- Regardless of your ability on your instrument, Andy Brown says you can say something profound with it. Starting simple and developing that idea is better than getting sucked into what might be an overly academic approach to making music.
Andy Brown has made nine albums as a leader or co-leader and appears on at least nine others as a sideman. He plays regularly across Chicago, including weekly gigs of solo guitar at the Green Mill, and leading his quartet at Andy’s Jazz Club in the loop.

Andy Brown throwing down…. Speaking the truth, Brother!
I agree wholeheartedly with Andy's thoughts here!
Totally agree .. i was arguing my point about keeping it simple and stay with a few ideas and really use it and develop it
This was inspiring thank you!!
Glad you like!
I agree with the main point but he lost me at "everything in jazz, to me, is so neurotic and dysfunctional". What an incredibly bold statement that makes him sound like he doesn't know where the heat is in the current jazz scene. Jazz is such a vast spectrum it's unfair to be that reductive. I'll add that there is no one way to listen to music so, while I respect his point of view, I'll encourage him to revise it. The "does the waiter tap his foot?" argument/question is void of substance. The guy/girl is listening to jazz 24/7 at his job so he's not in the same headspace as the audience nor the players.
I'd like to know which jazz musicians/bands he already went to see live. Some stuff are esoteric, of course but some cats are effortlessly grooving and swinging. I've been listening to jazz since high school before even knowing what a major chord was and would sing any solos from Dave Brubeck's Time Out album.
Sorry but I had to dislike even though I agree with some of his statements.
It's true what you say. Jazz is a vast spectrum, and there's plenty if room for different perspectives. Thanks for watching and sharing your valuable point of view. You comments are welcome here.
He’s talking less about jazz and more about jazz education
This is great! Thank you Andy and Player to Player. Presenting simple melodic ideas is a great way to connect with the audience and your own heart.
Glad you enjoyed it!
