I started mine in May of 2023 because my wife was giving birth to our daughter that July. So, I wanted my locs to grow with her and my journey of becoming a father. We a year in and lovin it.
Ppl are cutting them, combing them out because they aren’t dedicated to the lifestyle. Locs are not a trend , they have a deeper meaning. Which is why you should never let anyone touch your hair , cause hair holds energy. It’s our strength, just like the story in the Bible with Sampson
Grew my locs to shoulder length in 2 years hasn’t been easy but I don’t see myself going back at all that’s for sure too much research and hard work went into it. Feels like a long term relationship
I love everything locs!! I love how people are embracing their natural hair. My son has been loc'd for 10 years and still going strong. I am on my second set because I wanted to go smaller and have now been loc'd for 5 years and I love my imperfect but perfect for me locs. I have friends and several other family members who are loc'd and when I tell you everyones locs are different and unique and just so beautiful. I don't ever see locs not being a thing or going out of style.
I've noticed my locs made me wsier, and they encourage me to be a better person. I sunbathe my locs; it gives me spiritual awareness. The longer they grow, the more powerful my aura is. This is not a trend, this is a lifestyle❤

It’s crazy because my locs just made 7 years in June 2024. When I started mines back in 2017 that was around the time that many dudes started cutting off the high top hair style with fades and going for waves. Then when people caught on to locs about 2-3 years ago and I seen most people just wearing it as a trend. Now the trend is starting to die down and it’s interesting to watch how people in general follow the next popular thing and watch it all die down and repeat again
I actually cut mine in March of this year, but had them since Nov 2010 shortly after leaving the military. I cut mine because was just simply over the look. They were long, beautiful and also killing my neck. Beautiful as they were, still they became uncomfortable and I noticed the tension from having heavy locs will make your hair thin in certain areas. I loved my loc journey ❤ Now it’s time for something new! Good luck to you on your journey.
I cut my locs after growing them for 7 years. There were many reasons why, but my main reason was because as tall built black man, people treated me like I was a threat. Another big reason is dreads /locs rip out your hair over time causing tension alopecia. Also everyone has them so they don’t feel unique any longer
To combat the alopecia just trim them, separate the locs into thinner strands or have them in a protective style instead of a free dangling dread style.
Thank you King Bril, your locs are super fly and locs will never go out of style! It's like infinity at this point what you can do with locs. It's like regular hair, just thicker strands lol 💯🔥🔥🔥
Locs are apart of “CULTURE” in Florida. Wicks go back into Seminole culture, Seminole culture goes back into Native American culture, that culture goes back into Amerindian and Mesoamerican cultures. It’s only going out of style with people who aren’t from southern cultures IF IT IS going out of style. I hated seeing people make a wave out of it anyway. Afro locs, wicks and other forms of locs is really part of how a lot of spiritualities in Florida meaning it’s “apart of them”. It’s not just fashion. That’s why folks don’t care what people say about their hair in Florida or other southern states who have the same culture. Seminole John Horse was sketched with wicks, 100 years before him at the battle of fort Moses some of the blacks or Seminoles at that fort were shown with locs, 100 years before them the Spanish and English wrote that some of the blacks down here had “hair like snakes”. We did not get our culture from no “bob Marley” or Caribs.
@@smelly1060 Yes Caribs because people think Caribs influenced Americans in Florida to grow locs. Only specific Caribs practice loc culture. It’s not even for all Caribs. Especially those who are mostly west African or euro African descendant. Caribs like Haitians did not have a culture of loc’n hair, which is comical because people call’d wicks Kodak dreads for a short time until people corrected them. Kodak lives in our culture. In fact Haitian elders HATE seeing them loc their hair just like a lot of Africans hate seeing their kids loc their hair when they’re assimilating into American culture. While the Rasta movement got popular in the 1940-60’s it was a time where even the Jamaican Americans didn’t even like locs. It’s pure comedy seeing all these videos of Haitian and African parents cheering on TikTok when their kids cut their locs or wicks but people were saying we got it from them.
Locs aren't a style to me. It's more of a statement. I have locs because i can be natural and low maintenance. I want to be natural because i feel like wearing a perm or flatiron is me being what I'm not.
I think its the lack of experienced locticians. They are coloring peoples hair too early and people retwist too often. Retwisting and getting haircuts add up in price too! On top of breakage if they are not maintained properly. I combed mine out because I got tired of bad stylists.
I comb out my locs simply because every time I got a haircut the barber kept nipping at the sides making them weak and thin. I’m going to start over and get a full set this time

Had my locks for 9 years since i was 13, but I decided to cut em back in January because I feel like I’ve mastered that hairstyle. Anything you can name with locs I’ve pretty much done it. Im currently 5 months and some change growing my hair back with the intent to get braids
I grew mine up to 5yrs, loved them with every morsel of my soul 🙏🏾. But i just recently cut them yesterday just to give me a different feeling of something new. I had already had long hair to begin with, just decided to give it a break. The maintenance and upkeep is why i decided to take a break, i have very healthy curly hair ❤. I love them and miss them already. But my new journey awaits me ❤. Maybe going into next year ill decide to go back, who knows 😊. Good luck to everyone on their loc journey ❤
I personally think alot of folks got them because they were trendy and popping on social media. Especially for a lot of folks coming out of the pandemic, our hair had grown to a certain length, and the only options were to cut it, braid it, or loc it up. But I mostly think people wanted to fit in with the loc movement. Unfortunately some people are followers, so if they see alot of people doing something, they want to do the same, which is also why so many people sre cutting theirs around the same time. Soon there will be another hair "trend" and people will jump on the bandwagon for a few years just like locs these past few years, cut it, and jump on the next trend. I personally think folks are gonna move en masse to waves and low cut faded styles. I personally am about to rrstart my loc journey. Not because I see everyone else cutting them, but because i've had hightop locs for 6 years and am ready for a full head.
To tell you the truth locks aren't a style, it's a religious statement which you touched in. A lot of people are cutting off their locks because they are starting to go bald from the twisting ripping out their hair follicles.
Hey yo! Them fools who have commercial dreads and fashion will be cutting off their dreads but as far as the really real dreadlock heads, that stuff runs way too deep!!! It is our way of being from the very beginning of creation . I wear my locks with pride, understanding and my culture. Blessed I am!!!
i think ppl underestimate the maintenance that goes into long hairstyles and after a while it becomes burdensome, ppl may think dreadlocs are easy to maintain but you have to put in a lot of work otherwise they can go bad
It’s different for everybody. Not everyone has the same hair texture that can just go bad easily, what products you use matters aswell, a retwist every 2 weeks would do the trick which is nothing
Cut mine in April man, I started w a high top and started growing out the sides for a bit. I realized that by the time The sides caught up to the top, I could have restarted my entire journey and been good. Imma rock the fro for a bit before I start them up again.
I let my hair freeform. Got a small afro that is locking up. I feel like it’s just like everything else in life, things come and go. Some say hair carries certain energies and other things. But people are doing what’s happy for them. That’s all you can do
I cut my loc's in January after 7 years , I didn't expect them to grow as long as they did , I couldn't take it anymore 😂 but I had a great time with them , I might go back one day.
I’m glad they’re cutting them tbh. My inspiration was in the 90s from the Rastafarians. I never saw it as just a hairstyle so it always bothered me that low vibrational people were getting them as a trendy hairstyle. The locs with a lineup look was always silly to me
Ive had locs for about a year and a half. I usually keep 360 waves, but I would grow my hair out every now and then. I go back and forth about cutting them off, but i do like them. During that first year it was a pain trying not to get my hair wet or washing it too much to avoid unraveling. Now its not so bad given i can wash more often. I keep my styles up for a couple of months so maintaing hasn't been much of an issue.
I agree that's the most difficult part is not being able to wash them as often as you like. Also pulling them up. Once that first year passes, you are good.
Cut mine off recently, didn’t know it was a trend ending at the same time 😅 had them for 3 years, but yeah the was too much lint in mine and it’s basically impossible to clean it up unless you just dye your hair, also felt like I gathered a lot of energy I needed to let go, my advice wear that bonnet religiously and don’t be afraid to let go just cus you spent years on them
I have had my locs for almost 3 years! Decided to get them b/c I was tired of weaves and it made my edges very thin. I like having locs b/c as they get longer it gave me a more feminine look plus I like to keep them natural. I have only been sun kissing them for a brown sandy look. I want natural healthy locs so I’m not into super extreme styles. My loc journey has been low maintenance compared to when I was a loose natural. The only way I will go back is if I lose hair for medical/health reasons. Other than that, I’m in it till the end 😂😂❤
I love locs. I had sisterlocks for 4 years and cut them off in 2014. I had to cut mines because I was driving hours away to get them retightened. I loved the style. It was just expensive to maintain them back then. I just started locs in early 2024. I am for them and don't see them ever going out of style. I have had every hair style. Not big on heat. The silk presses are beautiful high maintenance. I am at peace with my locs. Very versatile and more low maintenance once they securely loc in.
Wonderful video. 🙌🏾 I loc’d when I lost my mom. 5 years later I cut them into a bob combed them out over 7 months. I’m not sure if I’ll restart or not yet. So, for now I’ll enjoy my coils ❤
I had locs since i was 7 yr old. I cut them when I turned 25 yrs old Now i am rocking braids after i start all over. It crazy how trend circles back. I cut mines bec i want a different style. When ever I get the itch for locs/dreads. i get two strands twist or box braids. I never had a receding hairline. all about how you take care of your hair and what you put in your body. Nothing like rocking a afro and many different styles. My locs was all the way to my waist at one point. Locs ran in the family which why i had them in first place.
Had locs for like 7 yrs. Cut mines cause they was gonna do hair folic drug test for CDL driving and I needed to pass lol ended up not being for me anyways but now I’m growing hair back out probably not gonna loc it back up for a long time. Want to do new styles like braids, fro, curls, Bantu knots. I do know the next set will be Freeform. Never again will I cut my hair for a job though.
yeah i agree but you can always combine your locs to make them thicker if you like! and as your hair mature they get thicker and healthier ! i have really curly hair so my biggest thing i have is that my end of my locs get curly but everyone is different! i love locs
I understand people are like "Oh but it's a lifestyle." No it isn't. Its just a way yo where your hair that has a deep confidence meter baked into it. With this hair type you will find out just how much you can take before returning to something you think you can "control". Locs (nothing to dread about em) have significant cultural ties as well. This hairstyle has been in our lineage since the dawn of time therefore it can never cease to exist. However, I do disapprove of people just getting the hair style (especially the instant locs) and they disposing of them off rip and then they say "Oh well i experienced a lock journey." What journey? You did that for fun, which isn't bad, but don't try and claim it like you know what struggling through bad hair feels like. [ For reference: I got my retwist done about 3 weeks ago and the first week after the retwist my hair got wet and it frizzed to the moon and back. In my 11 months of this it never looked so bad. But my next retwist is scheduled in about 2 weeks. Looking at this in the mirror is literal pain. But its my hair so ... We deal with it.]
I cut my dreadlocks off about a month ago I had them for about four years and I just wanted a new look and it seemed like everybody had dreadlocks so I just wanted to stand out I guess.
Crazy how i literally just combed out my locs and went back to cornrows a few days ago. For me i just feel like i was growing out my loc journey craze phase. I needed a change up. Plus i missed my old look.
I loc'd my hair bc I got tired of braids n combing out my fro. GA heat is terrible weather for an afro. I also think retwists are overrated. I think the best locs look more natural.
Yes locks are self limiting for sure… I mean what happens when they eventually hit the floor hahaha… the length and the heaviness of some locks causes a lot of downwards tension on the scalp so most Rasta’s I see nowadays have thinning hair at the front of their heads and sometimes throughout the scalp too.. Plus all the hat wearing / head coverings adds to the mix also… I mean I couldn’t just wear my hair in one style always and I like to have a choice on whether I wish to comb my hair so locks are definitely not my choice of style whether they’re real or faux ones.. But each to their own I’d say… If it works for you then that’s fine… just be as you are.. then and all that jazz hahah That’s all I got to say on this.. You’re welcome btw…. Cheers & Ciao ;)’
I’m considering cutting mine for a few reasons. Annoying to get comfortable sleeping. Washing and drying. Can’t swim or go the beach. Retwist take forever. Still love mine tho
….cutting them off because they don’t keep up the maintenance of’em or thinning out.when they get thin, just convert them to wickz before it’s too late ✊🏾💯
If they got them as a style of course their gonna get rid of them when its not trendy. After my first set i missed them so i started a 2nd set :3 and felt happy
Yh locs do hold energy. As a Rasta i have to cover my hair anytime im going out in public.. even if im home watching TV i have to cover it. Cause if I don't then (say for example) if im i go out in public, when I go back home my body would feel weird.. i realized that if Im around negative ppl then my body and mind would feel negative afterwards.. and my hair would get heated and frizzy and uncontrollable. Ill have to wash it. Cause if I don't ill become depressed. As soon as I wash it then I'll be bright as a bulb. These days im washing it every day cause the ppl are getting weirder and weirder.
I used to watch your channel when u had the curl routines . I had curls back then . But i mainly stick with waves these days. Never had locks bc ive just never been able to get past that ugly stage of hair . I always ended up cutn it
Have deep connection with my locks and now if get tried out with re twisting my locks. Might up getting wicks. I started with level 1 cut after my braids and now grew my hair since 2020 and started my journey on 2022 now shoulder length ups and down with my locks but they grew on me with the money spent can’t go back at all.

I loc’d when I lost my mom. 5 years later I cut them into a bob combed them out over 7 months. I’m not sure if I’ll restart or not yet. So, for now I’ll enjoy my coils ❤
I simply Love my locs. I find them to be easy to maintain.
You should make a video rating your subscriber’s hairstyles
I thought locs would be less maintenance. Lol i was wrong. But i don't regret this style its better than a lace front imo.
I cant see dreads going anywhere any time soon. Locs can literally make a 5/10 guy a solid 6.5
The only reason i decided to grow locs is because it's too damn expensive to keep getting haircuts.
I ain't everybody so i aint cutting mines just cuz somebody else doing it thats a follower mindset 😂
Crazy how i literally just combed out my locs and went back to cornrows a few days ago. For me i just feel like i was growing out my loc journey craze phase. I needed a change up. Plus i missed my old look.
I thinking about combining my locs out any tips I miss my cornrows and loose hair
Ignore the hate comments brother
Keep on going 💪🏽love the content 🔥🔥🔥
thank you bro, most of the haters don't watch just comment
I've been having locs for 17 years, way...... before the wave started, and I've been thinking about cutting them.
Dope video as always 🔥🔥🔥🔥.
Please drop a video of your loc journey
bet that
Cutting mine had mine for two years might do a video on mine
how can culture go out of style
Culture goes out of style all the time. High top fades are culture, ski masks are culture,
Yes, that shit played out. Gives Unk vibes.
Because is too much maintenance I have locks for over 10 years cut them all I felt so relief especially in the summer
In the end it's only hair. Your hair !
Back in the lates 90s and early 2000s was retwisting super popular ? All the locs looked like they were semifreeform
I was natural for about ten years, then i loc'd my hair. I made an informed decision.
Hell naw that not out of style, some could argue haircuts is out of style, or braids are out of style. I just started my journey.
I remember before the loc trend it was braids, then waves then the nappy fro look
I loc'd my hair bc I got tired of braids n combing out my fro. GA heat is terrible weather for an afro. I also think retwists are overrated. I think the best locs look more natural.
I live in St. Louis…. HELL NO ITS NOT OUT OF STYLE HERE!!! Literally EVERYONE and their entire families have Dreads
But each to their own I’d say… If it works for you then that’s fine… just be as you are.. then and all that jazz hahah
That’s all I got to say on this.. You’re welcome btw….
Cheers & Ciao ;)’
I’m considering cutting mine for a few reasons. Annoying to get comfortable sleeping. Washing and drying. Can’t swim or go the beach. Retwist take forever. Still love mine tho
You can swim and go to the beach. You just need to clarify after.
@@taleciaaa I don’t have time for that lol, i usually just chill on the sand anyway
Back then I used to get made fun of prior many years back later on seeing the same people who made fun of me now have the hair!
Of course i get this vid a week after getting my works 😭
lol
….cutting them off because they don’t keep up the maintenance of’em or thinning out.when they get thin, just convert them to wickz before it’s too late ✊🏾💯
Why does anyone care what’s in fashion… just do your own thing man fuck the trends
Been growing since the pandemic. I’m in too deep to turn back now. I do wanna cut it eventually. Just not now.
Im on that same wave but i didnt loc upp til September
Thank you for the history lesson fam
I haven't started my loc journey yet hair too short and I have a high top cut
If they got them as a style of course their gonna get rid of them when its not trendy. After my first set i missed them so i started a 2nd set :3 and felt happy
Cutting mine next week
lol damn
Had mine for 5 yrs but is was too much maintenance for me 🤷🏾♂️ like the video tho bro 🥂💯
no doubt my guy
I always ended up cutn it
Nice break down of locks up to current times....
My ends are snapping off and now they're all uneven. And it's stressing me out
This was really good!!
I’m not cutting mine gotta be your own individual vs following the crowd.
Have deep connection with my locks and now if get tried out with re twisting my locks. Might up getting wicks. I started with level 1 cut after my braids and now grew my hair since 2020 and started my journey on 2022 now shoulder length ups and down with my locks but they grew on me with the money spent can’t go back at all.
never cutting mine .. Sister locs 4 life
Us that cut them are growing them back lol
Only ones cutting em off is the ones following trends and those who just had em just to have em or they homies had em and wanted them too fr fr
Some people might change it up or they want to retire them
facts
Yo what up big dawg! i had locs 2 years cut em off now i’ll just grow a fro and get cornrows
natural hair movement didn't start on youtube it goes back to the Black Is Beautiful movement of the 60s and has had ebbs and flows
Wrong ! This is generational! Yes the boomers did the natural afro thing ! But that was more so a political statement 1960/1970! After that y’all conform to get jobs (perming hair) gen-X followed suit!
Then here come millennials via 2008 Obama era no longer going a long to get along ! Via wearing our hair natural we see it as innately beautiful that’s why it’s been going on for 20 years now it’s a systemic shift
A lot of people I know cut them because they break off a lot for some and end of with bald spots
I just cut mines yesterday after 6 years
Out of style? Nothing is ever out of style when you do what YOU want to do and don’t follow a crowd by following a trend.
