I had no idea this was how to beat it lol, I tried everything with emotions but he never dropped his guard. I ended up sorta cheesing it by just shooting him with big rubber bands since they always hit for a fixed amount of damage making it an extremely easy fight.
So how to beat that fight without using the rubber bands every turn is by listening to when Space Ex Husband is recalling a memory then that’s the key to do a memory. Hence if says: “It’s Sweetheart but she’s breaking all my stuff!” or something like that that’s your key to inflict the anger emotion on him. This applies for all emotions.

I tried the BST strat of going all happy for the crits, realized it wasn't working since he actually did legit damage, decided to make him angry so we could wreck him That FAILED because it was the wrong emotion and he made us all angry, I made him sad, we wrecked him, he made us all sad, I made him happy, we all wrecked him. I wasn't able to tell why people say he's hard.
you know, i could do this, or i could just make him angry and use run and gun (you can attempt to force an emotion by wating a turn and not giving him the one that he can get on that turn)
You gotta match the emotion you give him with the memory he's having. If he has a sad memory, then you just give him the sad emotion. If he has a memory abouf something that makes him happy, give him the happy emotion. Same with angry.

Sweetheart treating spaceboy like shit = anger
Sweetheart and spaceboy spending time together = happy
Spaceboy being lonely = sadness
