I understand John's frustration in waiting for a game and I also understand Bommel wanting to abort. Playing someone 700 points higher is very much like just playing an engine. As far as he was concerned, I'm fairly sure he considered the outcome inevitable and Bommel didn't feel like getting pommelled.
Wow you have the best memory ever. I can't believe you remembered the guy let alone the game you played almost 200 games ago. Great game btw. Instructive as always :)
It would be cool if you'd play something more adventurous versus such a low rated opponent (compared to you I mean) like for exemple a Blackmar Diemer gambit or Stonewall attack just for multeity's sake. I don't want to criticize your video's in a negative way, you give, in any case, very instructional comments and I will always like them and advertise your channel.
These games are totally different! In standart chess #80 Bommel played 7... 0-0, 8... c6 But now absolutely different story - 7... c6, 8... 0-0 Good game, John! Good luck in the coming tournaments!
+Pi Niata I've been holding off on doing this because I play over-the-board tournaments and it makes it easier for an opponent to prepare against me by simply grabbing the PGN. But I may change this policy going forward!
The strength of your game amazes me sometimes. Personally, I would feel hesitant to have the knight on c5 guarding both the a4 and e4 pawns but damn is it ever aesthetic!
I would like to see you finish climbing the rating ladder or at least the 2000-2200 step. I am stuck 2016. :-) Waiting for chessable, will advertise on the Castle site
gg John. do you agree that Kxa5 was not necessary? the pawn on a5 is fixed and would not go anywhere. I thought of supporting the center pawns then go for a5
Regarding instructional "value": Yes! Converting a one-pawn-up position is relevant to all of us, regardless of rating or skill level. I watched the initial blitz-tounament in Zürich last night: Anand, Kramnik, Shirov, Nakamura, Aronian, Giri ... it just doesn't get any tougher than that ... except of course Magnum Carlsen and a few more ... but they were blundering all over the place! No wonder ... was it 4 minutes + 10 or something? To convert even a piece up is or can be tough for these guys at that time limit ... considering the denfensive skills of the opponents! So yes: ALL your videos are beneficial! Explaining your thought processes like practically no one else is GOLD! (And yes: You keep up the pace of 50 subscribers per day! ;O) )
Its true a lot of people wish John would play on chess.com or lichess for the 15 minute games, but these games are instructive in a "climbing the rating ladder" kind of way. Since I assume most of us aren't rated 2000+, these games show us how to capitalize on common mistakes made by lower rated players, and so are valuable in their own right.
+sterlinguini i like watching these games too because john demonstrates why seemingly reasonable moves can be mistakes. this game was probably a little less instructive given how early the blunder occurred but usually they're very educational, at least for me, as i make a lot of the same mistakes! :)
+James McConville I understand, but only true because it's the random ICC pool. even longer time controls verse higher rated opponents would be possible if he switched to lichess or any site really and just put a seek out. I'm sure a twitter announcement would see tons of players lining up. of course games verse lower rated players can be very instructive, but they are usually shorter and more one sided because John isn't really put to the test. over all these games are much less interesting I feel, and even though I want to see longer games I skip over games like today after seeing the rating.
+sterlinguini I may switch to Chess.com and/or lichess for these Standard games because the ICC pool has been particularly dry in the last couple months.
I like your explanation that keeping tension in the position rather than trading gives lower-rated players a chance to go wrong. I think this is how Magnus Carlsen plays ... against 2700s.
I am that kinda of player who plays either really well really good. You know one day i beat 2200 rated player the next day i get crushed by a 400 rated player its really weird
Why would you want to abort lol? A chance to play against someone that good, who records these games, which you can view afterwards and see how their analysis differs from yours. Someone who tells you exactly where you made mistakes how you could've played better. Yeah chances are 99.8 per cent that you're going to lose, but chess is about getting better and losing will teach you more than winning. Just my opinion.
+Leon Stuij Agreed. However, I do think some people are genuinely looking for a competitive game against some one their own rating with no frills attached, so I can understand where Bommel is coming from.

Sneaky engines with the tricky knight maneuvers, haha. Entertaining game!

Would there be any possibility of you adding the pgn of your games to your videos John? That'd be awesome.
+Pi Niata I've been holding off on doing this because I play over-the-board tournaments and it makes it easier for an opponent to prepare against me by simply grabbing the PGN. But I may change this policy going forward!
John Bartholomew Right! Makes sense! Should you change that policy one day, let us/me know :D.
+Pi Niata Will do :)

That game was not resign-worthy in my opinion. You can tell he wanted nothing to do with John right from the start haha.

Maybe he was trying to do us a favor and get you some stronger competition to film haha
Agree. I have no desire to watch games vs such low players, personally.

+sterlinguini It's very difficult to get high rated opponents in the 15min pool on ICC

Sigue así John!
good luck in the tournament....!
CHESSABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the same feeling when watching the game. black played in a way that was interesting.
maybe he doesn't like playing against d4 lol
john you are rated 2416. im sure not many people want to play you joking. very intimidating.
i went from being 1780 rated to 1340 in today on icc yay
I'm impressed that you're happy about that, torgeir! Rock on :)
I am that kinda of player who plays either really well really good. You know one day i beat 2200 rated player the next day i get crushed by a 400 rated player its really weird
+torgeir “torgeir03” HD Like Vishy Anand!
its not a shame being afraid of chess master
Haha here's the game with the same line you had against him:

Why do you always says hi guys? Maybe women are watching you:))
+Evren Ersoy "Hey guys" is pretty non-gender specific; at least in the US.
Why would you want to abort when you can get what basically is a free lesson from John from his analysis?
You have many likes on your HORDE CHESS comment...
See if you want to play it
