I only ever got these little pots as part of paint by numbers sets. My most vivid memory of them is that the lids were either impossible to open, didn't close properly or refused to stay open. Sometimes all of the above.
These are tempera paints which is used for all kids painting. Its washable and not actually acrylic. The main difference between acrylic and tempera paint is in their composition. Due to the makeup, acrylic is more durable, glossier, and thicker and is better suited for traditional art projects. Tempera paint is thinner, faster drying, and easier to clean up, even after drying.
@@wayfaringspacepoet Yes. What is sold as tempera paint to kids is essentially a low quality version of a gouache. There is real artist tempera, which is the actual tempera, but that is a different type of paint that is made with high quality pigment and egg. I have no idea why the term tempera is used for kids' paints.
I used to hate kid's tempera paints, but I kind like them now. They're semi-transparent so I can see my lineart, and they wash right out like watercolor. You just need to find the paper for them. It should be quite thick, yet doesn't have sizing like watercolor paper. Thinning with water honestly makes them feel awful, so when I want a tint, I just use my white paint.
It just shows that even using cheap kids supplies can make really good art pieces. Tho I think Kasey should have put whiskers on the catagon (cat dragon)
They finally got the memo on these paints to make the tops individual. All I can think of is when they'd all be attached in one long strip and opening/closing the sets of paint was a nightmare 😂
I LOVE this illustration! The clouds as a frame works so well and the dragon is cute! And I kinda feel like the mistakes just adds character. I legit love this piece!
Kasey is the only artist I have found on RUclips who creates at least one but usually multiple illustrations every single video, and it actually feels like she's having fun doing it
I found the Molotow brand masking pen works on more paper brands than so many others! I use masque it for most of my watercolor paintings but bought the Molotow masking pen on a whim and I was surprised at how well it worked! I believe that you can create no matter the supplies, since you are a tremendous artist! So cheap paint is not a roadblock for you!
Love this, so cute! A tip for masking fluid, use a solid silicone brush to apply it. I find that it works the best because you can clean the brush to remove the dried fluid that gunks up.
1:27 is it just me or are these paints really not that bad compared to what i remember them being (or what they were) when I was little?? Those have some good coverage and pigmentation!
Oh man, I always wanted paints like that as a kid. Any kind of paint that was ready to dip the brush into - ANY! All my parents would get me as a kid were opaque paint cakes, and that just wasn't the same. Whenever I was somewere where I could paint with paints like that, I would get super excited.
It turned out so cute!! Love the dragon, layout, sky, and colors! I know it caused problems, but I think the texture really adds to it with the chunkier, streak filled sky and even some of the fluffy rips in the clouds! Amazing job, as usual 😁
This also reminds me of the sheer paints you use for sun catchers. You should do a video making them or attempting to paint on glass and having the image show on the other side of it.
I think that we all think we need the best art supplies to make good art, and I always love when pro artists absolutely demolish that notion! Thanks for the inspiration and reminder that practice is the only thing that, in the long run, counts for anything.
Thank you for sharing another video with us! I'm sure you've already thought of it (since you do so much washi tape art), but I've always found for larger areas, covering the area I want to mask off with making tape/washi tape and then cutting it out (like you do with your washi tape art) works leagues better than masking fluid. It doesn't tear up the paper, I don't accidentally miss areas, and there's no drying time. I still use masking fluid for tiny areas but definitely prefer tape for larger sections.
Hey Kasey! I’m a watercolor artist that relies a lot on masking fluid, so I thought I could give you some tips: -Try to apply it in a constant thickness -Remove it by pulling on it slowly, like you’d remove tape from the piece. Rolling tends to break up the paper easier. -Once in a while, wash your brush while applying. Latex is water soluble while in liquid form. Good luck!
I’m sure someone has said this already. But to keep masking fluid build up on your brush, work it in some very soapy water (like 2parts soap and 1part water, and using a liquid dish soap like dawn) make sure it covers all the bristles and DON’T WASH OUT THE SOAP. Dab off the excess water but still keep it damp, and then start using it with the masking fluid. It will make the masking fluid easier to wipe off the brush in between strokes and helps cut down the buildup.
your videos always give me inner childhood joy. I am happy to see that no matter your supplies or level of artist as long as you have fun it's worth it! 💗
I don’t “think” I’ve seen it (at least not in a while) but since you are so good/experienced in cutting washi tape - have you used it as “masking fluid”? (Either washi tape/painters tape/art tape) I feel like it world probably take the same amount of time to do (brushing vs cutting) - or like you mentioned (using masking fluid more) maybe you could do a dedicated video for masking fluid with different types/brands and different art mediums? I’ve definitely had experienced the same issue with masking fluid 😭 I really like how the dragon & background turned out! The crayola videos are some of my favorites 💜
Do a fullon video focusing on masking fluid! Testing out different techniques, use it differently on several printings! Would love that! Also - love the illustrations! 🥰
i absolutely LOVE the duality between you and Doodle Date's experience with crayola products 😭💖 i love the outcome of the piece i'm so glad you embraced the glitter paints the way that you did
I was born in the 00’s but have older siblings from the early 90’s so I remember using these when they were old and hardened or had devolved into goopy globs. 😄 We had some from a 3D dog miniature painting set, it was super cute and fun.
I've been thinking about these paints lately!! sometimes I'd like to try them out again as an adult and this video definitely hasn't dissuaded me lol -also just realized this was uploaded on my birthday, I think it's a sign lol-
Hey Kasey you should try a ruling pen to apply your masking fluid. They are cheap and come in different sizes. Takes a little getting used to because it’s basically a dip pen but the best part is they are metal so the masking fluid won’t ruin anymore brushes. You can even use them with paints to make really crisp lines. Might be worth looking into.
I also have issues with masking fluid, so instead I just use masking tape over the shape and a exacto knife to cut around whatever I'm trying to mask! It works better for me than the fluid that more often than not messes with my paper, although you might get some knife marks on the paper if you cut too deep through the tape. I don't mind it since the alternative is so much worse 🤷♀️
I loveeeed these! I wish to find that type of paint again, it's so flowie and nice, I use a lot of cheap art products cause it's a hobbie and I think it's the person doing that makes the piece an art piece, a person with no passion can do very bad with expensive itens soooo... Thank you for the video! Your mind is soooo creative and I got surprised with every piece you do!
There are brushes for skin care, or not brushes but spatula/tool thing for masks that are made of silicone, i think there are aome for paint too, but I think something like that would help with masking fluid, easier to clean so it doesn't clump up
I love your videos! Kitty nose & whiskers tho? Lol and I missed the back leg... looked more dopey and cute with it but honestly you have such fun videos and they're oddly comforting as well. You're very talented and I love watching you dive in.
Hii I, Always love your content... I went to click on something and the notification came up over it right before I clicked and accidentally came her super early ✨
Some other comment said to "pull it off slowly in the same way you pull a command strip" (whatever that means!) so that might help. I usually just use washi tape/masking tape and cut around whatever I need to mask, which works well if you don't mind potential knife marks on the paper (which is most visible when using watercolors over it, but can also be used to your advantage if your cut-lines are clean and look nice). Might also be able to avoid the marks if you're light-handed and only cut through the tape! Would definitely test these tips on a small scale before using them on a big piece though, just to be safe ☺️
it's amazing. each time you show of these things like these cheap childhood colors which I hated i think "ok but this time what she draws will look horrible" but each thing you draw looks like a super PRO art piece xD
When I was little I had a Derpy mlp figurine and i wanted to make a fnaf Toy Bonnie mlp figurine so i took Derpy and painted her with these exact paint but i ran out cause they had to little paint in the containers on top of that they were kinda dried, but they didn't wash off that well... I'm sorry Derpy Hooves.
They may not seem great to paint with as you’re older, but these were the best paints to get get you to stardom as a kid.
That and big marker sets.
i hated them
i got them as a gift bc i was known to like drawing, and i despised it lol
I only ever got these little pots as part of paint by numbers sets. My most vivid memory of them is that the lids were either impossible to open, didn't close properly or refused to stay open. Sometimes all of the above.
the thing about the lids is so true XD
Frr the damn things were so indecisive

I thought it was tempera! Glad to know I was right!

hello steph!
The *brush*
Also hi steph, big fan of yours! :D
It just shows that even using cheap kids supplies can make really good art pieces.
Tho I think Kasey should have put whiskers on the catagon (cat dragon)
and also shape the pupils ! Like making them narrow like cats when they are in bright environment

I feel like the glittery sky really embraces the fact that it is using kid’s art supplies

My childhood right there.
Kid me would’ve LOVED the big box with the diverse colors!

"Well, well, well, look what the cat dragon."
"... You mean 'dragged in'?"
"No. Cat dragon."
when you use masking fluid, you want to pull it off slowly in the same way you pull off a command strip. it will never rip your paper again. 👍🏻
This is probably my favourite illustration you've done! The vibrant colours and the derpily adorkable dracat are just so happiness-inducing!

Kasy, on paintings this big, you can use masking tape. Cut it like washi tape, to shape, and it's shouldnt rip your paper
The texture can be like scales on the cat-dragon or maybe if we are going a bit darker it got sun damage or hurt. I don't know 😕.

Airbrush medium helps to thin out and extend those potted paints …
this just made me realize toothless from “how to train a dragon” is a cat or dog dragon lol
I would cut off the connectors n would end up loosing some lol
Are cats the new ants?
I love the look of those little pots, but the chalky way they dry on my paper makes me weep.
That was not a paint brush. That was a disgrace! But cat dragons are awesome!
*Raises hand* (I remember those. =)
Love the painting. =)
0:24 I hate that kind of brush. I rather if there isn't any in the packet.
i think the paints tempura paint
Cat dragon's the hottest pet to hit the market
so who else actually raised their hand without thinking?
