This was cool to watch. I remember him playing a bit of harp on an episode of Mork & Mindy too. Robin is a huge hero of mine as well, I really wish he were still here. My heart still aches for him

Yes I love Robin Williams and very grateful for your comments about being as one with the band and the music no matter. ❤️ very encouraging 👏

I love this! It's not always about being the BEST harmonica player for me but having the best harmonica heart. If you are worried about what they think you need to put down your harp. If you play from your heart and for you....blow on baby! That is my opinion. Thanks Tomlin for the listen.

Totally agree Tomlin. He was one helluva unique entertainer, a natural genius and it's sad he had the problems and gremlins he had to deal with in his life. This video is tremendously inspiring.

Great and entertaining review, Tomlin. Robin will continue to inspire us for generations to come. He was a genius and could play enough to be a load of fun.

I sent in this suggestion. I was so excited when I saw the video on my feed! Great video. Also, you are so right about playing in a jam session. I started playing just over a year ago. About six month back I went to a jam session. I was so scared and wanted to sit back but the guy that organized it said no, that all I had to do was take out my C and make noise that sounds right. After the first time, I was like, “this is so cool!” All the other players cheered me on and I got so much confidence to keep going.

This reminds me of when I first watched Dudley Moore perform Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and was totally blown away, because prior to that moment I had no idea Dudley was even a pianist, let alone a phenomenal one! It's a similar experience happening here for me with Robin Williams - I'm blown away! 😮 (no pun intended)

Thanks for tying Mork's performance to beginners working up the nerve to play in front of other people and/or a band. I've only been able to work up to playing in front of my wife.

This is great; I've never seen this before....and it's a few miles from my house. I've seen Dan Ackroyd sit in on harp with Buddy Guy (and I think I saw Bruce Willis do that once too)....but never Robin W.

I’ve been playing on and off for over twenty years. I’m ok-ish but I’m not great, and I think playing with a band would stretch me and make me better. But it’s all about confidence.
At a minor music festival 20-odd years ago I pitched my tent next to a bunch of musicians. They were playing blues guitars with a mandolin thrown into the mix. I was on my own in my tent with my four trusty harmonica’s (c, a, g and low f. Actually, the c was a rubbishy Hohner Pocket Pal and not trusty at all!). The blues men in the next tent heard me play a few squawky notes - I really wasn’t very good - and they asked me to join them. Three guitarists and a mandolin player, all in their late 50s or older, and one of them brought their son with a snare drum and cymbal. They were drunk, as was I. But they were hot players. I was not. They really encouraged me, even though my playing was dire and I wasn’t always playing in a suitable key. But we had a blast. The next day one of the guys told me that one of the others, a feller named Percy, had been a professional musician in his youth. He’d even toured in a band backing Peter Green. I then remembered how bad I’d really sounded the night before, despite their kind remarks, and thought “what the hell am I doing playing with these guys. Who do I think I am?” But they were a really nice bunch and we hung out quite a bit through the festival.
I never saw them again. And I never played with a band again.
I think I only had the courage to join in that time because they asked me to and because I’d had a pint or two, but however bad I played I had a real blast. Wish I could do it again. I think that being with a group of musicians forces you to learn new stuff to keep up and stretch your abilities. It forces you to learn how to play in time, how to keep rhythm and how to play in a way that best serves the music and not yourself.
I wish I knew a band of musicians good enough to make me stretch and push myself, but not too good so that I lack confidence to play with them. I was in my early twenties then. I’m in my mid forties now, so that ship has probably sailed.

Tomlin, would you mind taking a look at Mark Feltham (not unusual harpist, i know!) but him playing with oasis unplugged MTV on masterplan...He just adds great colour to the song and really shines, worthy of some love, cheers!

He was having a good time. I think that's what its all about. Good advice Tomlin, just get up and do it. I"ve never done it myself, still in the "i'm not good enough yet" mode. I'll keep working on it though. Someday......

Wow, I can now say that I'm about as good as Robin Williams. The first time I stood in with a group was magical! Unfortunately, shortly thereafter my house and harps burned to cinders. But I'll be back!

I just watched your video on learning how to breathe learning the Harmonics, I bought a Suzuki SCX-48 4 weeks ago and I still can’t get clean notes from holes 2/3 mainly draw notes, I realise it’s me and not the harmonica but I’m really struggling with this breathing method, I get so frustrated I have to stop and put it away otherwise I’d throw it in the river! 🙁

Like many novices he’s blowing too hard, giving a honking tone and very slightly out of tune, esp opening riff. But thx for sharing!
