    I like that advice, don't just move to move, take a 10 second look around, it sounds so simple but we all make that quick move and its like "oh no"!

      +Tom Smith Definitely - and I'm certainly not immune either :) The best we can do is get in the habit of blunder-checking and hope for the best!

    25,000 bullet games with a 1000 rating seems odd when his 5-minute and 15-minute ratings are 1700-1900. Anyway thanks for the upload.

    Nice in-game and after the game analysis! Very helpful for us!

    Hey John, is there any merit to developing the bishop to a6 a few moves earlier (I was thinking move 12)? Or is seizing the open file with the rook a stronger idea/does it not make any real difference in the order of moves?

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  8 лет назад +1

      +Patrick Arthur I wanted to stay a bit more flexible with the bishop. ...Rb8, on the other hand, felt like a necessary move, so I was happy to play that. But keeping the bishop back could have some value, e.g. maybe I'd like to play ...a7-a5 and then ...Bc8-a6.

    In this game you continued the theme of discussing how these lower rated opponents make decent/okay moves without an overarching plan. It got me to thinking: you seem to be able to look at a position and come up with a plan for how to attack a weakness or achieve an important pawn break. Have you thought about doing a more general discussion as to how to develop your analytical ability? How to spot the best pawn break or the key weakness in the opponent's position?

    I watched the first 10 seconds or something and thought this was the same as a video you did ~ a week ago and closed the tab. Then I realized it had been uploaded 3 minutes ago so I had to skip ahead briefly to make sure it was different xD

    Nice game, but maybe you’re a bit harsh on santaneco. He did have a plan, a king-side attack supported by bishop/queen battery, and it was when he focused on his plan (h4) instead of reacting to what you were doing that his position collapsed!

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  8 лет назад +1

      Possibly, though the overall pace of his play and quality of moves didn't indicate much effort on White's part. I feel like he could have played much better - especially if he had used more than 1/3 of his time. I feel I have to point out the poor time management especially.

      @capt-morgan276 8 лет назад +1

      +Mark Ritchie Especially a move like 18. Kxf1 - he played that instantly, without even thinking. He took exactly two seconds on that move!! It ended up costing him later due to a timely Qa6+. A move like Kxf1 should be heavily criticized, in accordance with other time mis-management moves.

    • @capt-morgan276
      @capt-morgan276 8 лет назад +1

      +Mark Ritchie Something else I think deserves mentioning - it's something I learned from John and noticed it from other titled players. They look at positions as objectively as possible, so he's not so much being "harsh" on santaneco personally, but the given position at hand. You notice things like "White played... and if Black plays... then White has..." etc., the leaving out of the opponents name indicates to me they're focused on the whole board, and much less so the opponent... if that makes sense. Who said it, "Play the position, not the opponent." :)

    • @markritchie8874
      @markritchie8874 8 лет назад

      +CivilianArms Playing or not playing the opponent isn't at issue here, and anyway as it happens John does play the opponent to some extent - listen to his comment at 9:20 of Standard Chess no. 19 for example.

    • @markritchie8874
      @markritchie8874 8 лет назад

      +CivilianArms Kxf1 not really such a bad move. As John said, it was understandable that he wanted to keep the knight in place for the kingside attack that was clearly his plan. If he'd stared at the board for a minute I'm sure he'd still have played Kxf1. What lost the game wasn't poor time management, or Kxf1, but the blunder 22 Qc1. Yes, at that point he should have calculated better and thought longer, but overall his time management was good.

    I've notice the sound of the occasional electrical discharge in these videos. Could mean your computer is poorly grounded.

    Yowza John! 22. Qc1? Qa6+ 23. K-moves Nxd4! is crushing... You mentioned the possible discovery during the game, but I think it's indeed difficult to see that Bg7 indirectly defends Rb2, tactically. Ah - yes, you found it in the postmortem. Cheers!

    On 13:18, if 23 ... Rxb2, 24 Qxa3 Rxd1, isn't that winning for white? I mean, two rooks for the queen?

    • @colinvandermeer
      @colinvandermeer 8 лет назад

      +Zvezda uvek u srcu Do you mean Rxb1..? Otherwise the rook on b2 would block Qxa3. That's certainly possible, but could give unnecessary counter chances imo

    • @zvezdauvekusrcu7709

    • @JohnBartholomewChess

      +Zvezda uvek u srcu Agreed with Colin: possible, but it creates an imbalance in the position that Black may not want to allow.

    John, I would really like to get a 15 minute game against you on ICC. What time do you usually enter the pool? I'm ryksuguskyr on ICC and rated 2000.

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  8 лет назад

      +Raudavatn Hey, Raudavatan - it really depends. I mostly play in the evenings US times, but truth be told I'm often pressed for recording time so I just squeeze it in when I can. But the evenings on the days I record this time control are usually when I'm most likely to be in the pool.
