  • PLEASE READ!!
    Hi you guys!
So I wanted to sit down and talk to you about how I financed college and I hope that this video helps some of you out to figure out your options for financing college. Now, I understand that when it comes to grants it is based on your family income which is DIFFERENT for everyone, but this is how my situation worked and it may be similar to yours. Also I am NOT trying to brag in any way about me getting money to go to college. I am just sharing how much I received so you guys know that I am not BSing and prove I am not lying. I take pride in honesty and I am a bio nerd so I need to see evidence if I am to believe anything. I hope this helps you guys out and thank you so much for watching!
    Gabby

I never went to college because financial have always been a problem for my family since i was born, so college was not an option for me and i need to support my parents financially as soon as possible, especially when my dad got stroke and my mom diagnosed with breast cancer, so things were pretty bad lol.
Thankfully i teach myself how to write code since i was in highschool, i stay up late and went to sleep for like 2-4 hours almost everynight. I often skip school or fell asleep in class, but i manage to graduated from highschool in 2013 and get my first full-time job as a programmer afterwards, and my career start to climb up from there and now i can afford college for my little sister.
So yeah, things are getting better, and now my biggest concern are my parents wellbeing, so wish me luck for my journey ahead.
    Cheers!

Thank you so much for sharing, Gabby. Financial stress is a killer. I got a little teary-eyed at the end of your video because it truly is a sensitive subject. I didn't finish college because of financial stress. Both of my parents made / make around minimum wage my whole life, so I didn't have any financial support. I bought my own cars, my rent, utilities, I had zero furniture to start, my clothing. It all adds ups. I still get negative feedback about how I didn't finish - yet. It hurts a lot. I feel like such a screw up. Like, can't anyone see how nearly impossible college was for me? I know some people do it with worse or equally awful positions, but with the financial and emotional stress I grew up with, I decided that eating ramen noodles for dinner and doing laundry twice a month just wasn't the life I wanted. Between this video and your video about leaving med school, I feel a little bit of relief. So, thank you for giving me some inspiration to be me. Genuinely. Much love, I wish you all the best.

I grew up pretty poor as well, but I am taking agency of my life; and I am going to finance my education one way or another. I suggest you all do the same and stop worrying about other people having more money than you.

*CORRECTION* They will still accept your FAFSA after March 2nd. However, this comes at a price. When you submit your FAFSA by March 2nd you get priority to receive both the Cal Grant(pays tuition) and Pell Grant(Cash money). Applying any day after the advised March 2nd deadline will only qualify you for the Pell grant. In other words, this means, that you will still get some aid just not all of it if you apply any day after March 2nd. It's still recommended that you apply by March 2nd to get most amount of aid.

Hamida Sanford the pay x the amount of hours you work. Example 60 hours a months times 10 dollars is 600 a month ( 15 hrs per week) that is 7200 per year. Pay and hours vary-- and being in a work study can put you around opportunities w the college staff to learn about more funding help and it looks great on college resume--- more grants and scholarship potential.

  • @juanmarco2000s
    @juanmarco2000s 6 лет назад +13

Abby has some good info for self starters. Even if it doesn't help you,it should atleast inspire you to do your own extensive research. I myself took another aggressive pathway to free money to pay for College. I received $100,000 total from only 2 sources. And I already finished my BS in Planetary Science from one University and now I am enrolled and accepted to a another University in New York. I am going for my Masters in Astronomy. What's my money secret? It really is not that difficult. As you can can guess I am Scientist. So education is vital in my career role. But as for the secret you simply have to learn how to sell your dreams and goals to people in exchange for getting them to financially support your education. You must be honest, ethical, and have good intentions. I did not want regulated Government funds. I wanted private funds on my own terms. This is a different type of sales pitch. You don't ask the questions. The funder will ask the questions usually 5 specific questions and determine whether you get a check based off your responses. They like to keep it short and simple. The 5 questions asked to me by one of my funders a Earth Research Institute with a billion dollar networth. I met with the Director in person. Set in her office, drank tea, told a joke or 2 and made her laugh to soften our meeting and put her in a good mood. Then she began. 1. Why do you want to become a Scientist? 2. What do you hope to achieve in the world by following this career path? 3. Why should our Research Institute consider funding your education in Science? (Basically she meant, what's in it for them?) 4. What steps, course studies, memberships and other preparations have I already taken to make myself ready for school and the journey towards this career path? 5. How much money would I like to receive and approximately when?
That's it,no credit checks,no loans,no references,no jobs,no high IQ. Just be you and keep it real. One other thing anything over a $10,000 check, a funder usually likes to meet you in person to feel comfortable with the decision they make. These are private funders, they don't advertise their money availability, they don't make habits of lending or granting money, and they don't stand take pitures with you holding a big check like those lotteries. This is confidential money from the bank to your hand. If you meet in person with a funder, always bring a copy of your resume (CV),and include a wallet size photo they can attach to your resume, and you should have some introductory literature or acceptance letters from the college you seek to attend or are currently enrolled in.
I leave you with an inspiring short story. A friend of mine a Filipina, she was struggling with life in her country and she wanted to come to USA to work and live to take care of her family and sick father. She ask for my advise and assistance to change her life. I said what do you want to do in life. She said I want to be a nurse. I said great, let's make that happen. I showed her how to express herself intelligently in her career field and speak candidly about her dreams and aspirations as a young woman. She began writing her heart filled proposals, she contacted direct high level individuals inside of 5 prominent Hospitals here in USA. One contacted her and said they would like to discuss the possibilities of funding her request for furthering her medical education. She had one problem. She was still in Philippines and they ask to meet her in person. She had no money and no luck and was sad. I got her a plane ticket and paid her Visa fee she was approved quick and on her way to USA. She was going to Chicago. I made sure she had funds to stay a week out there. Next day she message me and say hey they approve me. She ask for $7,000. The Hospital blessed her with a full scholarship and a 30,000 check to help with living expenses. Then she was contacted by a University in USA and they accepted her,and sponsored her with a school visa. She finished school and returned to her country. She contacted them in Chicago from Phil to thank them again for all they did,and how it was life changing. The Hospital said we are not finished with you yet. They offered to bring her back in USA on full work Visa. She offered to pay me back for the plane ticket and visa fee. I said "Nope!,You deserve it! Stay blessed! This was some years back. Now she is living her American dream and happy. :)

I know MD has senator & delegate scholarships as other states should have.. and search your state's Higher Education Commission. Also check out jlvcollegecounseling.com for scholarships

I also leveraged smaller organizations and scholarships to fund my education. They were amazing. I applied for scholarships through my university as well which was very helpful. I literally want to cry, most students have to be forced to go to college, but I've been trying to get into college to continue my education for the past year-and-a-half. I am not even done with my associates degree for a community college, and I had to take semesters off to help my family out during the divorce. I just want to be able to go to a university and have a good college experience, but now I have to just look into more community schools that I can't stand, schools with people that aren't even near my age, who are constantly transferring in and out. I just feel like I can't go where I want to go.

The statement about FAFSA is wrong. Most people who send in the FAFSA do not receive grants. They are only eligible for grants if their parents make less than $50k a year. I have never received money from FAFSA other than loans. I am forced to pay for college on my own. The best option for money is to go through the school you are looking on attending. FAFSA also does not care if you do not have family that either can not or will not pay for your college. They make it almost impossible to go to college without taking out a loan.

My dad says it's because he makes too much money, but I'm not totally sure it's that's it. It seems like your parents are reasonably wealthy as well; do you know how that system works?

Hi, I’m currently at a trade school. I will be done July 31st. A lot of the scholarships I’m looking into have deadlines of July 20th and July 31st. Am I too late for them to apply towards my current education?

Hi, thank you very much for sharing! Here is a question bother me to invest time for applying scholarship. Will applying for scholarships distract study and maintain a high GPA or it is more likely to help you with better performance on study?

My undergrad years, my dad didn't claim me ok nly my mother. My biological father passed when I was 15, he was also in the military back in the day. Therefore, I received a Pell Grant (free, based off my mother's income) which ONLY paid for my classes. I paid for my books out of pocket and paid for my summer classes out of pocket. I also worked part time during my undergrad years + had a side hustle. I would ALSO go to the Fin Aid office to talk to people about different Grant's that were available due to my GPA (3.0/3.5 GPA/4.0). The program I was in also offered a semester scholarship for my GPA. The fact that one of my parents was a deceased vet provided a grant. Undergrad there are PLENTY of scholarships and grants.
For my master's program am in another state. There are scholarships and Grants I don't qualify for since this is my 1st semester, also Assistantships that I cannot apply for my first yr on this campus.
Grad school is a little more limited.
If you can work on campus that is your best bet, many of the Assistantship and Graduate Assistantships will pay for a semester tuition 2-6k. Some programs only offer this to a student that has been in the program longer. Just depends. For me that is the case, I haven't been there long.
    Check out this webside: www.discover.com/student-loans/college-planning/scholarships/directory/general
There is a list of some you can apply for, some deadlines have passed but keep on trying!

If your parents are low income and youre a minority, apply for the gates scholarship. Best decision you'll make.

I am so upset that my best friend is not going to college with me. We are supposed to move-in in three days and she just told me she's had a change of plans because she can't afford it and was embarrassed. It literally broke my heart when she told me that. Now I'm kinda depressed and don't want to go, even though I'm lucky enough to afford it. 😭💔

Kelly Gonzalez Hope she's going to be ok. I'm dying knowing I may not be able to go due to money problems. I might as well die irl. This life hasn't gone well. Maybe the next will be better.

Grumpy Cat She is doing well, she ended up going to a community college, which is a great alternative! I would have went too if I didn't get accepted. Good luck to you!😁

If you work full time and have bills you wont get much pell grants. I suggest cleping classes and finding scholarships or finding a college that offer tuition waivers.
