      @@CtchHndz any style can always be modernized and revived; the main issue is that it's too demanding and not many fighters wish to rely on a form of boxing that risks exhaustion in later rounds. Any boxer with a shorter stature and incredibke aggression, however, can be taught the form. There's also the issue that not many coaches teach it - though many do state it's simply a matter of comfort.

      It becomes second nature and the fatigue that people imagine would be there doesn’t exist. It just becomes how you move and it saves your ass so many times that your body doesn’t want to do anything else. Regular roadwork and diligent slip bag work on top of sparring etc… is all you need to keep you spar and competitive. I’m 44 and still get in the ring with 20 year olds and do multiple round robins. I expend less energy than others cause that head movement keeps me out of trouble.

      Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson were not trained in the same version of the Cus style. Mike was trained in a more evolved version of the style than Floyd or Jose Torres.
      There is a blueprint to the Cus style that makes it work. From there, you fight to your strengths. The fighters in the gym who grew up with Mike all fought to their strengths. Some were boxers, some used more footwork and angles, etc. But you aren’t necessarily making a new style and just keeping your hands up, as that’s no longer the Cus style.

    From what both Cus and Teddy Atlas said, peekaboo isn't for everybody. It's not even a first option, but a last resort for a specific type of boxer with certain limitations.
    As Cus put it in an excerpt I once read, he honed it for Floyd Patterson, a boxer who had limitations of short arms/ limited reach, but who could make up for that handicap with exceptional natural speed. The peekaboo allowed him to make best use of his natural talents within the parameters of his physical limitations. It was also a great fit for Tyson because he had also short arms/ reach, but could compensate for that with great speed and agility in a peekaboo style.
    So peekaboo only works for boxers who are exceptionally fast and agile. However, it takes so much work to get right and is so energy intensive, that it's not worth it unless somebody *has to* use it because of a specific handicap such as the short arms/ reach of a Patterson or Tyson. And it would only work if those boxers have extraordinary speed. If a boxer has normal arms and reach, he doesn't need peekaboo, and would be much better off with a different style. And if he has short arms and reach, but isn't extraordinary fast and agile, peekaboo would also be a bad fit.

      First time reading this and can totally agree. When I was young in 1986 I copied the pattern I had seen from Mike on VHS tape. In my boxing gym in Germany they taught the classic amateur style which was not effective for me with my short arms and I felt that this Peakaboo style would suit me better. I quickly realized that you need exceptional determination and a strong mind for this style. Developing these is a whole other story.

      Peek a boo style is like "cliff notes" an to get the whole story you add in the strengths for the fighter.
      That is what separated cus from the students that tried teaching. The "new teachers" taught how they fought in peek a boo not how their students should fight in that style.

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It’s a shame Cus style doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Patterson, Torres, Rooney and Tyson did extremely well during their careers. I do think it’s a more sophisticated style in regard to seek and destroy approach. I seen it as Aggressive counter punching! That being said the physical aspect and focus needed to pull off this peekaboo style for 12 rounds has got to be exhausting. Maybe? Then again those angles, hooks and body should put your opponent on his back or weaken them into submission.

    Another factor is that fighters today usually have very similar height, reach, and body composition. The peekaboo style tends to excel in situations where a fighter has less reach-typically a shorter individual who can "get inside" the opponent's range quickly and use their height as an advantage. However, this type of scenario is rare today due to the factors mentioned.

      it's also objectively an inefficient style since there are so many requirements to get it right. If you don't have the right proportions, athleticism, or fast twitch fibers, you're not going to get as much value out of it. A shorter fighter with a long torso and short legs will have slower dip + slip reset speeds compared to someone like Tyson who's torso to leg ratio are more even.
      If you don't have the explosiveness to cover the distance when pushing off the rear foot in a square stance, you're not going to be able to close the gap.
      And the demands on the legs, lower back, and cardio all add to the inefficiencies. For the vast majority of boxers, this style just doesn't make sense.

You mention 'The Master' who was this ? You mention about Teddy Atlas whom I do agree is a fantastic trainer and is still about. Why does he now not teach the Peek a Boo style ? Most of the fighters he has trained since leaving the gym has been traditional boxing style way ( Davy Moore; Plovetin ? I like what I am hearing about your goal though . I hope the style does not disappear as you have said you are the only trainer at the gym now teaching the style. Peekaboo fighting is a unique skill you need a special set of traits for it to work. The beauty of it is that it works for multiple approaches. Its very offensive natured attackers make for the peekaboo because you train to be so extremely defensive to compliment you natural offense. Patterson was a floaty outside striker from the peekaboo tyson was an explosive boulders from a cannon striker right inside of your defense. It is such an amazing style but it takes a special student.

      You would have to deal with kicks, especially leg kicks. So you would probably have to change the stance. Being an aggressive counter punching style, you would have to most likely make adjustments to deal with other things people would do that they can't do in boxing. It would end up looking very different, but so do wrestling and BJJ from their sports counterparts.

    Isn't the Peakaboo incredibly defensive in nature. Mike and Cus were able to make it seem very aggressive because Mike was insanely athletic and dynamic with KO power in each strike. That's why its died down, bot many people can do it like Mike, and I'm sure it's also not a syle that's built for longevity. As soon as your lose a step or slow down, that'll be a career.

    Credibility is in question here. No mention of Patterson and Torres, but there's a mysterious unnamed "master"? There's a reason Cus had success with the youngest fighters and that Mike couldn't use the style well as he aged

    I always have wondered if the peekaboo style could translate into MMA or kick boxing. Would adding kicks and elbows make it even more dangerous? Would the style be able to be adapted to MMA or kickboxing? For example all the head movements just lead you right into an elbow, knee or foot. Just curious.

  • @Marcustheseer
    @Marcustheseer 23 дня назад

    rule 1 pick a style that fits you rule 2 learn other styles just incase you might need them to adapt to youre opponant,rule 3 sometimes just do freesyle just adapt and do whats needed even if its not a style.
    the psychological rule is quat simple to me do youre best train in stamina and power and speed and ones youre in the ring nomatter who you got infront of you big or small nothing is ashured you both have equal chances it just depends on what you do.

  • @letteracura
    @letteracura 27 дней назад

    It's not just because it requires a lot of training and is still hard to master (and so no one is willing to put in the effort or resist the pressure of "badly imitating Tyson").
    Cus never develop an answer to "wrestling" style boxing, e.g. Holyfield's tactic. Also there is no answer to another tactic, i.e. that of Lennox Lewis, which is "waiting" for you inside with an uppercut.
    In short, speed is not enough to contrast such tactics. Peek a Boo works very well as a counter attack fighter, but as an offensive style it has at least those above mentioned weaknesses.
    I'd be curious to know about others' opinions on this!
    Thanks for the video! Best wishes

      @walmartian422 the dempsey roll is like the bonafide precursor to peekaboo imo. While i think its fair to say his style wasnt peekaboo, i also dont think you can mention it and not dempsey. Dempsey roll is to motocross as peekaboo is to supercross, if that makes sense... doubt you see one without the other even if theyre quite different.

    Best is add some of the style that works for you. If you're a textbook fighter in any style, all someone has to do is know the weak spots and counters
    There's a famous kickboxer whose name escapes me that incorporated peekaboo into his style to great effect, for instance.
    This is why MMA is what it is - you never know exactly what's cooking in the goulash.

    I like what your saying about teaching how they were taught as opposed to how they fought that holds true with so many things even the buddhas meditation technique that liberated the whole northern part of India but then people started adding to it and the efficacy diminished. I will say the one problem I noticed with this style is you can’t punch going backwards and to me that seems to limit you. Like Hagler could go back forward and so on like Ali as well and we saw when Tyson fought Holyfield, Evander went into him and didn’t back up and he was smaller as well now that might be because it was a different Tyson when he was younger he cut angles and so on but the people he was fighting looked like my Uncles in a bar fight. Holyfield on his 11th fight went 15 rounds with Dwight Muhammad. I also feel that peekaboo is better for shorter fighters but taller ones leave their stomach to open. Great video.

    • @awakenedsoul2638
      @awakenedsoul2638 29 дней назад

      For shorter fighters, peek-a-boo, I MIGHT AGREE! But anyone can learn this style as long as they are willing to put in the gruelling work, length of training and to learn properly on how to use this in a real fight to be good using this style! If you are too tall against your shorter enemy like 7 inches taller, you will just have to adjust your distance and angle of punches. Peek-A-Boo is not only hooks and upper cuts, like every style, it have jabs and straight punches.

    Ukrainian boxing school is the reason Peekaboo desappeared.
    Peekaboo style is easy to deal with if you box in Ukrainian school. Which is technic, long distance, footwork, jab.
    Peekaboo style is about mid-short distance and power. Disadvantage: slow on feet.
    Ukrainian boxers box from the distance, they are all authomatically ligher on feet then a peekaboo boxer. So they hit him before he reach mid distance, then they step back to keep the distance again.
    Jab and distance 10 rounds. Make him tired. Then they use a combination or right hand to finish.
    Example: Wladimir Klitschko. He finished all peecaboo fighters with his jab and distance.
    Usyk, Loma, Gvozdik, Berynchyk all Ukrainians box from the distance.
    Well, when they move up in weight they became smaller then opponent and start to use peekaboo too.
    Look at some Loma fights. Usyk vs Joshua and Fury (in some episodes he fights from the distance,in close range he fights peekaboo).
    So this style is stil in use buy Ukrainian guys vs bigger opponent on a short distances

His style is reminiscent from his Mexican Fellow Boxer Julio Caesar Chavez! Both an in-fighter, aggressive always and always throw many punches. Footwork, Headmovement, almost no jab, does not change strategy and have problems against boxers who have good jab and is an out boxer, Isaac have a hard time! You are forgetting the basics and fundamentals of boxing. Peek-A-Boo is not a style you can just mimic! I think it isn't used cause most people in boxing who make it far these days fight in 2 or 3 weight classes under where they should be. They look for reach and size advantage and the peekaboo style is better for a shorter boxer who wants to close distance and get inside. If you have the advantages you want to box from the outside and use a jab and straight hands.
