Hi Matt, yes there are a lot of expenses with watercolour! You could get single full sheets from your local art supplies then cut them up into smaller pieces but most decent papers cost a bit!! Good luck!! I buy in bulk when they are on sale but that is a chunk of money at the time! 👍
+Stacy Hannon hi Stacy! Glad you liked the painting! I don’t do much holding a cold beer by the water while fishing these days as I have two young kids but it is something that is just the best! When it warms up round here I’ll have to go fishing! 👍
Scott Swinson I don’t drink often either but your painting made me think of a cold beer and fishing lol. Aside from painting, fishing is my favorite thing to do. Last weekend I caught Nine catfish that are now in my freezer for a fish and chips meal very soon. There is something about catching your own meal that is just so satisfying! And I prefer to clean them myself. How old are your kids? Do they go fishing with you? I have four boys ages 15 to 22. I also have a four year old grandson and two year old grand daughter that I am teaching watercolors to. It’s such a fun way to get extra quality time with them. Hope you and yours have a beautiful week.
+Stacy Hannon that’s a great catch! My kids are 5 and 3. We haven’t had a fishing trip yet....will have to do that when the weather warms up! Happy painting! 😀🖼
Thank you Scott, exactly what I needed as having trouble returning to much loved watercolour after experimenting with soft pastels and oils. Reminded me how important it is to retain the white.
June Mackenzie hi June! Glad you liked the video! I only really know watercolour intimately and really love the medium! If you would like me to paint anything in particular let me know! Thanks for watching! 🙏
Hi Dan, I am using Rives BFK etching paper most of the time. I buy 280gsm full sheets from Melbourne etching supplies in Australia. It is lovely paper made in France but you could use any watercolour paper of a decent quality at least 280gsm. Thanks for watching! 👍
Hi Francine, I try not to! Only when I paint really big do I stretch my paper. It does sometimes buckle a small amount but for most paintings it’s all good! Thanks! I do love painting seascapes this long landscape orientation! 👍🙏
Hi Nicky, welcome to watercolour. I still remember how excited I was at the age of 12 being introduced to watercolour and some of the things it could do by Tony Smibert. It is a beautiful medium that does not have to be hard or scary if you get to know it well and understand how it works. Once you understand that you can go in any direction you choose! Thanks for watching! Any questions you have feel free to ask! Good luck and happy painting! 👍🙏
Hi Andrew! Glad you like it! I do love painting this size and orientation! It is what I have done a lot of over the years! You get to know the space on the paper, the brush sizes etc will have to do another one like this tonight! 👍
I never know what to say. Your work is absolutely gorgeous. Don’t change a thing.

Hi, I'm new to watercolours and loving learning from your videos. Doesn't the razor blade damage the paper when you scratch out the highlights?

If you don't go too deep and actually tear it, it's fine.
Really love this.
