Not only is "This Beat Goes On / Switchin' To Glide" one of the greatest Power Pop tunes of ALL TIME (Top 5), it is the GREATEST two part segue Power Pop tune of all time! I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky USA and I can tell you that the big R&R radio channel, WQMF 95.7FM played this song at least once a week years after it's original release... always super stoked when it came on bursting thru the airwaves... a song that never lost it's energy or ability to make you just feel good... The Kings rock!
Love this series. Buffalo being a border city, we were fortunate to hear and see all great Canadian rock of 70s and 80s and treat it as ours. Thanks. Long live Max Webster.
I agree. Growing up in the Buffalo southtowns, I got to hear a lot of great Canadian artists on the radio in the 80s and 90s. Loved hearing this song! Also such artists as Platinum Blonde and Honeymoon Suite. I still miss 101.1 The Planet, later 105.1 The River and Ed FM. At least now there's 101.1 More FM, which is pretty close. They actually did play this song on there recently.
A great, timeless classic. I’ve had the privilege of touring with The Kings (when I played drums for Helix) and you couldn’t ask for a nicer bunch of guys. And a great band, too! I recently posted online that I regretfully lost my Kings tour t-shirt somewhere over the years-and they sent me a new one...and a bumper sticker...for FREE. A classy bunch.
this beat goes on/switchin to glide, after high school when i started working down in phoenix the rock station kupd 98.7 played it every friday afternoon around 4 most of the time i was getting in my truck to leave the job site headed to the credit union to deposit my pay great tune brings back the best memories and i also have it in my phone's mp3 player
Had a neighbor who gave me and my brother this album,David was his name,he wrote his name on the album cover as he did with all of his albums, anyway a couple of years later he passed away in a car accident, this tune reminds me of him,he was a cool dude, thanks David.
One of the best party songs ever. Q-FM-96 in Columbus Ohio used to play this every Friday at 5 pm, PARTY TIME! "Nothing matters but the weekend, from a Tuesday point of view!"
93.3 KDKB in Phoenix played it every afternoon drive on Fridays as well. The version they played had a “Hi, We’re the Kings” add-in between the song break.
This song is Great!!! I love everything about it! It just keep getting better! "Aaaaah Yeaaaaah, Ohhhhhh Aaaaaaaah, I'm switching to glide, I finally found my way outta this hole, you know? Outta this HOLE!!!!!" The singer NAILED that part!!! Thanks for posting.
40 years on this is still a great tune. Timeless classic. Still makes you get up and move. "THIS BEAT GOES ON!!!" This song will be better than anything made by todays "stars" as they won't have a song like this, last this long.
I got to meet them, introduce the band, and see them play in August 2007. That was one of the best days of my life, one I'll never forget. Love your music guys!
What an Awesome Track. It still sounds as fresh today, as it did back in 1980. Great Songwriting and Production. Mandatory Listening for All the Ages. :) Classic!
Thank you, that is a bit on interesting trivia to me. I lived in NY *state*, so we heard a lot of Canadian music. I often wondered how popular this and other Canadian songs were in the rest of the nation. The Kings appeared on a Dick Clark tv show at one time.
I'm glad you mentioned it. Even as time went by and I didn't listen to "Double Q" as much as I used to I always made sure I was at 98.1 on Friday at 5.
Love The Kings! And I don't care what they think of Amazon Beach. It's a fabulous album!!! But, The Kings Are Here is one of my fave albums of all-time! So amazing.
These guys were great band, great show, great guys..of the best live shows I ever saw,and I have been blessed to see many great acts and worked in radio for years..the energy they bring esp with sonny keyes, orig keyboardist...was amazing, great band and guys!!!
im sure you guys dont remember this but i seen ya play at the university of buffalo summer 1980 i think it was before this beat was a hit i was 17 and i had my first car 68 mustang man life was simple back then
Heard this first on KGB FM San Diego and then played it as a student DJ on KSM Palomar College radio and it still takes me back to then. You guys sound like you worked really well together 😉
Dave and Zero, bought yout CD and got a signed card with a thank you P from the 2 of you plus a Kings Sicker. Sent an E to you and Zero responded. More good stuff 4 me. Seeing this for the 1st time = good stuff and info. Down loaded STG / TBGO Lyrics and decided to follow U on RUclips. Well there were a bunch of repeats not included in the lyrics so i sdded them. Corrected 1 mistake and said to myself WoW thats a lot of words in the 2 part STG / TBGO song. Decided to count em minus punctation. Came up eith 447 words with repeats; that's One Hell Of A Composing Effort from Y'all and it shows in an amazing almost 6 minute long Upbeat Timeless Recording. Wonder how many Alphabet letters that is?! NAH 447 word count is enough.... Thanx Kings!!!!
The Lead on Switch is so short and concise and energy-packed, I am certain George Harrison would have approved!! I nailed this on air guitar so many times, I actually had to learn guitar to see if I was doin' it right!!!😎
Definitely one of the best anthems ever. Too bad restrictions don't allow we Americans to stream Canadian radio stations on fm radio apps. Luckily, I have a wide variety of Canadian radio stations available over the air including about 3 different Boom stations. Finally RUclips recommended something I can use!
I think this was the first album I purchased, (this or The Cars first) I thought the whole album was great. I started looking for the CD in the early 2000s, I came across "The Kings are here" website, Zero and I emailed back and forth for a bit and he sent me some extras in with my "Kings are here" CD. He seems like a really cool down to earth guy.
People were concerned with whether this song passed the "But Is It New Wave?" 80's sniff test. But what a great, crunchy rhythm guitar sound and stereo separation when you're listening in a car. Great driving song.
Bob Ezrin! Never knew he produced this. I remember when he got written up in our local paper around 1979 about gettin' tapped to produce this new concept project - The Wall. Didn't think much of the story at the time...until Pink Floyd released it. And then local boy Bob Ezrin's name was all over the place.
I love this/these songs. That line "nothing matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view" is one of my favourites. I really feel that one, but I feel like not enough people appreciate the clever lyrics of this song. And a confession, for so long I thought the line "me and Zero request you in the Mercedes" was a clever way of saying me and no one else, so an intimate get together for two, because I didn't realize Zero was the band member's name. I thought it was the number zero. lol
it's the Eagles Life in the fast Lane moment right there I love it.. Joe Walsh was just tuning his guitar and fucking around and Don Henley's like hey man that sounds really cool.. and next thing you know a good song was built around a Joe Walsh lick..

quite simply one of the best songs of the 80's
of the rock era

Kim Mitchell and the boys are so underrated.

My 18 yr old son, who loves all music from the 70s-80s, heard this for the first time the other day and just went ape shit....

Listened to a tonne of helix back in the day. Thanks for producing some amazing music !! Cheers!
Loved Helix! Great guitar riff and opening drums with Heavy Metal Love!!!! Drum opening with ROCK YOU is also a classic.
this beat goes on/switchin to glide, after high school when i started working down in phoenix the rock station kupd 98.7 played it every friday afternoon around 4 most of the time i was getting in my truck to leave the job site headed to the credit union to deposit my pay great tune brings back the best memories and i also have it in my phone's mp3 player

This song is timeless and needs to be covered for new generations.
Great song, and always played with enormous energy! Thank you guys!
40 years on this is still a great tune. Timeless classic. Still makes you get up and move. "THIS BEAT GOES ON!!!" This song will be better than anything made by todays "stars" as they won't have a song like this, last this long.

One of the best songs EVER!!!!
I remember when this song came out. I always loved this song. Take me back to yesterday.
What an Awesome Track. It still sounds as fresh today, as it did back in 1980. Great Songwriting and Production. Mandatory Listening for All the Ages. :) Classic!
Oh, come on. It sounds 1980, not fresh.
@@chocomanger6873 Nah, it's a party classic.
Another great Canadian band!!
I used to work at 98.1 WKQQ Double Q in Lexington KY. And we played that song every Friday at 5pm for over thirty years. I think they still do.
Thank you, that is a bit on interesting trivia to me. I lived in NY *state*, so we heard a lot of Canadian music. I often wondered how popular this and other Canadian songs were in the rest of the nation. The Kings appeared on a Dick Clark tv show at one time.

When I grow up I want to be in a legendary Canadian rock band
KLAATU 🤩😎
In the "does-not-age" category, guys. Good stuff. Such a great series
The Canadian music scene from the 60s through to the mid to late 80s was phenomenal, some great bands and some very good songs.
Coolest double song of all time.
Haha this song came on randomly I love when it switches.
I'm from Québec. Wish I had my own country.
This is a great song!
I loved this growing up in Barrie in the 70,s 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🇨🇦👍
I've always loved this song/these songs :-)
Love The Kings! And I don't care what they think of Amazon Beach. It's a fabulous album!!! But, The Kings Are Here is one of my fave albums of all-time! So amazing.
Don't tell people but I love this song! The first time! "Hey little Donna, still wanna"? Haha!

You guys are awesome. Prob my favorite song from the late 70s. . Can bring a person from the lowest of lows to a high in seconds. CHEERS !!
Insane amount of love for these two songs!
im sure you guys dont remember this but i seen ya play at the university of buffalo summer 1980 i think it was before this beat was a hit i was 17 and i had my first car 68 mustang man life was simple back then
As good as the day it came out.

LUV mr. zero
This song was championed by WLS (AM 890, Chicago).
Definitely one of the best anthems ever.

SilverBeat checking in with you guys❤❤❤. Songwriting is always stronger than musicianship when it comes to good music
We played this song in our band for a party. Huge hit
Seen them years ago when they played Toronna bars. lol
Still the greatest song ever!!
Cool song.
I always thought it was pretty crafty to get 2 of your songs played back to back on radio...hey Donna, still wanna?
One of my go to songs!
Also, what I like about you.
People were concerned with whether this song passed the "But Is It New Wave?" 80's sniff test. But what a great, crunchy rhythm guitar sound and stereo separation when you're listening in a car. Great driving song.
Classic 80's song,awesome.

Canadien rock bands from the 70s and 80s were awesome. To me it all started with April Wine!
Good stuff

Great song 💖 it when they Switch to Glide 🤘😮🤘 genius of a song it's 2 songs in 1 one huge hit!
Killer tune!!!!
Couple of great songs there.
it's the Eagles Life in the fast Lane moment right there I love it..
Joe Walsh was just tuning his guitar and fucking around and Don Henley's like hey man that sounds really cool.. and next thing you know a good song was built around a Joe Walsh lick..
Same with the bass opening to Rock Me Gently. Andy Kim said the bass player was tuning up with that riff in a different key.
These two tracks are the big hits, but that whole album is solid. Got a lot of spins on my turntable when I was in high school.
Damn good tune.
This guys should have been BIGGER.
I like them A LOT
For me, this should've been titled "Behind The 8-Track". Can you do this for "All The Way"? ;) Love you guys!

@@flipwright1138 ok Flip......
I always thought this track sounded like Cheap Trick
Speaking of influence, the main riff is similar to Quo's "Hard Time". Not sure who influenced who, if anybody did.
Are these guys original/founding members of the Kings?

What is the fascination with the lighting, seating, camera angles and zoom on hairlines?
Hey, Father Time doesn't stop for anyone...even at a beach party

How do they now look like Herman Munster and Aunt Bee? lol Amazing song though!!
