If you are still on the search for a good psychological thriller, I suggest giving a try to "Strange Sally Diamond" with the UK ending. I think it's on sale on Kindle UK, or better as an audio (that's how I read it, and it's a very good read on audible).
Yay!!!😁❤ Emily has uploaded again 😊. Hmmm 🤔. Hard question ❓... I'd have to say... The ones that I like was a J.A Jance book 📖. Her books I love a lot. I've read only two lol 😆. I read a thriller part of a series. Called Hatchet Island 🏝️. Very good. William Kent Krueger's books so far are entertaining. Robert B. Parker and the later authors writing his books since his passing. Newer Sherlock Holmes novels. 😊
This is a great mystery list! thanks for this Recommendations i didn't like The Silent Patient, I'd also suggest "Mystery on the Midnight Express by Florence Bearden". It’s an illustrated murder mystery that adds a unique visual dimension to the story, with a gripping plot and beautiful artwork that brings the characters and the train setting to life. Perfect for anyone looking for an atmospheric, suspenseful read!
I'd like to recommend Exit by Belinda Bauer to anyone who loved The Thursday Murder Club. It follows Felix, a sweet old man who works as an exiteer, someone who sits by people who unalive themselves because of terminal illness. One day one of the 'exits' goes wrong and he starts to think he's being set up so he and his dog Mabel do some investigating. It's so good!!
So glad that you enjoyed The Appeal! I just finished The Twyford Code, also by Janice Hallett, which sounds like the one sampled at the end of your copy of The Appeal. If you decide to read Twyford, I would recommend a blended read with both the printed book and the audiobook. A lot of the voice memos are dependent on British dialect and hearing it spoken helped me understand it much better than I could have just reading it (I'm American btw). The ending of that one is a doozy! I love how her books are puzzles that you can put together if you're clever enough (which I am not, but I enjoy them anyway).
I loved The Silent Patient BUT it was my first ever mystery/thriller book and the twist got me really bad! I have since read a lot from this genre and I don’t know if I would still love it 🤷🏼♀️
I thought The Silent Patient was alright and the twist was creative, but I wouldn't read it again. I think it's better than some other thrillers I've read, but it's overall pretty mid for me.
I absolutely hate The Silent Patient. As a woman that book gives me surprise Pickachu face vibes. If I wanted to hear/read monologues from a man who hates women I would have gone into the incel world 🤷🏽♀️
I actually enjoyed Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone lol. If you are looking for something a bit darker but so well-written, I recommend The Dry by Jane Harper. It's a murder mystery set in Australia and was so good. I love her writing. Another one i enjoyed was The Way of All Flesh by Ambrose Parry, which is a murder mystery set in Victorian Edinburgh. Some of the characters will infuriate you, but I really love the strong female character.
Murder Mystery in a Fantasy seting is my favorite. I need to read "The Divine Cities". "Murder at Spindle Manor" by Morgan Stang, self published, really fun, was my last read from this genre and I loved it.
Stopping by to say thank you for this video. Since watching it I have read Wrong Place, Wrong Time and really enjoyed it. It had been on my list to read for a while and I'm glad I finally did. Now I'm reading The Appeal and went to bed late reading it last night. It is so hard to put down because of the format. You want to know what the heck is going on but because it is split up in such short sections you keep telling yourself "let me read just one more". These two have gotten me out of a reading slump so thanks.
I enjoy your recommendations, and I’m curious about how, what, and why you put post-its in a book. I saw your other video where you showed Gone Girl, and you had put tons of post-its in it. I want to try doing it your way!
I loved this video and I agreed with your opinions on all the books I've read! I'll need to pick up more of your favourites. I just finished 'Listen for the Lie' by Amy Tintera as an audiobook and really enjoyed it. The format is similar to some of the ones you mentioned - there is a true crime podcast and the episodes are interleaved with the chapters.
In terms of Janice Hallett, I believe all of her books are completely told through mixed media. You NEED to read The Mysterious Case of The Alperton Angels, it’s so good!
Agree with you about The Silent Patient - I HATED it and haven’t read another thriller in several years. But your video reminded me that I enjoyed The Devotion of Suspect X and will give Malice a try. Another good Japanese author is Natsuo Kirino. Her book Out is worth reading if you haven’t already. Thanks for your persistence with this hit-or-miss genre.
I know you didn't like it or dnfed I can't remember but as someone who's not a mystery or thriller girly I loved Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice to Murderers! My love for tea may be the main reason for it lol but it was quite cosy and funny Also as I have to be careful with thrillers and how triggering they can be I started with yound adult ones and really enjoyed these two: The Girls I've Been, and Compound Fracture!
favourite murder mysteries: Dr Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths - British, cosy, smart woman protagonist (I actually love all Griffiths' series but this is the best). Detective Lou Norton series by Rachel Howzell Hall - LA police procedural, smart woman lead, looks at racism and poverty in relation to crime but is also funny. Nanette Hayes Mysteries series by Charlotte Carter - very cool saxophonist gets drawn into murders in 1990s New York, another smart woman lead. Stand alone fave is Beneath Devil's Bridge by Loreth Ann White - small town, podcaster revisiting old crime, chilling atmosphere, maybe more of a thriller but also counts as a murder mystery.
I recently read "The Golden Spoon" by Jessa Maxwell. It's a cosy murder mystery set in an isolated manor in America that's hosting a Bake Off style cooking show. I really enjoyed it. Raced through it in a couple of days.
I think you might enjoy The Other Side of Night! It's a speculative mystery/thriller that takes place in England. I recommend it for people who liked Wrong Place Wrong Time
It’s more horror/haunted house than mystery/thriller, but I’d recommend And the Trees Crept In by Dawn Kurtagich. I’ve never really heard anyone talk about it, I just randomly found the audiobook through the library and the title caught my attention. Very creepy and atmospheric, perfect for this time of year!
I just finished The mysterious case of the Alperton Angels by Janice Hallett and OH BOY did I love it!! Plottwist to the last page! This one is about a coldcase from a cult and now, 18 years later there are two (kinda rival) writers that want to write their books about this case and all you read is their research and (horrifying) secrets. I think you will also like this one! Most, if not all, her books are written through transcrips, messages, mailings etcetera and I love this kinda storytelling.
If youre looking for a paranormal cozy series that's full of cats and so good check out the Witch of Edgehill series the first book is Pawsitively Poisonous. I also loved Amanda Flower's magical bookshop series.
I loved the Silent Patient! I guess I am very naive - I didn’t see the twist coming! At all! I had to go back a few pages and re read because I couldn’t believe it! 😂😂.
You might like the Book of Cold Cases by Simone St James. It's about a true crime blogger who stubbles upon an acquitted murder from the 70s and interviews her and the some spooky stuff starts happening. Also Crooked House by Agatha Christie, you will not figure out who murdered the somewhat criminal patriarch of a small, but rich family.
Murder Mysteries are my favorite! I'm reading a locked room murder mystery, Guess Who by Chris McGeorge right now! Will be posting a review soon on my channel!
I loved wrong place wrong time and the girl with the dragon tattoo! I need to check some of these out this fall. So many books to read especially when I finished the way of kings recently!
Dragon tattoo is part of a series. Girlwho payed with fire and girl with a hornets nest are great. The others are by another author and not as good, IMHO. Have fun
Have you never read Sadie by Courtney Summer and Emma in the NIght by Wendy Walker? Because you should try them! Sadie is written similar to Night Swim.
If you are still looking for books that don’t have the typical chosen one, you might like Never Too Old to Save the World: A Midlife Calling Anthology. The protagonists are women in various stages in adulthood and I loved seeing them all bring their own spin on the typical fantasy narrative. Thanks for another great video!
I just drove through Quebec to NB. I'll be driving back in a week and a bit, any good audiobooks recommendations or bookshops I could stop at? It's a long drive.
Have you read "Notes On an Execution" by D. Kukafka? I've heard really good things, haven't read it yet, and was wondering what would be your opinion on it
If you want a mystery, you‘ll be disappointed. It’s more of a character study, than a mystery. You know from the start what happened. Still loved it, though. But it‘s definitely not for everyone, the Killer POV chapters are tedious to get through and I‘ve rolled my eyes every second sentence, because I wanted him to shut up 😅
OMG yes. I hate it when the entire book hinges on knowledge the POV character DEFINITELY KNOWS that is just hidden from the reader. If the POV character knows it and you're reading from their perspective, then IT CAN'T BE A TWIST/REVEAL!!!!! Kat St. John's book The Lion's Den did this and I am still mad about it. Like, the character goes on this boat trip and has a whole hidden reason for going that isn't mentioned at all until the big reveal at the end, except the story is told entirely from her perspective, so she has this ulterior motive the WHOLE TIME. What? It can't be a secret if you tell the story from her POV since it should inform her EVERY ACTION and thought. ARGH!!!!
Totally agree with you regarding The Guest List by Lucy Foley. I did finish it finally, but I put it down numerous times as well. I disliked the book so much that I'm extremely reluctant to read anything else by Foley.
I have two recommendations as someone who does not really read murder mysteries. The first is Pine by Francine Toon, it's not very highly rated on goodreads but I remember enjoying it. The second isn't exactly a murder but more a mystery and it's Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey where the main character is an elderly woman trying to solve her best friend's disappearance.
You forgot BABEL!!!!!! I'm currently reading it and OMG! It contains everything I like about a book.. Definetely my all time favorite book and I haven't even finished it yet..!
I wasn't a fan of Janice Hallett's books (I read her first 3), but for a murder mystery written unconventionally in a similar style i.e. through script/screenplay, I recommend Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter.
Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz was adapted into a TV show by the BBC (and I thought it was well done). It's on iPlayer in the UK, not sure how you can access it in Canada.
Grave Expectations by Alice Bell is set in an old rambling English manor where the protagonist is a medium who can communicate with ghosts to try to solve an old murder. It's what I thought of when you were describing How to Solve Your Own Murder, but I haven't read How to Solve Your Own Murder so I don't know if the comparison stands.
Really? I’ve seen it on lots of lists but it’s totally worth reading. The book has a rough start but things pick up after and the investigation of an old disappearance during a family event on an island is a good premise. Some TWs but I enjoyed it!
Best mystery of the year -The Lost Village by Camilla Sten (translated) Best historical/witchy -A Restless Truth by Freya Marske Best historicals -Season of the Raven by Denise Domning -The Fosdil Hunter by Tea Cooper -Wolf Winter by Cecilia Ekbäck Best Classic -Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
So i never read the silent patient but I read the fury by the same author recently and it is so BAD. Written horribly very predictable and a friend of mine who read both says its almost an exact carbon copy of silent patient....
I absolutely loved The Guest List. I loved how every silly detail mentioned there had a meaning later on in the story. It is in my top three murder mystery list.
What are your favorite murder mystery books?
Ragnar Jonasson and Jane Harper.
I was gonna say! Every Jane Harper book I’ve read I’ve liked
If you are still on the search for a good psychological thriller, I suggest giving a try to "Strange Sally Diamond" with the UK ending. I think it's on sale on Kindle UK, or better as an audio (that's how I read it, and it's a very good read on audible).

The patient was silent but Clawdia was not! Please give her some head pats from me. I love her opinions!

'The Mysterious Affair at Styles' by Agatha Christie is really good in my opinion. Also a quick and easy read 🎉
I made it 3 pages in… her writing puts me to sleep lol I’ll try the audiobook… eventually
@BookswithEmilyFox haha, oh noo. It is a bit difficult to get into, but once you're in, it flies by. Found it quite cosy too
@@BookswithEmilyFox Ah really? You might like Murder on the orient Express . A lot of characters and stuff happens pretty fast

Not Clawdia absolutely losing her shit in the background 🤣
She’s been at it in almost every video in the last month 😭
The Silent Patient…thank you! I did not understand what I missed when I read it that it would get so much hype and positive reviews.
I loved The Silent Patient BUT it was my first ever mystery/thriller book and the twist got me really bad! I have since read a lot from this genre and I don’t know if I would still love it 🤷🏼♀️
I read all three of his books. They pass the time, that's all I can say
I thought The Silent Patient was alright and the twist was creative, but I wouldn't read it again. I think it's better than some other thrillers I've read, but it's overall pretty mid for me.

You must try the Lady Hardcastle mysteries. So cosy and easy reads, set in small villages/towns. I really enjoy them.
Love these books! They’re my comfort reads.
Justice for The Secret Circle!!! 🤩
The vibes were so good! Perfect fall watch too
The Thursday Murder Club is so cozy and fun. It made me miss my grandparents 😂❤

if someone hasn't already said it- Richard Osman said hes writing a 5th Thursday Murder Club coming next fall :)
RJB has said he’s not sure why people think Shadow of the Leviathian will be a duology/trilogy. We are getting a series. So exciting for us Ana fans!
