    Liked your point about selective breeding. I know squat about animals, but I select seeds in my garden, and its crazy how much a variety can improve in just a few generations when you choose the right genetics.

    Low copper is one of the primary reasons for parasites. It's critical, though, to keep the goats that are parasite resistant. It's so hard to send on does that you love, but aren't really suitable for your breeding goals. I'd add that the #1 reason for chemical wormer failure is treating the entire herd instead of just the ones that need it. FAMACHA is imperative.

    • @cornpop6969
      @cornpop6969 6 месяцев назад

      Are you saying you should only treat the ones infected, or that it is a mistake if you do?

    • @patriotsongs

      @@cornpop6969 Treat the infected but don't keep them. Keep your herd strong and eventually you'll have a parasite resistant herd.

    Good info! I’m glad Bear let you get through it.
    We have a nice small goat herd but last year all of our does aborted pretty further along. Vet said it was leptospirosis. He said it’s common in cows and in school they were taught that goats can’t get it but he swears they can. That was a very hard lesson learned. Anyway, this year produced several beautiful babies!

    I agree with what you've said though I don't have a guard dog. They are in a good high pen at night and when it's raining. I was lucky as the doe I started with literally had her first two within five minutes, with no trouble.. She has passed the easy birthing on to her daughters who have passed it on to their daughters. I raise Boer goats in Alaska, I love the breed. I have been very fortunate and have had good stock. I have found for us breeding for spring kids is healthier for the kids. Winter can be tough on those little ones and there is nothing cuter than a batch of spring kids jumping all over the yard. We have a Border collie that runs the yard and keeps the bears and other predators away. Worming is on an individual case, usually spring thaw and fall freeze. Sometimes I get an animal that needs a little more. Selenium is a biggy our soil is so depleted. So they get a dose before breeding and before kidding so those babies are strong to start. Thanks for sharing how it's done on your farm. I do agree that you need to cull heavy to make the breed strong. plus have a great buck "always breed up".

    • @truth9547

      We just joined a 4H group in our neighborhood and that's how they do it. Every spring there's a bunch of babies born and people are buying their show goats. Winter weather isn't an issue for the babies at all.

    Our goats get a pretty big area in the summer, but get closed up in a shed at night, and sometimes (depending on the pasture rotation) our two horses are in the pasture with the goats. Our two wethers (we have three goats, and will breed our doe hopefully) are tough little crappers. My wethers both have HUGE horns and definitely know how to use them.

    • @te7931
      @te7931 Год назад

      Goats, no matter how big they are or how big their horns cannot defend against wild dogs or coyotes, esp a mama coyote teaching her pups to hunt. You're following yourself on that. We've had a 379# Boer buck that was killed by roaming domesticated neighborhood dogs defending his girls. Do not do this. Get an Anatolian and save your friends.
      Smh.

    You got my thumbs up. Parasites are the #1 Problem in goats & other livestock that creates a #2 Secondary Infection of Pneumonia, & #3 Eventual Failure of the goats or other livestock animal's Intestinal Function. Billions are spent yearly by professionals on this alone. I feel if they had a cheaper way that was actually effective, like the all natural methods, they would have been using them decades ago. Money is king where professionals are concerned. Which speaks for itself that they do not use them.

    Glad to see your doing the collaboration this year. I had goats a few times but your right about the Boars goats. They are so stocky and a beautiful goat, but you have to worm them. We have non-climbing horse wire across the front of our property, but most of it is barb wire. Wished we were younger I would love to fence the barb wire with non-climbing horse wire and get some goats. There are weeds that the cows will not eat that the goats will plus I love goats. Anyone new to goats that want to raise goats find someone that has goats. See if they will answer questions and help you get started. Most people that have livestock is more than willing to help newcomers get started.

I work anywhere from 76 to 83 hours a week n get paid $15 a hour which isnt bad and no taxs are taken we do W9s so even though the checks are massive come tax time alot will go to uncle sam lol... But anyway me n my fiancee bought two Nigerian dwarfs kids. There only 4 weeks old and so sweet lol. We have had em for 4 days now and there a blast. I love watching them play they bonce around and jump onto walls n bonce off them lol. They are full of energy i love em to death they are so cute. But thanks for the video man it deff helps out.. Even though i care for our 700 goats here at the farm im now a proud daddy of 2 kid Nigerian dwarfs. And now im learning alot with feeding bottles of milk and the feed and the alfapha hay n grass ect

    Thinking about goats for brush. Fantastic videos, great host and Bear is off the hook. Fatal mistake not mentioned. Bear not having a canine back up. Dogs are very good in two's and three's. But they are very vulnerable alone. Coyotes, cougars, rare bobcats and rutting bucks will take a dog like that out, if it is alone. He needs a back up, even a beagle ....it is that distraction factor, but another large herding dog would be good.....in my LO.

      Very true. He actually needs 2 more for herd that size. Really not fair to him.

    New to the channel we have a small goat herd (about 15) I have a few friends who also have goats and I know a few of us have had problems with fence, it could be in my top 5 mistakes I made when I was new to goats, a good goat fence, if there is such a thing, anyways love the channel, keep the good videos coming!!

    We don't have goat's. We have never had goat milk, meat or cheese This is good information if we decide to get some. What do you raise them for? Some raise them just to sell.

    How is Bear doing? Watching this in 2021. He was confused because no onw was there and you were talking, so he thought you were talking to him.

    One of my pigs got out and broke the goats out. My dogs were out. Alone the dogs are fine. But together they seem to get some pack mentality going and things go south. One of my goats were roughed up by my dogs and I had to put the goat down due to his injuries. This has been my most fatal error now. I never thought my pigs would end up breaking the other animals out. Lesson learned.

    Agree. Only get your goats from the same herd. Good stock from a good breeder. Do your homework. Don't buy goats here and there from different breeders. Choose your breed that serves your purpose. Everyone has goats from different reasons.

    Any chance of a video on how you train livestock guard dogs?

    • @ginawrzosek6879
      @ginawrzosek6879 5 лет назад +13

      there's really not much to it. make sure you have a livestock guardian breed of dog, example: anatolian shepherd, great pyranese etc. and keep them in the barn/fence with your livestock right when you get them, dont pay too much mind to them of course feed, water and check up on it everyday but its instincts will catch on. puppying and babying it will make it into a house dog.

      @@ginawrzosek6879 its clear that Bear gets plenty of "puppying and babying" as you put it. Your advice may not be on point. It was just clearly stated that Bear does a good job. So who is giving bad advice hare? I think the original question was for a possible video on training a guard dog for livestock. Not ask Gina's opinion.

      S Smith but did dan ever get a video or other advice on training a livestock guardian dog? no, he didn’t. i wasn’t giving bad advice, i gave friendly advice any other person who knows what they are talking about in this subject would give.
      i never said bear did a bad job, everyone does everything different and i’ve known for years you shouldn’t baby your livestock guardians because they’ll be hanging around your house/barn more than they’d be out roaming with the goats.

      @@ginawrzosek6879 I know almost nothing about raising livestock guardian dogs, but everything that I read supports what you said. The dogs should have maximum exposure to the livestock and limited human attention. Some owners give their dogs almost no attention while others give as much attention as Bear gets. I think due to Bear being young, he wants more attention. As he gets older, I assume he will seek less attention.
