Better understanding and awareness of each other's cultures and a celebration of both worlds, being mixed should be a celebration of life and the diversity we have, it should never be looked down on, its a shame some people stay small minded and dont care to engage with people as they are. As a half Japanese half British person, I loved this interview so much! I can totally relate to the whole identity crisis thing, I feel Japanese in Britain and British in Japan. In my primary school in Japan the teachers told me to speak in American English in my elementary/primary school (I got pretty angry when the teacher told me that my pronunciation of "zebra" was wrong since it's different for Britain & America) and people at my school in Britain have asked me if I was Chinese as well. No need to hide about who you are in you blood.

    • @Elwen-xs7gr
      @Elwen-xs7gr 4 года назад +10

      If you really understand the strict and rigid conformity in Japan has been heavily influenced ever since kindergarten in Japan, I would say it is better to hide their half ethnicity rather than being outsider of the peer group. Why? Because in Japan, when you sticks out, that's it. You are an outsider. They may adore you like an idol, but never want to treat you as friends or part of peer group.
      You won't get local friends, cause they see you as superior and how you are so undesirable in the eyes of pure-blood since you are just half. No, they won't bully you. You are just being outsider. No pure-blood sincere friends, cause you are not one of them. They don't bully you, you are just being left like that. Alone. Forever. Of course, if you are lucky, you're gonna have some cool and sincere Japanese friends from school, but that's just really small hope, since some people are just ultra-nationalists.
      Japanese only wants to stand beside half who has high hierarchy like European, or Other East Asian, but not half-Japanese-South East Asian or half-Japanese Black, but still even half-American/European still treated like they are lower than pure Japanese human being( like example my friend who is half-Japanese/American is being asked by her Japanese co-worker asked does she like sex with white man, but her Japanese man/woman co-workers never asked other pure Japanese woman whether she likes having sex with white man eventhough the pure Japanese woman told anyone she did it?! Why? Because in the eyes of pure-blood Japanese, it is okay to treat half-Japanese as not one of them but pure Japanese woman is still one of them. It is not sexism, it is racism. Pure-Japanese men know it is inappropriate to asked that kind of question to pure-Japanese woman, but to half-Japanese, it is okay to ask them this kind of question, cause half-Japanese human is an animal first(according to half-Japanese friend I know)
      Being accepted by your own community is part of human basic needs, and in Japan, conform is the only option. I've seen majority cases of half-Japanese children are raised to overseas in their non-Japanese parents home country since if you are being outlier in Japan, then you're done. You'll be trapped forever alone. Good luck with that since Japan only allow to choose one citizenship.
      That's why, it is ironic if Japanese always treated as if they are special people in SEA country, but SEA people in Japan are seen as inferior in Japan.

      So hannah, does it mean you are okay not having local as sincere Friends since they are just treat you like total Gaijin? I know many foreigners actually worked hard to move back to their country origin after they know their half-Japanese children are not accepted as part of their group and the Gaijin also know they Will never has close Japanese friends. Human beings craves to get along well with the community he lives in, you can't just be alone forever just because you are Gaijin or half. If you look at "half-Japanese" hashtag on Instagram, you'll figure out why the many of those halfies never take selfies with Japanese friends, often alone, as if they are don't any social Life with Japanese friends. Plus, their career also are not at top compared to pure-blood Japanese. Many can't stand it, cause the cold racism are just too unberable sometimes. Too uncaring. Even a Japanese who moved to Singapore told me, people in Japan would go from warm to cool. Of course, they are kind when you are just tourist, short-term worker cause you are totally foreign, but until you living for long time, has Japanese spouse, raise your half-Japanese children, you will find out that Japanese does not want you to have the same level lifestyle them. You don't know how inside they are just proud of being Japanese.
      Yeah, be okay if treated like second class citizen, since pure Japanese are the highest hierachy anyway. Sometimes, it is not because you are white you have white privilege, it is just you are just treated like you don't exist, since you are not pure-blood. They may be proffesional at work, treat you like co-worker, but accept the fact that they will never accept you as part of their peer group. That's why many foreigners and half-Japanese leave cause they are just treated like they don't exist.

    I’m a half Japanese half white teenager living in the US.
    I really agree with the identity crisis thing, in the us I get treated as an Asian (this one time I was out with my dad that’s white a woman came up to me and asked him if I was adopted) but when I go to Japan, I immediately get treated like a foreigner, even though I’m also deeply connected to my Japanese roots...
    Hopefully as more and more halfs are born, people will become more used to half raced people :)

    This was such a great interview. I watched the documentary about Halfu too, which came out a few years ago. It kind of breaks my heart to hear some of these stories. I really understand these young people. I'm much older than them but I guess they still struggle with being half. I'm half Korean and half American. I live in the US on the east coast, but have visited Korea several times to see family. They are very accepting of me there as far as I can tell. Being half has it's challenges. I'm a little surprised with the racism the Italian experienced in Hawaii. I thought that there was a large population of Japanese there. I grew up in the South but in a city with a large military base. Many of my friends were half Korean because our mothers were friends. I don't recall experiencing that much racism but I can pass for hispanic or some other race, even Persian for some reason. I feel for all the other halfs out there wherever you are! I agreed with so much of what they said. There are challenges but I embrace my Korean side even though I'm never seen as Korean whether in the US or in South Korea. I hope that we continue to grow in how we treat people and embrace their differences. This was such a great interview. And the half Korean was right. They did do something here. They really opened up and honestly talked about their experiences, which helps other people like us and maybe it helps others to understand what it's like to be mixed race. I struggle sometimes with even saying oh I'm half American, or is it white or caucasian or West Virginian. I do feel isolated though. I have isolated myself from my mother more since my father passed away and from my family in Korea and I have no other family in the US. I live alone. And COVID really adds to that isolation. To be honest, I wish I understood my mother more. So I binge watch Korean dramas and movies, looking for some understanding of the culture I'm so disconnected from, living here in the US. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that.

    I was born in Brazil and moved to the USA when I was 5 and had a similar experience. To everyone in the USA, they called me Brazilian, so I grew up thinking I was just Brazilian. When I finally went to Brazil to visit for the first time when I was 18, everyone there called me American, and didn't think I was Brazilian. I speak fluent Portuguese and I speak fluent English. I realized that I have both sides.
    Then I moved to Korea for 5 years, which is where I met my spouse. I had a lot of hardship in Korea for a while by dealing with racism and xenophobia constantly, people assuming you know nothing about Korea even when you speak Korean fluently to them, and being barred from going places. And yet, to regain some sort of sanity back, you realize that you cannot influence the majority. Instead, I focused my energy on informing my friends and people who loved me about the different situations that happened to me, and shared my happiness with their friendship.
    Edit: i found typos because i just wrote this on a whim.

      Boris Erdogan i never considered myself intelligent lol but portuguese was my first language and the only language i spoke and continued to speak at home with my family. English became my dominant language because i used it in school from kindergarten to university. I only became fluent in Korean after moving there. Before moving, i had spent about 5 years studying by myself, and when i met my spouse we couldn’t communicate by speaking for the first 6 months without having a dictionary open. Lol then i really studied hard and during those 5 years in korea, my korean improved drastically where i could speak with everyone. It took about 10 years for me to eventually reach fluency. Anyways, since it rook a lot of time, perhaps not so intelligent hahah
