While shipboard working the gulf oil spill, I learned that wrapping the rope around your hand to get a better grip, is a big time "no no". It's a good way to badly injure your hand. That is the real reason for this knot. By attaching a tool, you can easily free yourself of the line if something goes wrong, in addition to providing more grip.
The marlinspike hitch is also used to tighten seizing being wrapped around large diameter rope. The hitch is put on the end of the marlinspike, then using the large rope as a fulcrum, the the marlinespike levers the tarred marline (two strand hemp) around the large rope.

Your videos are excellent. Thank you.
Glad you like them! Rock on!
Thanks for the clear and concise explaination!
Glad it was helpful!
I've watched 20 marlin spike videos. Tie a wrench or screwdriver to pull my rope tight? Genius! Thanks!
Great job on the Snap-On tools!!!
Glad to see you used a Snap-on wrench instead of a Garbage Freight peanut butter wrench .
It's also helpful in hanging a hammock. Thanks!

That's so cool.
Tranks, from Argentina.

For when your plastic handle breaks on pull start lawnmower and all you have is a string.
Smart.
Marlinspike hitches used in a sheepshank instead of half hitches will allow it to hold even when the line is not under tension.
Nice.
Happy to share keep up the good work and thanks for the video.
Rock on!
I had watched half the vid before realizing this as the slipknot I use for stringlines in my job.
I didn't even realize it until you said it. Marlin spike is just a slipknot
Very helpful Thanks
Thank You again.

If I am pulling something ,will this knot tighten up so much that I can't u loosen ?
Edward Aguilar Just push the top of the knot back to release.

Are you traveling from the east or the west?
So its a slip knot....?

Why not clove hitch
Different knots for different tasks.
Lol. That's an ironworkers bullpin, not a marlin spike.
Uh oh. Busted.
End of a spud wrench ?
