50+ years ago my grandfather saw this game being played at the CNE in Toronto. He thought the board looked pretty simple to make, so he went home and made one! He played with my dad and my uncle all the time and they all got pretty good at it. Growing up, my brother, sister and I would spend hours and hours playing this together. And today, 50+ years later, we went to my grandparents house for my dad's birthday. My dad had the idea to get the table out, and my 6 year old son got to learn as well. Amazingly he picked it up super quick and shot a 54! The best I could do today was 48! For my dad it was like riding a bike and he shot 80 with ease! Long story short, the fun and competition that this game delivers is hard to beat. I think the attraction comes from its simplicity, but it takes great skill to score high! Edit: This video surprised me, I didn't know it's played with 30 pucks! We have only ever played with 20 because that's how many my grandfather made, so we thought that highest possible score was 100 haha. Today we actually played with 19 because one is missing, so we would just return the first missed puck.
If you get the opportunity...try to buy an official sjoelbak. Reason for this is that my brother also made a sjoelbak with pucks and in hindsight the pockets were just a little bit too large! So we thought we could play well, until we bought an official competition sjoelbak !! It became a lot more difficult..., but it made us also more competitive. It may be a very old 'board' game but every Dutch household has a sjoelbak! Talk about about 'culture;... forget the stroopwafels, the windmills and the tulips..., it is The Sjoelbak! Regards, Emiel
We just got the game and started playing straight away. The sjoelbak we ordered is just like the one in the video. It's very well made and it's a high quality, beautiful, durable product. I can't wait to introduce the game to my 10-year old daughter!
I just bought one of these exact tables for my family for Christmas. We live in the US and I had some friends introduce me to this game at their house years ago and we really enjoyed it. I noticed in your video, after folding the board closed, the lady has to put it under her arm to carry it. Would it be possible or feasible to add some kind of handle to carry without detracting from any structural issues to the game? If so, was just a thought and or suggestion. Thank you for this video as I could not remember the name until I did research and how the rules and scoring go. I highly recommend this for anyone who likes to socialize with friends and family for hours of fun.
Thanks for this great video! Just got the "Dutch Shuffleboard" game app for my android phone (by True Craving) Works great. Looking forward to ordering one of your boards. (Being half Dutch maybe I should order the folding one!)
Nice, but some incorrect information: "sjoelbak" comes from the Frisian "sjoeltafel" and "sjoelen" from the Frisian word "sjoele/sjoelje". A "bok" is no freebie. If a puck lands on another puck, you're not allowed to throw that puck again.

sorry hoor, maar sjoelen is van oorsprong Fries en komt van het Friese woord sjoelje wat slepen betekend niet hollands
