    Great vid Gareth, there are some fantastic fish in there this winter. It was cool to see how well you two work together on the river and really nice to meet you, like I said you guys have been my inspiration to fish more around Taupo 🤙

      I know people like to call big lake dwelling trout "steelhead"but damn it it's not a steelhead if it hasn't touched the salt. Stop falsely consoling yourselves that you caught a "steelhead"and just appreciate the fact they are big beautiful rainbow trout!

    Love the videos! I could be way off but I've seen in a few videos you are fishing your nymphs pretty deep. What is the average depth of water you fish and what length do you put between flies and indicator? Forgive me if you've already answered this in one of your videos.

    Haha im glad im not the only one to wimp out on that crossing! I gutted a 6lb hen with a huge guts that was full of big crunchy lumps after you mentioned they could be koura, but they were pieces of pumice about 20cent coin size.
    She was very red fleshed though, so i assume she ate pumice instead of koura while in the hine?

      Koura is Maori name for freshwater crayfish. Native freshwater lobster species in New Zealand lakes and rivers

    Is the Hinemaiaia open above the road bridge all year round?

      Yes and No, you can fish all year round up to half way between the bridge and the dam. The upper reaches from halfway point (Marked with sign posts) to the dam, can only be fished from 1 Dec - 31 May.

      Heaps of the spot x and a few others say that... real confusing for people new to the area. Your allowed from the mouth up to the sign marked spot about halfway up ( past the highway bridge)

      Yes. Fly and "regular fishing" have the same season. There are area's which are restricted to fly fishing only though.

      Totally missing the point. You can catch fish, and even see and take a pic (underwater GoPro style), without risking the fishes life. That way someone else can catch it again.

      You can keep up to 6 trout per day but they must exceed 35 cm in length measured from tip of the nose to the dip in the fork of the tail. These guys believe in conserving the fish. Its debatable whether conservation is needed in these Taupo rivers which carry huge numbers of trout, but extra care is required on many remote wilderness rivers.

      Yeah as melstar says. Heaps of trout in there and more probably need to be taken but I prefer not to kill fish I just like catching em. And it helps that I am an angel

    you fly guys kill me with your 8 ft leads in a 5 ft hole. theres a reason you edited taking the hooks out. ridiculous

      There actually 12 ft leaders. But the indicator is set a little deeper the the depth fished.
      The hook removed is edited out because it’s a bit boring and rearly in frame. Also you assumptions make me assume your a knob.
