Audi and BMW have been engaged in a pitched fight over which would be the first to market with laser lighting technology. blog.caranddriver.com/bmw-beat...
people need to understand technology doesnt equal a better car, it just makes cars easier to sell. technology is biggest sales pitch for the 21st century, and this really goes with any product now and days. there are still very simple non technological important things to a car like blind spots, room, comfort, etc. basically it still has to be user friendly.
Personally new car HID's are freakin bright on low beams on coming, I get pissed because I think their hi beams are on but they arn't! Lazer, pretty freakin cool. But not needed. However IR or something to detect animals would be very useful.
"range of roughly double of LED high beam, yet they draw significantly less electrical energy" Why bother putting in normal beam, just put laser lights and make them dimmer so it's ok for oncoming cars.
Great headlights, sure... dont know about audi, but on bmw x5 or some other bmw suv they blind absolutely everyone even on low beam. Great for a driver of such car but not for everyone else. Such imperfect system.
OfficialMINIm I am not poor so I dont fit into your equation. Just explained that this system dazzles oncoming traffic. It shouldnt be this way because it is not safe. Same for my bi-xenons with automatic high beams. It dazzles you before it switches to low beams. It is also a bad system in favor of the owner of a car like this. Headlights shouldnt dazzle other drivers. Thats all I’ve got to say about this topic.
FisekJePan i wasn’t saying you were. What i meant is, people with money can always afford nicer things with more features and luxuries. I think it’s the same case here. People with more money to share can have nicer toys with more features. Features that benefit them but can be nuisance to others. But that’s not gonna stop them. that never has. You can buy dangerously quick, and stupidly loud cars so long as you have the money. but they often cause nuisance for others on the road right? I think its the same thing. I am too poor to buy one of these cars now. But if i could afford one, i would care about my own comfort and not others. That’s just my honesty
That is cool as fuck laser lights who knew this would happen. Just like when I was younger I would have never have guessed that we would have cell phones with the capability that the have today but shit. I wonder what crazy shit will be made in the next hundred years. But for some fucking reason we still don't have hover boards come the fuck on science Get on it son.
Okay, you've won this one BMW! Although it will be seen through time who will put it into more "conventional" models first. I don't expect to see many i8's much less the special R8's. But i kinda doubt that laser lights will make such an impact as LED headlights did, but it will perhaps become the norm like led's are today. We just need more competition.
My concern is that I don't want these lights to become too blue like the LED's. Anywhere between 4300k and 5000k is perfect because it puts more light on the road, the driver can see their own beam pattern better, and I never had experienced eye fatigue while driving. This "white as the sun" is pointless because, 1. The lights aren't intense enough to look white and 2. The ratio across the whole light spectrum isn't the same as the sun. My point is, the consumers buying the lights are stuck with the color and these lights are just way too blue, reminding me of shitty hid bulbs off of eBay... Like I'm sure that's exactly what all this amazing engineering should result to, and what the consumers buying led and laser headlights want. "No, no, no, let's not give our consumers who pay more to see more natural light and color at night". I just hope people will see right through this "color temp eye anxiety eliminating" fad. Even if it isn't a fad and it does help, at least let the consumer decide their own color temperature through the idrive and MMC systems.
Sorry but who the hell needs to see 600M up the road? It takes 15 seconds at highway speeds to even get there. Either way it sounds like a lot of us Americans will be importing the euro headlights soon.
Ummmm this is all just a publicity stunt. Even Audi's chief lighting engineer has acknowledged that these are not ready for prime time, and that it will be another 10-20 years before they are production viable. Also he has stated that currently they are less efficient that LED based lighting.
Great! ...another meaningless gizmo on modern cars that is going to go bad and be stupidly expensive to fix. Just like automatic windshield wipers, blind spot detection and nitrogen filled tires.
How are nitrogen filled tires expensive? My tires have nitrogen in them, and it cost about $20, and that's in Africa. The top up is even free, and available at many gas stations.
At normal speeds nitrogen filled tires are pointless. Yes at crazy high speeds the tire pressure will be more stable, but at any normal speed it makes no difference. Nothing worth paying extra for or spending time on for any non race car.
Morten Ramsing Nitrogen also leaks out much slower than normal air, and doesn't contain moisture which can help prevent corrosion. Compared to the cost of new tires it's pretty cheap.
The moisture in normal air is not enough to cause any oxidization of alu rims, the coating of the rims will prevent any oxidization of the rims. If you have a hole in your tire you will have a flat, again the difference is so little that it doesn't matter.
Morten Ramsing Normal air is 80% nitrogen. The reason they use it in racing is to prevent fires caused by high-pressure air with oxygen in it. There's no reason to put nitrogen in regular tires other then wankery.
Juan Pablo sorry to hear that man! I'v always loved the way bmw's look, but i'v heard way to many bad things about reliability and I will probably never buy one unless that changes. e46 M3, sexy car tho!
Actually JD powers ranks BMW in the TOP 10 as most reliable in the last 5 years, only thing that people hate is that once warranty is over, they realize how expensive parts are, and automatically assume it's unreliable, other brands have same reliability issues as BMW except the competition is cheaper vs BMW parts!
+Juan Pablo maybe because you didn't Maintain it. My drives like brand new and never has any issues. E46 M3 is the most reliable car I have ever owned, I even owed a Honda Accord and I'll never do that again. I am at 96k miles and never selling it, I've seen E46 M3s running well at 300k on the M3 groups I am in.
We have no need for that the US. It would be just another toy for earring wearing Johnny douche bag to blind on coming drivers. I know they say they'll dim down for oncoming traffic but other than turning them off there's no way around it. There's nothing wrong high-intensity and led headlights they make , those already blinding bright and light the road ahead amazingly well. I can only imagine the cost of repairing or replacing these things. I'm sure they'll last a while but not forever.
Are you kidding me? Audi has taken things from BMW for the past 5 years. Just 2-3 years ago Audi vehicles looked nearly identicle to BMW cars. So much that even BMW nearly filed a lawsuit against Audi. Audi has taken BMW's famed HUD, design elements, and even some sensor technology I believe. Along with a list of other things. Its funny cause Audi had the nerve back in 2011 to say that by 2015 they would be the perfered luxury auto maker (while they where stealing BMW tech & design), yet its 2014 and they haven't even come remotely close to that, and BMW is still well on top of everybody in the game.
Myles Brown Yup, and the issue with Audi is the same with Mercedes. They put big horsepower engines on a chassis that can't even really take the power of the engine. Which led to some horrific chassis twisting stories! BMW is great because they perfectly balance everything in there cars to evenly and smothly work together to make "The Ultimate Driving Machine." While BMW does need to somewhat improve on there reliability they are way better that of there competitors, except for maybe Lexus when it comes to that.
So...the average driver here in America is too dumb to be able to have brighter lights? I believe it, I know people that don't even know that their car has high and low beams, let alone how to properly use them!
makes me hate my out dated, slow and far behind (on EVERYTHING) country just a liiiiiiiiiittle bit more than usual. It'd be nice to not hit deer. for once at night.
who cares who did it first? You try to see everything as a competition. And this one is useless and dangerous to the other drivers. There are limits to count as street legal.
This is what happens when audi cant just dig into the volkswagen passat parts bin and sell an overpriced VW and actually has to design, develop and manufacture themselves. Audi is commercially working wonders and respect on that area but a person who actually enjoys driving would not prefer an audi.
ryanmail2004 haha why you mad broo, you know inside that audi is for wives and guys who don't enjoy driving. you have bought an overpriced VW Passat and now are trying to protect its reputation online ahahahhaha
ryanmail2004 I own a 2004 mercedes..and everybody knows mercedes is the best. bmw at least has some respect, but an audi..just another golf or passat..
ryanmail2004 I'd never get an audi, I'd directly go to bmw dealer if I was to get something else. At least they don't sell me volkwagens wrapped in leather and screens. Ryannnnn stop wikipedia copy-pastinggg. btw, where you from? syria or turkey?
yesterday I saw an audi and the owner was searching was for his engine, it was placed SOOO further in-front of the wheels it was found in the trunk of the car in front
So technology that takes night driving closer to daylight is a bad thing is it? If people like you ran car manufactures we would all still have candles in lanterns on the front of our horseless carriages and do 10mph at night.
Silverdeamon92 I work during the night and on roads with no lights and I'm surrounded by all of these pompous douches with hid lights. The bright lights work great for them but I can't see for a damn.
Del Johnson no if people like myself was manufacturing cars there would be nothing but lightweight rwd cars with manual boxes, with reasonable headlights. And those who wouldn't like it shall suck it and ride the bus.
dieseldrift3406 So it's ok for you to produce something no one wants. But not for car makes to advance technology with something many of us benefit from.
And of course Audi had to copy yet again. "Forsprung durch technik" my ass! "Selling cars with angry faces with copied technology" should be the phrase.
2 of the Best car Manufacturers in history goin at it in Laser Headlights
Excellent video C&D! I had no idea this technology was working its way down the pipeline.
Stupid US laws. Hopefully they can bring them here. Also, I hate all the rules on Diesel cars here. I want Audi to bring their a4 wagon tdi here!!!!
What's the rules on diesel in the us?
maxxxxxxim Normal consumers have to pay a high rate for diesel due to idiotic laws created through lobbying by the trucking industry.
Zeeshan Sarfraz there are also different environmental regulations. I think we are bin 2 tier 2 and in Europe only tier 3 is required.
Hmm checked the BMW website, English, French and German, and can't find the laser light option anywhere, obviously it's not on sale yet
very nice video, super informative and helpful to understand the laser technology. liked it! :)
I WEAR MY SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT.
Very cool!
What is the soundtrack that's being used.
just amazing!
So dickheads who have set their headlights too high will be responsible for blinding even more drivers.
Nice vid
what about in canada?
Damn America! I wish the DOT will get with the times and update those Biblical regulations!
Pretty cool
Now people are gonna try to sue for radiation poisoning from headlights or some dumb sh*t...looks cool though.
Wow no doubt, the future is here!...and I still using halogen XD
I would love lights like that.
Great. Now every used Honda and Subaru is going to have a set of aftermarket laser headlights that do little other than blind oncoming traffic.
people need to understand technology doesnt equal a better car, it just makes cars easier to sell. technology is biggest sales pitch for the 21st century, and this really goes with any product now and days. there are still very simple non technological important things to a car like blind spots, room, comfort, etc. basically it still has to be user friendly.
Looks like I'll be moving to Germany. This is only one thing on a list of things the US won't allow.
Can't have guns in Germany.
NIce tech, what's the price?
About 10.000€
Oncoming car detection is dangerous. You are counting on your bright headlights, yet all of a sudden the light output is reduced by at least 50%.
Narrator sounds like my grandpa...lol
Xenon HID and LED lights are already good enough. Laser is overkill but who knows in the future.
Personally new car HID's are freakin bright on low beams on coming, I get pissed because I think their hi beams are on but they arn't! Lazer, pretty freakin cool. But not needed. However IR or something to detect animals would be very useful.
Laser lights are nice and all, but it will be a while before they make it to mass produced models.
I hate getting blinded by headlights.
I like it
Nice, These lights need to be adapted to light Aircraft.
the video is great but the high music is really annoying can't quiet hear the technical spent
shame that they missed this detail
"range of roughly double of LED high beam, yet they draw significantly less electrical energy" Why bother putting in normal beam, just put laser lights and make them dimmer so it's ok for oncoming cars.
that people hit deers because hell, you can't see them unless you have your bright lights on
Basically BMW got first to blinding everyone at night.
Strange how BMW and Audi are fighting over bragging rights instead of giving credit to the Japanese company that developed it.
Great headlights, sure... dont know about audi, but on bmw x5 or some other bmw suv they blind absolutely everyone even on low beam. Great for a driver of such car but not for everyone else. Such imperfect system.
The rich enjoys and the poor complains.
This is how it’s aways been.
OfficialMINIm I am not poor so I dont fit into your equation. Just explained that this system dazzles oncoming traffic. It shouldnt be this way because it is not safe. Don't lasers damage your retina (eyes)?!
i typed in laser. im intrigued
Great lights but unfortunately when the light sensor goes out detect other cars on the road they are not cheap to replace even with warranty lol
And that's why we can't have nice things...
I guess i'll be importing i8! :)
Unfortunately, you can't import the Euro version of this car to the US. If you do European Delivery(ED) option you will receive the NA spec vehicle.
Just import the light assembly, none-the-wiser ;) It will be the hottest underground upgrade amongst BMW & Audi owners.
So cal great freaking idea!!!
***** Im pretty sure this would be considered assault with a deadly weapon if you ever caused an accident with them
conn4m4n Im pretty sure you did not pay attention to the video before you made a baseless ignorant comment.. go ride your horse and buggy :)
That is cool as fuck laser lights who knew this would happen.
Just like when I was younger I would have never have guessed that we would have cell phones with the capability that the have today but shit.
I wonder what crazy shit will be made in the next hundred years.
But for some fucking reason we still don't have hover boards come the fuck on science
Get on it son.
how much did BMW pay C&D?
damn laws in the u.s. smh free country my ass
Looks like a law suit when you blind me coming at you.....or death when we hit head on...
Clearly didn't listen to the actual video
You clearly didn't listen to the video. They said when the car detects somebody coming from ahead they go back to normal LEDs.
so you're gunna sue someone for having normal LEDs? if that was possible id be getting sued every day lol
its the lasers that 'blind', which you just pointed out aren't in use when they detect someone
Ok. Nice but it is safe for humans eye? I mean maybe it's not possible to blind other drivers but pedestrians or cyclist may have a problem.
Okay, you've won this one BMW! Although it will be seen through time who will put it into more "conventional" models first. I don't expect to see many i8's much less the special R8's. ...AKA how BMW paid Car and Driver to promote their laser headlamps by lying that they've made a production car with it first..
was there a production car with laser lights before the i8?
Sorry but who the hell needs to see 600M up the road? It takes 15 seconds at highway speeds to even get there.
Either way it sounds like a lot of us Americans will be importing the euro headlights soon.

Beat? Lol there is a special R8 limited edition coming out with laser headlight aswell.
Seriously neither "Invented" it. They both use osram as a supplier and partner.
What's the point of laser headlights if you can't use them to blind people...
Up urs audi
Great! ...another meaningless gizmo on modern cars that is going to go bad and be stupidly expensive to fix. Just like automatic windshield wipers, blind spot detection and nitrogen filled tires.

3:24 all halogen, led, and xenons are downgraded for USA. lol that sucks.
Hey BMW, how about you start earning bragging rights for making more reliable cars...That'd be great!
Haha I agree I sold my e46 m3, couldn't go 1000 miles without something breaking on the damn thing
Juan Pablo sorry to hear that man! I'v always loved the way bmw's look, but i'v heard way to many bad things about reliability and I will probably never buy one unless that changes. e46 M3, sexy car tho!

RIP Eyes, LED and Xenons yet explode your eyes because the automatic lights are shitty.
We have no need for that the US. It would be just another toy for earring wearing Johnny douche bag to blind on coming drivers. yay now i get to be blinded by laser lights, as if halogen was not bad enouph
millicandelas*
yep BMW drivers become ever more like-able

Pffff well said, and moreover everything get break in audi after 3 years, shitty car...

Prem Rush Chassis twisting. Haha Bullshit.
+Prem Rush "Cute" - RS7/ R8 LMX
and it takes only a year to break, for BMW..!
So...the average driver here in America is too dumb to be able to have brighter lights? I believe it, I know people that don't even know that their car has high and low beams, let alone how to properly use them!

ryanmail2004 I favourited your comment by the way, yesterday you told me you care about getting up votes.
Fake !! They work together to buildt it.
If anyone seriously needs cars with freaking laser headlights, they really shouldn't be on the road during night time.
Right. And obviously you must work late into the night and drive through rural B roads.
So technology that takes night driving closer to daylight is a bad thing is it? If people like you ran car manufactures we would all still have candles in lanterns on the front of our horseless carriages and do 10mph at night.

Why does this matter? (Didnt watch btw cause i dont think it matters)
Oh I see, you thought it mattered so little that you actually bothered to click on the video and comment on it. Because f*ck logic.
And of course Audi had to copy yet again. "Forsprung durch technik" my ass! "Selling cars with angry faces with copied technology" should be the phrase.
I like it
