Tensquaremetreworkshop 8 лет назад +1

Ok- how to save 50 - 70% of the time to make.
-do not route right around the end plates- only the part that meets the base is critical. Just saw/jigsaw the rest. And ditch the template.
-cut both endplates together- halves the time
This whole project depends on the timber guide rails being straight, parallel and true- and staying that way. Good luck with that.
Leaving the guide rails on increases the size of the table (from a storage/space POV) considerably. I would just have a larger table! Taking them off when not it use would be v tedious.
Better to fit T guide into the table. Accurate, warp free, can also be used for clamping, guides, etc.

awesome design. don't listen to the f-tards. i'm working on something similar except with v track. the only thing i would change with yours is putting metal plate over the wood where the rollers contact. Also, the screen door wheels will be fine in controlling all of the degrees of freedom except for the wheels supporting the downward force of the sled. i would use something a little more sturdy. You may want to look at garage door wheels/rollers. looks like it slides smooth as silk. that's what im trying to accomplish. nice work

Please tell me about the built-in jig saw table. How is that constructed? Do you have a video on that? Thanks.

Thanks. One more question. Is the blade stable when cutting somewhat tight curves? In other words, does it stay perpendicular to the table in these situations? Thanks. Nice work, by the way.

Okay but i have serious doubts about it's accuracy . Juat how square does it actually cut ?

I had them wheel on an Ice Cream cooler and they get of dirt and wore out and replacing them to ball bearing don't help neither due to keep them lubed and on wood would be even worse :(. try metal on metal slider ,,,like and female tracks?

Also, why would any one make accurate marks only to make hand drawn lines, and cut same, that are as curly as a pig's tail.

      Pigs have no tail

I have a question, is that the same circular saw you are using from the first time you made the Table bench, the blade looks bigger to me... Nice videos..

Penso che sia molto laborioso. Secondo me si può realizzare in maniera più semplice. Ciao.

That was a lot of material & time to use just one perfect saw blade for the correct kerf cut, which was your best choice?

I've chosen the biggest suitable for my 200mm circular saw so it was IRWIN 210mm 40T blade. www.bunnings.com.au/irwin-210mm-40t-marathon-circular-saw-blade_p6370772

You really need to do your layouts with a square. Faster and more accurate.

wouldn't those plastic wheels wear out and throw your off straight passes after a while?

I'm 1/3 of the way through the video and where you're going with this is still a mystery to me. Key words in the title got me...but why not talk through the process or insert onscreen text instead of a music-only soundtrack that adds zero? You haven't shown me a worthwhile thing...sorry, you did...I like the jigsaw in the table concept.

I would love to see a video on how you made the table..... How did you get the jig saw underneath to raise up and down?

The description says "full process how I built 3 in 1 workbench from simple table and some handguided tools" yet all I saw was building a sled. Where is that video ?
The sled seems way over complicated, though I bet it slides & works great based on those rollers and the use of good ply.
